President’s LeafbyMel Bandanza, President, Almaden Valley Rotary ClubI am writing this on “Super Sunday” waiting for da Bears to come on tosee if they can repeat their 1985 super bowl victory. As you may or maynot know, I was born and raised in Chicago and spent many a Sunday inWrigley Field watching the “monsters of the midway” as they were calledin those days, dominate the NFL. Sid Luckman, Joe and Bill Osmanski,Hugh Galineau, Lee Artoe, and “Bulldog Turner” to name a few, were sogood, in one championship game they beat the Washington Redskins 73-0.One Sunday evening after a game, my parents took me to the Ivanhoerestaurant on Clark Street near Wrigley Field. I was about 7 years old. Wehappened to be sitting at a table next to Bill Osmanski who was havingdinner with his wife. I recognized him and was all excited telling my Dadwho he was. He heard me and asked my Dad if I could join him at histable. After talking for a bit he walked with me to another table wheremany of the Bears were having their dinner, told them to take special careof me since I was a big fan. After talking about the team for a while theyhad all the Bears there sign a menu for me. As you can imagine it was athrilling evening for a youngster and though I have been a 49er fan sincecoming to California, there will always be a part of me that will cheer forthe Bears.Yours in RotaryMel
