Olympic Sports The Olympic sports comprise all thesports contested in the Summer andWinter Olympic Games. The Summer Olympics include 26 sportswith 36 disciplines and about 300events. The Winter Olympics include 7 sportswith 15 disciplines and about 80 events.

Winter Olympics The Winter Olympic Games were firstheld as a separate competition in 1924at Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France. From that time until 1992, they tookplace the same year as the SummerGames.

The Summer GamesThe Summer Games are held during thesummer season of the host country. Theylast for 16 days. Today, there are morethan 270 events during the games. Over15,000 athletes from 190 nations takepart.

The Paralympic GamesThe source of the term"Paralympic" is unclear. Probablyit derives from the Greekpreposition παρά, pará, para("beside" or "alongside") andthus refers to a competition heldin parallel with the OlympicGames.
