District Governor Wilma Murphy Winter is definitely upon us; I hope everyone is enjoying the snow and cold. I, personally, can’t wait for the spring thaw. I am very pleased to announce the Springfield Global Lions Club chartered on January 14, 2019. An announcement will be made when arrangements have been completed for their charter night celebration. We will be enjoying our winter conference in a few days. If you haven’t registered, there is still time – walk-ins are welcome. We have a full day of interesting sessions that you can chose. It begins with glucose screening Teamwork Power and ends with our Cabinet/District meeting. Now that we are halfway through our year, it is time to be seriously reviewing all the awards available to clubs and individuals to ensure you qualify. We have a variety of awards and Club Board of Directors should take the time to discuss acknowledging the hard work and dedication by Club members. Check out the requirements for the Secretary and Treasurer awards, as there have been changes. And don’t forget -- our District also has an Outstanding Club Award. All these forms are available on our website, valions.org under “Administrative Forms” as well as the state website, lionsofvirginia.org under “State and Int’l Forms & Publications”. Take the time to recognize achievements! The new LCI website is operational and the MyLion.org app for the desk top has launched. We will have a training session at the 24-L Winter Conference. LCI will also be providing online training and webinars. I encourage you to begin using the new app as soon as possible. Lastly, February is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This is a great time to make sure your Club is focusing support on one of our major service areas. Stay safe and warm. Yours in service, DG Wilma Wilma.Murphy@verizon.net (540) 361-4292 Outstanding Club Award * Club Excellence Award * 100% Secretary Award * 100% Treasurer Award * State Achievement Award * Visitation Award District 24-L Paw Prints — FEBRUARY 2019 2

Second Vice District Governor Glen Logan At long last the MyLion app for the web located at http://app.mylion.org.is now available. It now complements the MyLion mobile app which was released some time ago. Follow the steps below to create your account and go electronic! To create a MyLion account, you will need your LCI member number, your e-mail (if available) and mobile number. If you don’t know your member number, your club secretary can provide it to you. Once you’ve created your MyLion account, you may access both the web app or the mobile app with the same login credentials. At this time, the mobile app and web app have some operational differences with the mobile app presenting some Facebook-style functionality like newsfeeds and the ability to “follow” other Lions. If you have a smartphone, you can download the mobile app for free from Apple iTunes (for iPhones) and Google Play (for Android phones). The web app home page has tabs to direct you back to New Activity, Report Activity, My Activities and Metrics. As you can see from the screenshot on the following page, some of the information has been pre-loaded from reports from the legacy MyLCI website. From the New Activity page, a Lion can enter information about upcoming club activities – designated as a Service Activity, Fundraisers and Meeting. As I understand it, only the club secretary and president can Report Activity. Eventually, MyLion will replace MyLCI for monthly reporting purposes, but I’ve not heard any updates on when its use will be mandatory. The Metrics page has sub-tabs where you can display metrics at the club, district, multi-district, constitutional area, and overall LCI levels. This will be a great tool to enable members to track progress towards meeting service goals throughout the Lions Year. This is just a quick overview so be sure to attend the Saturday morning session on MyLion at the Winter Conference. I hope everyone is staying safe during the winter weather. Yours in service, 2VDG Glen glen.logan@comcast.net ((571) 426-5048 Continued next page District 24-L Paw Prints — FEBRUARY 2019 3

Create a Login You can access both the web app (on your PC or tablet) or the mobile app (on your phone) with the same login credentials! Select the area you want to look at or provide input to (New Activity, Report Activity, and My Activities) The Metrics page provides statistics on how LCI is doing down to the Club level! Membership Corner MAP: Membership Action I’m delighted to share with you information from IPDG Sally Kenavan on ways to increase membership! Lion Joe Dear Lions—We have just moved into our 3rd quarter for Lion Year 2018-19 and many Clubs have not recruited any new members! Do not despair—there is a MAP-Membership Action Plan that was published by former GMT-D Tom Kenavan, and he has granted me permission to give you some of his wisdom. A membership event was held that resulted in a 69% increase in Club Membership!! I was there, and the Club did an amazing job. They set the date and each member invited a friend, neighbor, husband or wife, church member, golfer, and/or college friend. Not a single member arrived without a guest. They room had beautiful blue table clothes on the tables, a small buffet line with beverages was available, and the entire room was set up with collages, tri-fold boards of service pictures, and a large professional tri-fold from Lions Clubs International about the Peace Posters winners. Lions were proudly walking their guest around pointing out the service projects and answering questions. A small table over on the side had their Lions Club Brochures and a stack of color LCI membership applications. The Clubs guests retrieved both brochures and applications and many signed-up at the event. A guest speaker talked about the roles of Lions from around the world and mentioned that “Where there’s a Need, There’s a Lion”. IT WORKS!! YOUR CLUB CAN BE JUST AS SUCCESSFUL—"YOU JUST HAVE TO GET OUT OF THE BOAT AND INTO THE WATER”. Invite more women and young professionals. Clubs have learned the value of women, as they now represent about 34% of our population in District 24-L. Women are excellent communicators and offer excellent beneficial leadership qualities to Clubs. Our new International President Gudrun Yngvadottir is the first woman to assume the helm for our 1.4 million Lions. The Women Leaders have started “New Voices” where each lion tells her story of service and dedication. You are invited to tell your story and be inspired. Do you have questions about Visitations? Visit valions.org and click on Administrative Forms and then 2018-2019 Visitation Requirements for a two-page instructional guide that will answer most of your questions. For a Participation Award, you must make 12 visits and all clubs in your Zone must be part of those 12. Keys to doing a successful visit include: Call the club you want to visit to verify location, time, whether there is a meal and acceptability of the date to visit. Clubs with 29 or less members need only one member to make a visit. Clubs with 30 or more members need two members to visit; visiting a club 50 or more miles away (your house to club visited) requires only one member to make a visit. Make the visit and share what your club is doing and learn from what their club is doing. Report the visit to your club Visitation Chair date of visit, name of club visited, purpose of visit, names of visitors. Your club Visitation Chair will report all club visits to 24-L not later than July 31, 2019. We’re here to answer your questions! District 24-L Lions Blue Ridge Service Area Sight and Hearing Mobile Screening Unit (SAHMSU) The District 24-L Sight and Hearing Mobile Screening Unit is available for use by all Lions Clubs in Blue Ridge Service Area of Virginia. The Blue Ridge Service Area is what was called District 24-C last year. SAHMSU is a truck and fifth wheel trailer unit. The trailer has two vision screening stations, two hearing booths with new state of the art audiometers. There is also a consultation area where technicians review the results of screenings with the client who was screened. A separate room at the front of the Unit with a second glaucoma screener that can be set up if the client load requires. This room is often used for KidSight screenings using the SPOT vision camera that is on SAHMSU. This room also allows a Sight and Hearing Technician to speak with a client who has either a sight or hearing issue so that they can be properly referred to their local Lions Club for possible assistance if they are unable to pay for a follow-up with an eye care professional or audiologist based on the results of their screenings. As a result, SAHMSU has been referred to as “The Magic Bus”, even though it is not a bus. But, because of the support from Lions of Blue Ridge Service Area in District 24L who volunteer as screeners, technicians, registrars and drivers, Lions do make the miracles happen – identifying those who have vision and/or hearing issues and helping them get follow-up care. Let’s take a look at the basic operating expenses for SAHMSU. SAHMSU is housed in a specially built garage in Weyers Cave. The building is climate controlled to protect the vision, hearing, and glaucoma equipment on the Unit as well as keeping the truck and trailer out of the weather. This allows the Unit to be “on the road” almost every week of the year, bringing free sight and hearing screenings to schools, day care centers, nursing homes, county fairs, wellness festivals, and even a community parade or two. It is a beautiful unit with large Lions logos to show that it is a Lions Sight and Hearing Screening Unit. Our wonderful volunteers Lions serve as drivers, technicians, and screeners make sure the Unit gets to screening events and is properly staffed at each event. And, there are always opportunities for Club Members to get certified to be Technicians and Drivers. A CDL is not required to be a driver but experience driving a 5th Wheel camper to trailer is very helpful. Like any vehicle, both the truck and trailer need to be inspected, tires need to in good condition and insurance policies for both the trained volunteer drivers and the truck and trailer are required. Diesel fuel needs to be purchased to run the truck. Propane needs to be puchased to run the generators when SAHMSU can’t be connected to electric power. The vision and hearing equipment needs to be calibrated annually to ensure that the results of screenings are accurate. Continued next page District 24-L Paw Prints — FEBRUARY 2019 15

District 24-L SAHMSU (Continued) Last Lions Year, the hearing equipment was upgraded to more reliable Maico audiometers. One new audiometer is installed at each hearing booth and a third is “portable” and can be used on the Sight and Hearing Unit or carried into a “quiet room” in a school or day care center. This year all the vision machines were replaced with Titmus V4 state of the art vision screeners offering additional testing capability and improved testing accuracy. Each client who is screened is given a copy of their screening with annotations as to whether they should see an eye care professional, hearing care professional or their doctor based on the results of their screenings. We do a daily count of number of clients seen, total vision screenings, total vision referrals, and total vision anomalies; total hearing, total hearing referrals, and total hearing anomalies; total SPOT screenings, total SPOT referrals; and total glaucoma tested, glaucoma referrals. These stats are provided to the Sight and Hearing Mobile Screening Unit Board of Directors and provide continuous validation of the 501(c)(3) status. The positive impact that SAHMSU has made to members of our community is very impressive. In calendar year 2018 forty-five (45) individual Sight and Hearing events were staffed by more than 350 Lions volunteers. Volunteer drivers drove SAHMSU more than 4000 miles to ensure that screening events could be conducted in communities across The Blue Ridge Service Area. As a result more than 4,500 people are recorded as receiving sight, hearing, glaucoma, and/or SPOT vision screenings. SAHMSU technicians referred more than 340 people for follow up hearing care, 300 for follow-up vision care, 20 for follow-up glaucoma care, and 20 young children for follow-up based on SPOT vision screenings. Together, the Lions of District 24C Sight and Hearing Mobile Screening Unit and the Lions Volunteers who staff the screening events made a staggering and positive impact in the lives of children, youth, and adults. It takes funding from all our Clubs as well as a lot of dedication on the part of individual Lions volunteers from our Clubs to keep SAHMSU on the road, serve as Technicians, Drivers, and Screeners and enable Lions Clubs in the Northern Shenandoah Valley to provide free sight and hearing screenings. Enclosed you will find a banner patch for your donation to SAHMSU during Lions Year 2017-2018. We hope you will continue tradition of support to SAHMSU in Lions Year 2018-2019. Club or personal donations can be mailed to the SAHMSU Treasurer Lion James Golladay, P.O. Box 159, Stephens City Virginia 22655. Because of your Lions Year 2018-2019 donations, your clubs, technicians, screeners, registrars, greeters, and drivers will continue to hear from those we screen endless “thank yous”! Woodbridge Lions Club Coat Drive On January 5, 2019, Woodbridge Lions Club President Chet and Lion Dee Pfeiffer visited the home of Mary Robles and presented her with a club Certificate of Appreciation for her donation of approximately 100 handmade hats for adults and children. Mary is the mother-in-law of Lion John Relph and made the hats for the club's coat drive (October to December 2019). The hats, along with many winter-wear items, were provided to the Prince William Area Free Clinic in Woodbridge, Virginia. The club was amazed by Mary’s contribution and her dedication to help those in need. Woodbridge wants to also thank all Lions and Lionesses from the Montclair, Lake Jackson and Manassas Host Lioness Lions Clubs for their partnership in donating a total of 445 pieces of winter wear to keep those less fortunate in our community warm during the winter. Lions Unite To Help End Blinding Retinal Diseases Since 2006, Lions across the country have supported the Foundation Fighting Blindness national VisionWalk program. The Foundation is the world’s largest non-governmental, non-profit organization spearheading research for cures and treatments to end sight-robbing diseases such as age-related macular degeneration. In Virginia, former District 24-A and 24-D have played a significant role in this national effort and even worked together in an annual friendly district-to-district walk challenge. This year, the No.Va VisionWalk will take place on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at Cameron Run Park in Alexandria. Our No.Va Chapter goal is to raise at least 137,000. The VA Beach walk is set for Sunday, April 7, 2019, with a goal of at least 76,000. VA Lions can support either of these walks through online or mail-in donations and can also have club teams done as a virtual or on-site team on walk day. I will once again be setting up the No.VA District 24-L Team and am happy to serve as the point of contacts for questions from Lions in former Districts B, C, E, & F. I can host a group conference call if that is a convenient way to share information on a club, zone or region level. I will be sending out an update soon about next steps for those interested. Please see the VisionWalk flyer on the following page of Paw Prints. Kelsey is our wonderful Event Director and is listed on that flyer, however we prefer that all questions from Lions be directed to me personally. For any mail-in donations, it will be best to send them to me at the address below, with checks made payable to the Foundation Fighting Blindness. I hope you will join us this year. Exercise, fundraising and fun — what more could a great Lion Day have to offer?! Save Sunday, March 10, it will be our No.VA walk luncheon kickoff, details TBA.
