RISE OF THE EMPIRE1003-980 B.B.Y. (2653-2653 A.T.C.)The Battle of Ruusanand the Rule of Two1,000 B.B.Y.-0 B.B.Y.(2653 A.T.C. -3653 A.T.C.)1000 B.B.Y. (2653 A.T.C.)“DARKNESS SHARED”Bill SlavicsekStar Wars Gamer #1Six months prior to the Battle of Ruusan.Between chapters 20 and 21 of Darth Bane:Path of Destruction.996 B.B.Y. (2657 A.T.C.)“ALL FOR YOU”Adam GallardoTales #17Volume 5The sequence here is intentional. Though I amkeeping the given date, this story would seemto make more sense placed prior to the Battleof Ruusan and the fall of the Sith.

18PATH OF DESTRUCTIONDarth BaneDrew KarpyshynThe date of this novel has been shifted aroundsomewhat. The comic Jedi vs. Sith, off of whichit is based, has been dated 1032 B.B.Y and1000 B.B.Y. The latter is the more commonlyaccepted date for the story. However, theofficial timeline in the Del Rey novels places itat 1020 B.B.Y, and this seems the mostconsistent   with   the   novel’s   opening   disclaimerthat it takes place 1000 years prior to the fallof the Republic and the rise of Palpatine toEmperor. The   Essential   Reader’s   Companionand the Star Wars Books page on Facebooklocked down the dates at 1003-1000 B.B.Y.,and the following novels accordingly. This isprobably  the  “correct”  and final date, though Isuspect that regardless of the source, 1000years was originally meant to be a round figurerather than a precise one (or, perhaps moretruthfully, I find it unlikely that major eventsalways have to happen on the millennialmileposts).JEDI vs. SITHwith the Sith). This was an issue dealt with inthe Ruusan Reformations, marking thebeginning of the Rule of Two for the Sith, andthe reformation of the Republic and the JediOrder. This has also been borne out by the factthat in The Clone Wars, the members of thecurrent Galactic Republic still refer to theformer  era  as  “The  Old  Republic”  (an  error  thatin this case works in the favor of retcons, Ibelieve). The events of this graphic novel wereadapted and overwritten by Chapters 26Epilogue of Darth Bane: Path of Destructionand the opening chapters of Darth Bane: Ruleof Two.“BANE OF THE SITH”Kevin J. AndersonStar Wars Gamer #3The events of this story were adapted andoverwritten by Darth Bane: Rule of Two. Takesplace between chapters 7 and 8 of that novel.RULE OF TWODarth BaneDrew Karpyshyn#1-6Darko MacanOriginally, this novel was slated to be writtenby Elizabeth Hand (Boba Fett #3-6).In A New Hope, Obi-Wan says that the JediKnights were the guardians of peace andjustice in the Old Republic for over a thousandgenerations, and in Attack of the Clones theSupreme Chancellor says that the Republic hasstood for a thousand years. That means thatthe Jedi Knights have guarded the peace andjustice for approximately twenty-four thousandyears longer than the Republic actually existed. While most authors have stuck with theoriginal ancient dates (which would benecessary for any of the Tales of the Jedi andKnights of the Old Republic era stories to be inany way canonical), some (including MattStover) have indicated a preference for themillennium-old Republic (though he doesmention the Sith Wars). It is my opinion thatthe intention of the line was not to show howold the Republic itself was, but how long it hadbeen since the last major war (presumably

19that they have been re-canonized, so thiscould be placed during the Clone Wars as analternate version of those events. It could alsobe considered a legend based on the true factsof the Dark Jedi insurrection and the exploits ofYoda’s   youth   (which   could   make   a   certainamount of sense, given the fact that the CloneWars era records were fragmented after thePurge).“THE APPRENTICE”Mike DenningTales #17Volume 5Though the exact placement of this story isuncertain, the era is definitely between theRule of Two and the Revenge of the Sith. I’veput it here to space it a bit from the DarthBane novels, and to show that this is now thecommon practice for the Sith.DYNASTY OF EVILDarth BaneDrew Karpyshyn700 B.B.Y. (2953 A.T.C.)“HEART OF DARKNESS”Paul LeeTales #16Volume 4I   don’t   know   why  this   isn’t  a  Clone  Wars   tale,as the events off of which the story was basedwere originally meant to take place during thatperiod. Yoda (whose name was originally MinchYoda in old drafts of Episode V) had ashowdown on Dagobah, creating the dark sidecave. Supposedly the events had at one timebeen written out of continuity, but I believe165 B.B.Y. (3488 A.T.C.)FLASHBACK:Chewbacca and the Slavers of theShadowlands

For this timeline, however, Ihave attempted to create a harmony with theexisting material and the new chronology asrevealed by the new framework of thetelevision show, which is the brainchild of StarWars creator George Lucas. (It should benoted that Star Wars was originally The StarWars,   and   that   Lucas’s   source   of   inspirationwas primarily the Saturday matinee, FlashGordon-style serial. The Clone Wars, with itscampy humor, fun adventure, and overalldisposable continuity, makes it clear that Lucasis continuing the series in a manner muchcloser to his original intent.)It has long been a maxim of mine thatauthors should rely primarily upon their ownmaterial unless they have consulted with otherauthors, and that overreaching oneself in anattempt to create a more perfect continuity hasmore often than not created problems ratherthan solving them. The more combinations ofdates and events referred to, the moreprecisely a story must be placed, and the moredifficult it is to place it if these start to conflict.Due to the number of errors caused bymultiple offhand references combined withhighly specific dates (not to mention theoverall rewrite of the entire Clone Wars era

42due to the animated television series),precision in this case does not equal accuracy. In  the  words  of  Randy  Stradley,  “The  more  youdefine, the more   you   confine.”   Never   has   thisbeen made clearer than with the situationcurrently faced with The Clone Wars. The original Clone Wars novels and comicswere dated with a level of precision neverreached by other EU projects, and they allmade a point of referencing each otherfrequently (ostensibly with the goal of greatercohesion and continuity, though there were anumber of continuity errors caused in spiteof—and because of—this fact). Therefore, when the new television show came along, itmade a perfect continuity impossible. Somefactors must be either ignored or rescinded inpriority. My first inclination, while dealing with thefrustration of trying to reconcile thesedisharmonious views, was to ignore datestotally or events totally, with no in-between.Ignoring events made a nonsensical jumble ofthe era, however. After some thought, Idecided   to   go   with   a   “best   of   both   worlds”approach. I would do a kind of broad-sweepsharmony of the Clone Wars stories, rather thana   precise   reconciliation.   “Harmony,”   in   amusical sense, does not mean a perfectsynchronicity, but rather the convergence oftwo or more different elements. Since GeorgeLucas has said that Star Wars should be likepoetry   (i.e.,   it   “rhymes” dramatically), andsince the films are loosely reminiscent of theRing Cycle, I thought it a logical extension tothink in musical terms for the arrangement ofthe stories (those taking place betweenEpisodes II and III, in particular). Therefore,my approach to The Clone Wars has beenbasically a two-stanza tone poem. The firststanza features primarily the rise of AnakinSkywalker to the station of Jedi Knight. All ofhis adventures as a Padawan learner arechronicled in order of occurrence. This is themain theme. Several tangentially-relatedmelodies are then played off to the side, seemingly having nothing to do with the maintheme, but always relating back to it in somefashion. (These would be the stories that maynot mention Anakin or mention him onlyperipherally, but tie in with other structuredstories that do reference or feature him moredirectly.)For the most part, those novels and comicsthat stand alone (that is, feature secondarycharacters and/or do not in any way mentionAnakin   Skywalker’s   particular   phase   of   Jeditraining) have been left within the frameworkof Stanza Two, rather than in their positionsrelative to the Stanza One stories. In otherwords, they maintain their original placement, rather   than   being   “compressed” to fit the newtimeline. There are many reasons for this, butfirst and foremost is the fact that I havealready had to place far too many storiesspanning   three   years   into   a   gap   of   “fourweeks”   (which   is   a   date   that   simply   must   beignored, as well, if we want these stories to coexist in any logical, let alone canonical, fashion). While I know that this is fiction, I amalso well aware that I am already straining thebounds of credulity just to suggest that thesetwo  “takes”  on  continuity  can  co-exist at all (asimilar dilemma exists for the Rebellion-eramaterial, particularly those stories that takeplace between the episodes of the classictrilogy). Since many of them feature storiesthat hinge upon their late placement in thewar, rather than relating back to the maincharacters, it seemed appropriate to reflectthis in the timeline. As more episodes arereleased, the more I see that a relativisticapproach must be used in order to maintaincontinuity between the mediums.I think one of the only reasons that fanseven continue to have this conversation about"where things fit" is that Star Wars is one ofthe only licensed properties to have made aclaim  for  cohesive  continuity.  I  don’t  read  StarTrek novels, but even if one took into accountall the various time-traveling the charactersdo, I suspect that one would find the sameproblem there: too many tales to really fit, anddates   that   conflict   with   each   others’   events, conflicting backstories, etc. Even the author ofthe Sherlock Holmes stories made a couple ofdating errors, and that was someone whocreated the character and wrote the serieshimself. Case in point, at least one story wasdated during the three-year period duringwhich Holmes was presumed dead. Obviously, either the date or the story itself would have tobe considered apocryphal. Since most wouldlike to keep the integrity of the stories,Sherlockians simply assumed that it was thedate that was in error. That this is very much the case here. WhileI   don’t   think   that   Karen   Miller’s   four-weeksafter-Geonosis  date
