Theodore Rousseau Records, 1928-1974 (bulk 1960-1973)Biographical noteTheodore Rousseau (1912-1973) served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and in theArt Looting Investigation Unit of the Office of Strategic Services before being appointedAssociate Curator of Paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1947. He wasnamed Curator in 1948 and Chairman of the Department of European Paintings in 1967,and was elected Vice Director of the Museum and appointed its Curator-in-Chief in 1968.Educated at Eton, the Sorbonne, and Harvard University, Rousseau traveled in Europebefore World War II to research medieval French art, and served at the National Galleryof Art in Washington, D.C. from 1940 to 1941 as assistant curator of paintings. After hiswartime naval service, his duties with the Art Looting Investigation Unit of the Officeof Strategic Services included arresting and questioning Germans suspected of art theftsfrom occupied nations. His findings were used in the recovery of works of art and asevidence in the Nuremberg trials.Under Rousseau’s curatorship the Department of European Paintings made notableacquisitions including Georges de la Tour's Fortune Teller in 1960, Rembrandt's Aristotlecontemplating the bust of Homer in 1961, and Monet's Terrace at Sainte Addressein 1967, as well as Velazquez’s Juan de Pareja, which was purchased at auction in1970 for five and a half million dollars. During his tenure the Museum undertook acontroversial deaccessioning of paintings and other objects in its collections that waswidely publicized and discussed. Rousseau participated in meetings of the InternationalCouncil on Museums beginning in 1948, and chaired ICOM’s Committee on ScientificLaboratories in Museums and Sub-Committee on the Conservation of Paintings. He wasnamed a Chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur and admitted to the U.S. Legion of Meritin 1946; in 1962 he received the Order of Orange-Nassau from the Netherlands and theOrder of Alfonso X el Sabio from Spain.He died on December 31, 1973, one day before his retirement, when his election as thefirst Museum curator to become a Museum Trustee would have gone into effect.Scope and Contents noteThe Theodore Rousseau records contain predominantly documents created during histenure at The Metropolitan Museum of Art as both departmental curator and in his role asMuseum Vice Director.
