Many Crestview HighSchool Alumni educators sharetheir memories of the famedevent. Mrs. Kolb, our Front OfficeReceptionist, graduated in 1977.“We would skip school all weekto cut firewood for the huge bonfire on the Thursday before Homecoming. Each class had their ownfire to build and the class with thebiggest bonfire won,” said Kolb.Kolb goes on to say that everyone participated in making thefloats, and that many studentshad to take turns working on it.“We had so many more freedoms back then,” jokes Kolb.“This is probably the reason students don’t have as many today,”Assistant Principal Mr. Daygraduated in the class of 1978,only a year following Mrs. Kolb.He told us of a time in Crestviewwhen everyone at a stop lightwould know each other.“There wasn’t much to do inCrestview then, we used to sit inthe back parking lot of McDonald’s or Burger King to hang out.We rode around town listening toeight- track tapes,” said Day.Also a fan of the disco, Mr. Dayloves to dance. He notes thatthe dancing at Homecoming wasvery different than it is today. Dayplayed as a half- back againstChipley for Homecoming thatyear, scoring three touchdownsand thereby outscoring the opponent for the first time in four years.English teacher Mrs. Ruschmeier recalls her days of being a CHScheerleader.“The dance was the same nightas the game so we only hadabout 30 minutes to get ready. Itused to be held at the Shoal RiverCountry Club,” said Ruschmeier. The junior class of 1999 foundsome mischief to engage in. Theydecided to egg one of the Homecoming floats, but the attemptfailed, instead hitting the truck ofChemistry teacher Mr. Cheney.Mrs. Ruschmeier guarantees shewas not involved, being a seniorin the class of 98’.When asked about the eggingincident, Mr. Cheney reveals thathe doesn’t remember it.“It was a long time ago,” saidCheney,” The real injustice wasthat the freshmen float didn’t winthe contest. The theme was ‘Dogsin Black’ and the freshmen created bulldogs dressed in black suitswith space guns shooting aliens.”The theme was based on thepopular Men in Black movie released earlier the same year. The start of football season is infull swing and students and faculty are already preparing for thisyear’s Homecoming extravaganza. Our school’s theme is “BigLights, Big Cities,” including thefamous: Nashville, Honolulu, Hollywood, and Philadelphia. Each class will work on a floatto show off their class spirit in theparade on October 4 and laterthat night before the big game. We’ll be facing off against theLeon Lions of Tallahassee. Theweek of the game ‘Spirit Week’, students will be dressing up incostume each day to support theteam. The halls will be decorated andposters will be hung, pumping upthe excitement for a good win. Thesubmission box is located outside of the multi-purpose roomduring all three lunch periods.Students in the Journalismclass respond to the submittedsituations in this column.RelationshipsDear Unsure Feelings,The best way to tell if a guy likes you is to read his body language. If he is often in close proximity to you or finding an excuse to touch ortalk to you, he is most likely interested in you. If you are still unsure, justask him. The worst thing he could say is “No.”Sincerely, PennyDear Second Chance,Always remember to believe someone when they show you whothey are the first time. There’s a possibility the same situation could reoccur so it’s up to you to determine the worth of a small amount of happiness in turn for more hurt.Sincerely, PennyDear Possibly Unfaithful,First of all, it’s not wrong to have concerns. Everyone that has everbeen in a relationship has had them. If you decide to approach him, makesure the setting and time is right. Don’t make accusations about the situation. Just let him tell you his side of the story. Always remember to staycalm. The girl in question could be trying to mislead you.Sincerely, PennyDear Scared of Rejection,Show him that you are interested in him by flirting with him ortexting him after school, but not to the point where he thinks you aretalking to him just to talk. Just try to get your point across. Go out of yourway to talk to him or walk with him in the hallway. If you still feel theconnection then he may feel the same. Rejection is a natural aspect of thedatng world and everyone will experience it in their lifetime, so spin itinto a lesson you can learn from.Sincerely, PennySocialDear How to Handle Drama,Drama seems to be inevitable in high school, but that doesn’tmean you have to experience it. If you find yourself tangled in a situationthat results in drama, don’t encourage the continuation of it. Step backfrom what is causing it, wether it be a fight with a friend or boy/girlfriendissues, don’t continue to talk about it with others. Make sure not to postanything on social media sites that could add fuel to the flame. Lastly, tryto look at the situation from the other person’s perspective; you may findthat the issue wasn’t as monumental as you initially thought.Sincerely, PennySchoolDear Juggling School, Sports, and Extra Activities,A good way to keep up with school and extracurricular activitiesand still have a life is to have friends in your extra activities. Keep organized, schedule out the time you have for yourself, friends, and schoolwork. Make sure you’re balancing your time in a way that will benefit youthe most.Sincerely, PennyDear Good Study Habits,There are many effective ways to study for a test. Make sure youdon’t cram your studies the night before a test. Give yourself a sufficientamount of time to thoroughly understand the information. Tutoring canalso be helpful, especially if you are not proficient in a subject. Note cardsare useful as well. You could write the topic on one side and the description of it on the other, that way you could quiz yourself. Study accordingto how you learn, whether you’re auditory, visual, or hands-on.Sincerely, PennyTimmy Bryant/ Paw PrintsCrestview High School Vice Principal Dexter Day takes a preliminary look at anearly copy of Paw Prints, Crestview’s student-run newspaper.

10Senator redefinesfirst amendmentTo speak or be silenced?Mia King Paw Prints WriterThe first amendment allowsall citizens the right to freelyexercise the right to practice religion, to assemble peacefully, and petition the government withour grievances. Lastly, the firstamendment prohibits Congressfrom making any law abridgingthe previously mentioned rightsor the right of the press.Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, also responsible for trying to redefine our right to bear arms, hasexpressed he wants to redefinewho qualifies as a “real reporter” quoted from Durbin himself. Also, he emerges with “Durbanisim”(WashingtonExaminer),similar to McCarthyism, which isdefined as ‘making unfair judgements or using unfair investigative techniques especially in orderto restrict dissent or political criticism’ but Durbin has reformulatedit to disguise the lack of legality,by covering himself with claims of“disclosure” and “accountability”.The first place Durbin put thisinto effect was with a letter hesent to 300 groups that supportedthe American Legislative Coun-cil(ALEC). Oddly enough, ALECis a group of more conservativestate legislatures. Could Durbinbe trying to drain their funding byscaring off their donors?Durbin’s goal, in short, seemsto attempt to cut off anonymoussource journalism to stop peoplefrom expressing their problemswith government through speechor other various forms of media.Does this infringe upon our rightof free speech as citizens? Are the141 million twitter account holdersin the US classified as journalists,as they randomly express themselves in 140 characters or less? What about the 164 facebook users in the US, telling their friendsabout their youngest daughter’sdance recital, or where to go forthe best burger? The Illinois senator is trying touse his position as chairman ofthe Judiciary Subcommittee onConstitution, Civil Rights and Human rights to try to redefine thefirst amendment. Durbin may verywell be taking every one of ourrights to free speech away. SoI talked to some upperclassmen and got advice on surviving high school. It’s most important to not procrastinate and to make new friends. Your ‘best friend’ from last year won’tnecessarily be at your side this year, they’ll make new friends and you should too. Senior,Rebecca Morris says, “Always keep up with your grades and do your work.” Throughouthigh school the worst thing you can do is procrastinate. You’ve got seven classes to keepup with, and teachers hate it when you turn in assignments late. Having to constantly tryto catch up with work you’ve put off and work you’re getting will only be detrimental toyour grades. These tips have helped me through my first couple weeks of my freshmanyear, try them out yourself and see how they work for you.
