2011Merici-Chaminade Fund 2012Villa Angela-St. Joseph High SchoolBOARD OF ADVISORS2011-2012from the presidentMy bestWilliam Centa SJ ’70Don Dailey SJ ’70 – ChairKevin Flynt SJ ’70Brian FriedmanEarly last fall, one of our freshmen waxed enthusiasticabout all the good things unfolding before him in hisfirst year of high school. His exuberance got the better ofhim. “This is going to be my best freshman year ever!”he said.Well, I know the feeling. As my initial year as VASJ president comes to a close,I can honestly say that this was indeed my best freshmanyear ever. In my case, mind you, that’s really sayingsomething. My first freshman year was 1965-66, when Iwalked through the doors at East 185th and Lakeshore asa proud member of the class of 1969.Since my return, every day – every single day – thatI am here, I have the conscious thought of how blessedI am to work among our amazing students, faculty andstaff, and to serve our parents and the wider communityin the mission of VASJ.As a parent commented recently, the school just keepsgetting better and better. Consider: Once again this fall, we will be sending ourgraduating seniors off to some of the finest collegesand universities anywhere, including West Point. Allof our seniors – yes, all of them – are enrolling incollege this fall. Throughout the summer, we will be preparing for ourlargest freshman class in three years. It is particularlynoteworthy that our freshman enrollment numberscontinue to grow at the same time our admissionrequirements have become increasingly competitive. Support for the school is at an all-time record high. Both our Annual Fund and Endowment Fund aresteadily rising. Our second annual Classic Mixer wasthe most successful fundraising event in the historyof the school. Similarly, the perennial favorite LadiesNight Out maintained its commitment to “continuethe dream.”Dana HeilWes HowardMarlene KuskinRobert Mullin SJ ’88Sr. Susan Mary Rathbun VA ’58Sr. Joan Marie Russ VA ’65Gerard Stadler SJ ’69Reginald Stover SJ ’83James TobinMike Tobin ’91 – Co-ChairBarbara Tyler VA ’60Your support is the most important andvital source of funding for Villa AngelaSt. Joseph High School.supportSue Eline-WhiteADJUNCT BOARD MEMBERSUmberto Fedeli SJ ’78Senator George VoinovichThe Villa Angela-St. Joseph community is united and bonded to oneanother through Jesus Christ in a faith that is nurtured through communityexperiences and service to others. It is a theme that is woven into thefabric of who we are.The Ursuline charisms that defined Villa AngelaAcademy and the Marianist charisms that were thefoundation of St. Joseph High School are an integral partof everyday life at VASJ today. When the two venerableinstitutions merged 22 years ago, we pledged that theprinciples that guided us separately would guide ustogether. There were those who thought it couldn’t possiblywork. You might even say they thought we weredreaming. The truth is, we were. And we still are. And there is nodoubt we will continue to dream long into the future.Make no mistake: Just as our success has muted thecries of the fainthearted from more than two decadesago, so too must our perseverance and determinationlead us to greater glory in the years to come.On reflection, my freshman friend had it right. There’ssimply no time to rest on our laurels. There’s too muchto see on the road ahead for us to pause and look in therear-view mirror. Every year is a beginning. Every yearis freshman year.As I look forward to what lies ahead in 2012-13, I amenthusiastic. No, exuberant. Because you know what? This is going to be my best freshman year ever. Yourstoo.Richard J. All that actionput the Vikings at a deceiving record of 15-8 at thestart of tournament action. Tournament play saw theVikings defeat Dalton 66-49 before coming up againstRichmond Heights in the regional finals – one of thebest area games of the season. The Vikings took thegame to overtime, but came up just shy of a trip toCanton, losing 67-64.Coach Tony Redding ’89 took a young squad intotough competition this year. The White Division ofthe NCL is filled with powerhouse teams that gavethe Lady Vikings a lot to handle, in addition to theirindependent and out of town tournament schedule.Great freshman performances by Mariah McGee andToni Beuk supplemented the rest of the varsity squad, and promise a bright future for Lady Viking basketball.Michael Santarelli ’69, Peggy (Woyma) Santarelli ’69,Della (Woyma) Osborne ’68.Regis ’62 and Loretta Novitskey, Ken ’62 and Karen Lenardic, Jim ’63 andCary Kramar.Boys Basketball:Girls Basketball:For more information please contactMary A. A combination of strategic wagering and havingthe right answers enabled Sean Hansen to winby 1 in his opening night on Jeopardy.VASJ AlumnusSEAN HANSEN, vasj ’91Game showlearned hiswinnermost importantanswersat VASJBy Mike Tobin ’91Standing in front of cameras and a live audiencebefore the start of the popular game showJeopardy!, Sean Hansen was so nervous heneeded two hands to grip the buzzer used to answerquestions. So Hansen did what he has done so many times inlife. The 1991 graduate, whose senior year was the firstof the merged schools, hearkened back to the lessonshe learned at St. Joseph and Villa Angela-St. Joseph.“It was kind of like a football game,” says Hansen,39. “You’re nervous for the first few minutes but afterthat you get into the swing of the game and everythingfalls into place.”Things did fall into place for the Euclid native, butnot without some aggressive betting and correctlyanswering questions outside his the comfort zone.Hansen was trailing by 6,600 with less than a minuteleft when he hit the “Daily Double.” The topic wasJeopardy’s Alex Trebek and Sean Hansen ’91.“21st Century Tony Awards.”“I figured there was no point in not going for thewin,” says Hansen, who wasn’t too confident butdecided to bet 7,000. He nailed the answer, as well asthe answer in “Final Jeopardy,” and walked away with 30,001.The win was equal parts strategy, smarts and risktaking. Hansen used the same formula to excel in theclassroom and in athletics at St. Joe’s and VASJ, and tobuild a successful career. He grew up in Holy Cross Parish, the youngest ofthree boys born to parents who each had spent timestudying for the religious life before deciding God hadanother plan for them.Hansen was always big for his age, so much so thathe exceeded the weight limit in CYO football anddidn’t play organized football until his freshman year. But he excelled there, starting as the center on the 19898Spring/Summer 2012team that won the Division II state title. He also wrestledfor the first time in high school, going from winning justtwo matches his sophomore year to qualifying for thestate tournament his senior year.“Athletics taught me the value of setting goals andfighting through adversity to achieve some success,” hesays. “It taught me that you can take chances if you havea little faith in yourself and the people around you.”Hansen was equally successful academically, graduating second in his class. He still remembers greatclassroom debates over the issues of the day. He alsoreveled in the stew of different races, ethnicities andbackgrounds at the school.“That was a key life lesson, getting differentperspectives. There was such diversity of ideas,” he says.“People didn’t feel the need to censor themselves. That’swhat academia should be about, the free expression ofideas.”He also learne
