.28 TBrian PearceNoslerShooting a New7mm Magnum30www.riflemagazine.comhe Nosler Model 48 first appeared in 2005 as Nosler’sfirst entry into the sporting rifle market. During the1940s, John Nosler began experimenting with premium hunting bullets, which ultimately led to thedevelopment and production of theNosler Partition bullet in 1948 andexplains why this rifle is appropriately known as the Model 48. Byproducing its own rifle and hunting ammunition, Nosler was positioned to develop new cartridges.Examples include the .280 AckleyImproved and .26 Nosler. A new cartridge for 2015 is the .28 Nosler thatfeatures a beltless case, power, highvelocity and a flat trajectory.

The Model 48 has earned a reputation for quality andaccuracy. The flagship rifle is the NoslerCustom in afancy-grade checkered walnut stock, and it is guaranteed to give .5-inch or less groups at 100 yards withprescribed ammunition. Retail is 4,495. Although thereare many variants, including the Long Range, Expedition, Brush Country, etc., the Patriot, Outfitter andHeritage models are production rifles and retail between 1,795 and 1,895.All metal is coated with CERAKOTE, which helps reduce friction on working parts, is largely scratch resistant and helps prevent rust. Nosler bead blasts themetal before the CERAKOTE is applied, which is thenbaked on and results in a nonglare matte finish. The Nosler Model 48 action is a push-feed systemwith typical countersunk bolt face, plunger ejectorand rotating extractor that measures 1.300 inches inlength and is staked to the bolt body. It resembles theAR-15/M16 pattern extractor. The bolt features twinlocking lugs and results in a 90-degree lift. The boltbody is fluted to reduce friction and is generouslyvented to divert gases down into the magazine andaway from the shooter in the unlikely event of a ruptured case. The bolt sleeve cap likewise offers protection from gases. The firing pin is a one-piece designand is easily removed for cleaning without tools. Thebolt stop is constructed of a minimum of materials butis nonetheless strong. The bolt handle is gracefullyswept back, while the knob is knurled. The receiver is flattened on each side just below theround top, giving it a unique look, but also serves toreduce weight. The action is secured to the stock viatwo guard screws with Torx heads, and the floorplateis hinged. The trigger guard and floorplate are constructed of alloy, at least on the Patriot model usedherein.Model 48 variants are offered with two- and threeposition safeties, with the Patriotmodel having the twoposition type thatallows the bolt tobe opened whenit is in the ONposition. Trigger options include Timneyfor a three-position safety andRifle Basix for atwo-position safety(standard on the Patriot). Either is fully ad-Left to right: .28 Nosler, 7mm Remington Magnum, 7mmWeatherby Magnum, 7mm STW and 7mm Remington UltraMag.justable and offers a crisp let-off that is factory set ataround 3 pounds. The stock is constructed of a blend of Kevlar andother synthetic materials that provide lightweight construction and strength. It is a classic design with acheekpiece and is fitted with a black, one-inch Pachmayr Decelerator pad. The base color is gray with adash of green and is painted with a black specklingoverlay. The stock is fitted with aluminum pillars, butthe receiver and stock are also carefully bedded usingMarineTex. The barrel free floats in the forearm channel and is stainless steel, button rifled and handlapped. To evaluate the Model 48 Patriot, a Leupold VX-62-12x 42mm CDS-ZL scope (30mm main tube) was installed using Leupold QR bases and rings. It offers 6xoptical zoom with a twin bias erector system constructed of beryllium copper alloy leaf springs that arelightweight and shock-resistant. The 2-12x powercombination allows it to be at home when hunting inthe brush and timber or in open country. In additionto being illuminated, it features ¼-MOA finger click adjustments, fast-focus eyepiece and is argon/kryptongas-filled to provide waterproofing. It also featuresLeupold’s Xtended Twilight coatings to optimize lighttransmission that is coordinated specifically to matchthe human eye, and the ion-assisted coating offers atough, scratch-resistant finish.Open-country hunters will appreciate the LeupoldCustom Dial System (CDS) that compensates for bullet drop. From a sandbag rest, four, three-shot groups averaged.68 inch. Before discussing specific handload data, the folks at Nosler indicated its factory loads are wellbelow industry maximum averagepressure limits that are establishedMay-June 2015A variety of bullets and powders was used to develop .28 Nosler handload data.at 65,000 psi. With the right powder and bullet combinations, it ispossible to exceed factory loadperformance. To begin developing handloaddata, a sized case was checkedfor water capacity, which was101.6 grains when filled level withthe case mouth. With this muchcase volume, combined with .28caliber, powders with a burn ratethat fall roughly between AlliantReloder 22 through Hodgdon US869 will probably give the bestoverall performance. Although acomplete handloading feature article will eventually be publishedin Handloader magazine, for thepurposes of this article, four powders were selected: IMR-7828,Ramshot Magnum, Alliant Reloder25 and Hodgdon Retumbo.
