Standards vs. CurriculumCommon Core Standards forMathematicsCurriculum A set of standards that dictate A Common Core Standardswhat is taught in grades K –aligned curriculum (like MVP)12provides a structure for HOW Different than the previous setto teach the standardsof standards because they We chose the MVP curriculuminclude fewer topics that gothrough a thoughtful trialmore in depthprocess Suggest what to teach, notHOW to teach it State mandated

Common Core Standards forMathematical Practice1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.Make sense of problems and persevere in solvingthemReason abstractly and quantitativelyConstruct viable arguments and critique thereasoning of othersModel with mathematicsUse appropriate tools strategicallyAttend to precisionLook for and make use of structureLook for and express regularity in repeatedreasoning

An MVP Classroom looks like Group tasksDiscovering patternsDiscussionGeneralizingPresenting work and solutionsExplaining to peersSummarizingActive learningAsking questionsCollaborationWe want our students to be active, confident, creative problemsolvers!

It may be different than what you’reused to In the classroom, students are primarily working with theirpeers to explore and solve problems Our book serves as a map and guide. It does not usuallycontain definitions or examples as those are discussedand done in class The homework (Ready, Set, Go!) includes a diverse set ofproblems that are both related to the current content andare review of past topics The integrated nature of the curriculum makesconnections between and across sub-topics that span theartificial separations of algebra and geometry
