4ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATIONENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENTCARBON ACCOUNTING & LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA)Environmental considerations are a critical factor in the production ofJJI-Joists. Our certified ISO 14001:2004 Environmental ManagementSystem has enabled the company to target key areas to reduce theimpacts of our activities on the environment. Our third key sustainability element is our PAS 2050:2011 carbonaccounting model which is assured by Ecometrica, the UK leadingGreenhouse Gas specialists, on an annual basis. Not only does thisenable us to measure, compare and reduce our key “trigger” impactsat each stage of the production process but our overall carbonnegative footprint can be applied to individual house design andsupply contract volumes. The introduction of biomass heating systems utilising woodco-products, the continuous commitment to waste minimisation, energy savings and the recycling of materials used, ensures thedelivery of JJI-Joists with the smallest environmental footprintpossible. This in-built consideration of the environment in our currentand future plans has shaped our purchasing policy to choose onlythose technologies that can prevent pollution and improve ourenvironmental performance year on year. The competencies of all our employees enables our environmentalobjectives to be implemented and exceeded every year. A safe, quality driven and improvement culture ensures environmentalperformance is always present at the very centre of all our activities. As environmental considerations affect the whole JJI-Joist supplychain, we are engaged in continuous dialogue with our suppliers anddistributors to minimise potential impact. Our commitment to ISO 14001:2004 from start-up, not onlyguarantees our compliance with all current and forthcominglegislation but delivers a JJI-Joist with excellent and continuallyimproving environmental credentials.SUSTAINABLE TIMBER SOURCING & CHAIN OFCUSTODYThe UK Government policy on timber purchasing has stated thattimber should only be purchased from legal and sustainable sources.Increasingly, both public and private sectors are encouraged tofollow this policy.Sustainable timber supply has always been integral to themanufacture of our engineered wood products. ConsequentlyJJI-Joists are able to be specified as FSC Certified. All productclaims are independently verified by BM TRADA Certification on anon-going basis.Within the James Jones Group and via our trade body Confor, wework closely with both FSC & PEFC to ensure any future requirementsare complied with. James Jones Harvesting Division and our TimberSystems Division Chain of Custody systems enable all clients to havefull traceability to source to guarantee supply chain legality andsustainability. Consequently our JJI-Joists are both EUTR compliantand are derived from known and trusted sources. Our LCA measurements enable our environmental performanceprofile to be measured and improved upon by assessing allenvironmental impacts associated with the sourcing, transport andmanufacture of our product i.e. from the forest to the end user.JJI-Joists can help to mitigate climate change as timber acts as acarbon sink. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed by trees and used tocreate wood. This CO2 is only released back into the environmentwhen the joists come to the end of their lifetime. As only sustainabletimber is used for the production of JJI-Joists, other trees are plantedto replace harvested ones immediately, closing the CO2 cycle andcontributing to keep a constant or even increasing volume of CO2locked away from the atmosphere where it cannot contribute toclimate change. Increasingly supply chain partnerships are beingdeveloped with key clients to enable our quantified carbon negativesupply to support and contribute to downstream Corporate SocialResponsibility (CSR) commitmentsImproved supply logistics, new resin formulations and improvedbiomass heating efficiencies are recent examples of targeted andquantifiable improvements within the life-cycle performance of ourJJI-JoistsOur carbon accounting complements the generic schemesused to quantify environmental impacts of products such as BREenvironmental profiles. Scores for this scheme are used in theassessment process of 'The Code for Sustainable Homes' in Englandand Wales and 'Ecohomes' in Scotland. Timber I-joists such asJJI-Joists achieve the best scores in this scheme (A ) and thereforecan help specifiers to achieve their “Zero Carbon” construction goals.THERMAL PERFORMANCEOther advantages of using JJI-Joists are their superiorstrength-to -weight ratio and readily available deep sections (up to450mm) when compared with solid timber. In this way more insulationcan be used within the building envelope and significant savings inheating can be achieved. The thin web used in JJI-Joists contributes to minimise repeatedthermal bridging in timber frame structures enabling JJI-Joists toachieve better U-values than solid timber. This property makesJJI-Joists ideal as a structural member in roofs and walls in low energybuildings.BMT-PEFC-0105The UK government has already expressed its preference for betterinsulated and airtight building envelopes as a way to reduce energyconsumption. The adoption of insulated structures using JJI-Joistsand designed according to principles such as Passivhaus cansignificantly reduce the energy requirements for heating and thisapproach will be essential to achieve a truly Zero Carbon House.

JJI-JOISTSINTRODUCTIONJJI-JOIST RANGE AND TOLERANCESA JJI-Joist is a composite engineered timber joist, combining 45mmdeep high-grade finger jointed softwood flanges (C24) with a 9mmthick oriented strand board (OSB/3) web. Four flange widths areavailable at 47, 63, 72 and 97mm wide.JJI-Joists are available in a comprehensive range of sizes, designedspecifically for the UK market. JJI-Joists are available in lengths ofup to 12m.COMPOSITIONJJI-JOIST FLANGE SIZESA B CD45mmSoftwood flanges9mm OSB/3 WebHigh tensile and compressivestrength is used to carry thebending loads which aregreatest at the top andbottom of the sectionHigh shear strength is usedto carry the shear loads whichare greatest at the mid depthof the section45mm47mmThese materials have different specific properties and by combiningthe two materials in this way to form a composite section you canuse the strengths of each one where it is needed most. This, resultsin the new section outperforming the individual materials thatit is made from (the sum is greater than its parts) making it morestructurally efficient.Using advanced technology these components are combined toproduce an innovative alternative to conventional constructiontimber with many additional advantages.ADVANTAGESJJI-Joists are designed to give a superior strength to weight ratioenabling the manufacture of longer and lighter structural members. The JJI-Joist, with a softwood flange: Is capable of spanning longer distances Is easier to handle Is easier to fix and nail Is less prone to splitting Is quicker to install Is extremely stable Reduces building maintenance Provides a less complex design solution Is simple to specify using superior software Has Part E compliant details available Is FSC/PEFC accredited Has very low embodied energy Has independently assured carbon accounting toPAS2050:2011Joist Depth(mm)63mm72mm97mmJJI-Joist Flange SizesA 47mm145 195 B 63mmC72mmD97mm TimberGradeC24C24220 C24235 C24245 C24300 C24350 C24400 C24450 C24Table 1.
