His trips to "Music City"(Nashville) for the Country Convention, became a once a yearpilgrimage. Besides meetingwith new and old U.S. countryfriends, he became one of ourbest known country ambassadors and counted among hismany friends several of the topnames in the business including Johnny Cash and GeorgeHamilton IV.It was Gord Hill who, alongwith Ben Kerr, helped launchthe country career of BernieEarly, who's Columbia record"Chaser For The Blues" became nationally known. He is also set for aCBC-TV debut within the next fewweeks. A native of Winnipeg, hetook his schooling in Calgary. Heis the son of Dr. S.B. Thorson, aspecialist in internal medicine inCalgary. He didn't dig the medicalprofession and after a couple ofyears of college it was a toss upbetween social work and thebanjo. The banjo won out. He isone of the most gifted banjopluckers in the business, havinglived with a four string plectrumbanjo since the age of 12. Heexplains his reason for the plectrumover the tenor because "it's long necked for chord melody." Herefers to chord melody as "Youget the lead notes and a full chord. On the tenor banjo it's more single string notes." Thorson adds a newdimension to the banjo sound whichis often restricted to Dixieland,honky-tonk, or roaring twenties. He has had much success addingcontemporary rhythms. His Capitol recording shows hisversatility with the banjo onmaterial ranging trom "So What'sNew, "Dr. Zhivago Theme" and"Tiger Rag".Poor Souls PromotionPaying OffQuality's recent promotion of theBarry Keane production of "Look in' Round" by The Poor Souls, has been credited with pickingup several chart listings acrossQuality's Lee Farley a note pointing up the value of the label'sO'Neil was referring to was thetin cup and pencils package, appropriately engraved with "giveto the Poor Souls" which wassent to radio personalities acrossAmpex BowsMini -MerchandiserAmpex of Canada has introduced anew Mini -Merchandiser to displayand sell Ampex blank cassettetapes. 8 - - RPM 27/6/70Fruition of Canadian Country SceneThe Canadian country scene isfast taking on a much differentimage. It is, in fact, becomingCanadian. Much of the change isdue the efforts of songwriters, country radio personalites, recordcompanies and a fine fine qualityeffort by Canadian country artists. Some of the names that come tomind include George Taylor, TheMercey Brothers, Gary Buck, DickDamron, Bev Munro, Donn Petrack,Bob McAdorey, D'Arcy Scott, MikeGraham, Lynn Jones, Angus Walker,Jury Krytiuk, Don Turner, DonnaRamsay, Stompin' Tom Connors,Judy Lynn, Ben Kerr, Roy McCaull,Mickey Sheppard, Tommy Hunter,Ray Griff, Gene McLellan, RhythmPals and many many others including the late Gordon Hill, who passedaway June 12 of this year (seeobituary). Radio stations have alsodone much in pushing the Canadiancountry image, and without damageto their ratings. John Hart, of thegiant CFGM, has established an"open door" policy for new andestablished Canadian country recording acts. Yorkton's CJGX hasalso adopted a "push Canadian"policy and their Ron Waddell reportsexcellent acceptance by listeners. There are many more people acrossthe country, too numerous to mention here, who have put their backsbehind our new found country greats.RPM will be spotlighting thesepeople as the weeks go by and willmake an all-out effort to gathermore news on the domestic countryscene.A newcomer, Mike Graham, has exploded onto the scene with a Rodeosingle, produced by Gary Buck, en-titled "No Pity For A Fool". TheBy Walt Greal islight and restricted his joy -takingto just hearing other singers perform his material. He had severalof his copyrights published byplug side was also written by BuckSummerlea Music of Montreal, aflip "Sad Sad Fact" out of Graham'sown catalogue of original material.Graham's deck makes another moveup the RPM Country Fifty to No. 20and from reports received by radiostations, record stores and London'sOntario sales manager, Ken McFarland, it looks good for Graham tomake even greater advances.Graham has been a fairly quiet country boy. Born in October of 1942, hetook an interest in music at the agefive with piano instruction fromsoon -to -be -released Rodeo album.(Beechwood Music-BMI) with theTorontonianBerlin. Mikedidn't get the country calling inthe beginning. He started out alittle confused like most of today'syoungsters and trod the rock androll path, as a feature singer withThe Rockatones. He became a bigname with the rock and rollers of1959 and kept it up until 1961 whenhe moved to Montreal. Still scratching with the rockers, he joined agroup known as The Roadrunnersand ran throughout Canada and theU.S. sharing billings with some ofthe big names of the day like JoeyDee and The Starliters, The Ronettes, and many more.Graham suddenly saw the light ofcountry, in 1965. He dropped allhis associations with the "hipsters" and moved into the gloriousfeeling of insecurity with the Canadian country crowd. At this timedomestic country successes couldbe counted on one hand. Anyway, after hours, day, weeks, and threeyears of pickin' and writin' andcatalogin' an impressive volumeof his own material. He was, bynow, somewhat of a hermit. Hepreferred to stay out of the lime-Columbia's Mercey Brothers adding a little colour to theCBC-TV "Countrytime''show out of Halifax. They've justentered the charts with "Pickin' Up The Pieces''.few of which he'll revive on hisThe next move for Graham wasback to Ontario and a somewhatsettling in Southwestern Ontario. He got the itch to perform againand became a fairly big name throughout the area with a reward later ofhis own weekly television show onCFPL-TV London. No slouch whenit comes to finding solid employment when the circuit runs a littledry, Graham moved into the publishing business in a big way. He impressed Andrew Twa, president ofBerandol Music, with his admini-strative abilities, and was appointed vice president of this powerfulpubbery.Graham had been kicking aroundthe recording idea for severalyears but hadn't really wanted tobecome involved until he felt hewas ready. He checked out a fewof the new and old record bustin'types and clicked with the oldmaster himself, George Taylor, oneof the pioneers of the Canadiancountry disc business. Much ofGraham's push was through hisassociation with some of the solidand sincere people in the business.Another famous booster of theCanadian scene, Whitey Hains ofBMI (Canada), was also instrumental in furthering Graham's recordcareer. Next for this young countrytalent was a tie-in with record producer Gary Buck. The rest is shap-ing up to be an exciting and avery nice feeling for all those whohave helped Mike Graham becomeone of the new and very greatCanadian country talents.Imperial recording artist Jackie De Shannon recently playeda packed engagement in Montreal. She is seen here with DaveDoucette (I) Liberty Group Mgr and London's Pierre Bel lemare.

10 -- RPM 27/6/70Live Acts On"Luncheon Date"Everyday isTuesdayThe recent successful "live"performance of Jacqui and Lindsay(Morgan) on the CBC-TV "Luncheon Date" has apparently causedmajor changes and extra buckspending for the publically ownedCorporation. With youthful producer Nigel Napier -Andrews, everconscious and fearful of the generation gap, at the helm, ElwoodGlover has, not only developeda "Pop popper" image but, control of one of the most highlyrated network shows, seen atthat time. It is hoped a bettertime scheduling is in order forthis easy going noon -hour showfor the housewives and shut-ins.It is expected however, thatGlover and his one cameramanwill be joined by another, maybetwo cameramen, a larger audienceand, of course, another locationand perhaps a trio of musicians. What makes the foregoing almostfact is the increasing of Glover'sshow to 90 minutes, Sept. 7th.,which makes almost impossible, the present set-up.Andrews has been experimentingwith musical performance excitement, as reported above. He'sapparently been successful intalking the Corporation into increasing the budget of the showby paying for this added attraction. Jacqui and Lindsay havebeen signed for a return date(July 17) and the following between now and then: (19) folk singer Karen Jones; (26) folk singer Dee Higgins; (29) Irishfolksinger Owen McBride; (Jul 6)Columbia recording artist FrancoisJourdain.Reason for the signing of onlysingles and doubles is the limitedspace available in the lobby ofthe Four Seasons Hotel, wherethe show is presently shot. Evenwith two, the cameraman worksWelcome.miracles zeroing in on his movingtargets. Those who are of the opinion theyhave suitable talent and can accompany themselves on otherthan a grand piano, are requestedto contact Andrews at the CBC(Toronto) for a possible audition. It is hoped, Andrews won't beplagued by the old guard CBCperformers who just don't communicate anymore - if
