Class of 2018: JamesR. Dok, Gig Harbor Kennel Club.(There was a brief recess and Delegatescast their ballots)The Chair called on Alan Slay, Directorof Event Programs, who coordinated apresentation on "Attracting Exhibitorsand the Public to Your Event."Mr. Slay spoke as follows:Thank you, Dennis. As we said, we aregoing to give a presentation on how todraw exhibitors as well as the generalpublic to your shows. But before we startthat, I wanted to take this chance to giveyou a little update about a department, the Event Operations Department. I'mresponsible for that department. We areresponsible for processing the plans, theapplications that you provide, as well asthe judges panels and the results. We aredoing very well in the results processing. We are turning them around in a timelymanner, so that you know what yourprogress is and your exhibitors know theprogress toward their titles. We are notdoing as well as we want right now inturning around your applications as wellas your judges panels. I want you toknow that we are aware of that. We areworking very hard. We are working a lotof extra hours and weekends to try tocatch up with that. We are also putting insome new initiatives and looking at newways to make it easier for you to get youinformation and to get your communication back from us.We understand that show chairs arevolunteers and that you are trying tomeet deadlines with your premium listsand your advertising. We do appreciatethat and we are working very hard. Ourgoal is to make this as easy for you aspossible, provide you the informationthat you need to know so that we cancommunicate with each other, and weare monitoring this ongoing and we willcontinue to monitor it and we will comeback here in June and tell you how weare doing and it will be better. But Iwanted to pass that on before we startedour presentation. So today myself and these Delegates aregoing to talk about ways to attract

GZ delegates’ annual meetingexhibitors and the general public to yourevents, how to make your dog show anevent. One thing is, just like our dogscompete in the ring and out on thecourse, you have got to have thatmentality, that same competitor mentalitywhen you are trying to draw exhibitorsin. Today it is tougher than ever becauseexhibitors have more options. They canhave a hobby and through the use oftechnology they never have to leave theirhouse. The fellowship that they once gotby going out and participating in a dogshow or some other hobby, they can dothat online now. So we have to givethem a compelling reason to leave theirhouse, to get out and join our shows andour events. The exhibitors, because of that, aredemanding more value for their time andmoney. It has become more expensivethan ever to participate. Exhibitors arestaying closer to home because of thatexpense. But we do have some thingsthat are in our favor and one is, unlike alot of other hobbies, we have that bondbetween people and dogs and we alsoknow that people who are passionateabout something will go spend their timeand money and we need to takeadvantage of that when we are trying todraw people to participate in our Sport. The other thing about our Sport is wehave a Sport for everyone. We have sucha wide variety of sports all the way fromsomebody just starting out to the veryexperienced. We have sports that will lasta lifetime. We also are open to everyone. We always have been.So when you think about how you aregoing to draw exhibitors in, think abouttaking advantage of some of those issues, take advantage of some of the things thatwe have going for us to overcome thoseissues. One thing, talking to exhibitors, they tellus two of the main things that drivewhere they are going to exhibit is thelocal area as well as assembling the judgespanel. Time after time the exhibitorshave told us this. The thing is thatthrough technology exhibitors are moreknowledgeable than ever about judges. They are tracking the results that arehappening with the judges. They are alsosharing, through Social Media. They canshare the experience they have. The exhibitors tell us they want to winbut they also want the judge to treatthem like a customer. They are lookingfor a pleasurable experience. So theseexhibitors are tracking judges and theyare forming an opinion, so the showchairs and the clubs, you need to do thesame thing to know what is going todraw in those exhibitors. Some thingsthat they have told us and things we haveobserved is recent assignments in thearea. Exhibitors tell us if it is the samejudges over and over in an area and theydon't have a good experience, they arenot going to come back, and that's a verybig concern. Because, like I said, exhibitors are staying close to home. Soif you can't capture them going to yourlocal area, we may have lost them as anexhibitor. Also, some show chairs are puttingrestrictions in the judges' contractsbeyond what the AKC requires. Insteadof 30 days, some of them will go to a 90day restriction to try to make sure thejudge is fresh in the area. They likeshowing underneath a judge who is abreeder of the breed they are judging orof breeds of similar type and function. They feel very comfortable with judgeswith that.Look at supporting your permit judges. They are the future of our Sport. A goodway to use your local judges is use themas a permit judge. We know exhibitorshave told us that if they have a judge thatthey have a lot of knowledge about andthat they might not feel they will have agood experience versus a permit judge, they will choose the permit judge. Theywill take that chance. Also, the judge'shistory in drawing entries, all of thisinformation that exhibitors are gatheringis driving up the entries. Look and seewhat the judge has drawn recently. Ifthey are drawing a lot of exhibitors, thenthere is a good chance they will havegood entries at your show as well.Working with the specialties supportingthe event, go over the judges panel withthem, talk to them, ask them if there is ajudge they may recommend. If yourspecialty is not only supporting yourevent but also supporting your judge, youhave a good chance of drawing a goodentry. And targeted breeds, a little bitcontroversial, but there are some breedsthat no matter how hard you work it isnot going to move the needle much inyour exhibitors. There are some otherbreeds that can draw a good entry. IfAKC GAZETTE V APRIL2012your goal is to increase your entries youmay want to look at those targetedbreeds and work even harder whenassembling a judges panel for thosebreeds.Another thing the exhibitors like isadditional competition. Going back tothat value, if I'm going to spend themoney to go somewhere I'm going tocompete. The winner right now is theNational Owner Handled Series.Exhibitors love this. It is no cost to them. They get an extra chance to compete. They get to compete against their peers. We found, our data shows that when aclub offers this, that over 40 percent ofexhibitors are checking off the box thatthey are eligible on their entry form andare competing in this series. We have alsofound that this special attraction has agreater impact on your entries than anyother special attraction, more so thanyour best puppy, your best veteran, yourbest bred by.The National Owner Handled Series is afactor in exhibitors choosing where theyare going to exhibit. If you sign up forthis, we will send information to yourclub ahead of time to help youunderstand how to execute the series. Also, every judge assigned to your event,we will send them information abouthow to adjudicate in the ring. We are alsoworking with Marketing. You will seesome more information soon aboutsome compelling reasons to offer this.We are also in the early stages of workingwith our Communication and MarketingDivision about creating a video that isavailable online to help the stewards andthe judges adjudicate this in the ring tohelp them out. So you can look forwardto that.So this is a winner. So if that isn'tenough, we will promote your show andwe will promote this for you. If yourclub signs up for this, we will send out emails to potential exhibitors in the areanotifying them that the National OwnerHandled Series is available and will giveinformation about your show and yourclosing date. We send those e mails outfive weeks and two weeks prior to yourclosing date so they have two opportunities to get that information. So this hasbeen a winner and I hope you willconsider offering this. The other one is the four to six monthbeginner puppy. This is also very popular

GZ delegates’ annual meetingwith the exhibitors. This is a way tobring in new people. We found thatabout half the people who participatedin this are new to the Sport. We alsofound that over 68 percent of the dogsthat compete in this go on to compete inother AKC competition. This is how wecan get newpeople into our Sport. One way we dothat also is we promote this as well. Wewill send out e mails five weeks and twoweeks prior to potential exhibitors in thearea, prior to the closing date of theshow and notify them of the four to sixmonth beginner puppy and providethem some information about it.Specialties is another. I know a lot of youuse specialties associated with your eventsand we encourage you to continue to doso. Once again, it goes back to that value. The exhibitor likes the opportunity toearn multiple points at one time on oneweekend when they are out exhibiting. Then the companion competitions, Iknow some of the Delegates will talkabout the obedience and the rally andthe agility are very popular not only withexhibitors, but also with the generalpublic. Well, I will let some of our otherguest presenters provide someinformation about how they have takentheir dog shows and turned them intoexciting events for the exhibitors and thegeneral public. We will start with Ms.Carol Williamson.Ms. Williamson: Now in its 37th year, our cluster, the Reliant Park World Seriesof Dog Shows, was begun as a way tointroduce our sport to the general publicand it has worked! People in Houstonconsider our cluster to be their show. Many times we have witnessed someonewho has never been to our show stopand try to figure out where they are atthe show, and where they want to go.And somebody else who stops to talk tothem to them is another spectator whohas been to the show many years. Theyshare interesting things they have seenand where they are located. Our cluster is composed of, and all ofthese contribute to our success, the TexasWorking Dog Association of GreaterHouston; the Houston All Terrier Club;the Blue Bonnet Boxer Club; theCombined Specialties, the HoustonKennel Club; the Beaumont Club andthe Galveston Kennel Club. We are verylucky to have five Delegates, SherryWallis, Katherine Sullivan, Cathy De LaGarza, Carl Holder, and myself, activelyinvolved in putting on our cluster. Wenormally have approximately 20,000spectators at our event. We advertise our show in several ways.Pet Talk is a slick, printed, free, localmagazine with which we have anongoing partnership. They distribute tovarious locations around town and alwaysspotlight the show in their annualReliant Park issue with special articles, pictures and advertising geared towardour show. The magazine gives the publicsome information about how the show isjudged and what events will be held. There is also a two-sided card thatSherry Wallis developed which has thedate and our website address on one sideand a description with public orientedspecial events on the other. Ourmembers spread the cards around town. When people arrive at the show, they aregiven a copy of Pet Talk,a publicoriented guid
