Happy New YearWelcome to the 2015 winter edition of our ‘Into The Blue’ magazine. On behalf ofeveryone here at both Bolsover Cruise Club and The Cruise Holiday Shop, I would liketo wish you all the very best for the New Year, and what a year it promises to be!At long last we will see the arrival of the eagerly awaited new shipbuilt especially for the British market, P&O Cruises’ Britannia. Shewill be officially named in just a few weeks time and embarks onher maiden sailing from Southampton on 14 March. Also, notforgetting Anthem of the Seas from Royal Caribbean Internationalarriving in Europe this April, she promises to exceed expectationswith some incredible innovations. These are just two of the bignews stories for 2015.Our feature on eco-friendly cruising acknowledges some of theecological responsibilities of an ever-growing cruise industry. As ships become larger and an increasing number of them taketo the seas each year, the industry faces greater environmentalobligations than ever before. Constantly evolving ecologicalprocesses have been adopted by cruise lines and it is great to havean opportunity to share just some of the steps being taken by thecruise industry towards ‘going green’.Looking back to 2014, we were honoured to continue our workwith some of the UK’s most deserving charities. In August, five ofour team took on the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’, with donations of over 200 going to Macmillan Cancer Support. September 2014 sawus gifting two P&O Cruises sailings; the first donated to BluebellWood Children’s Hospice and the second to the Weston ParkHospital Cancer Charity. Both charities auctioned their cruise, raising a combined total of 2,250. In October four members ofstaff completed the 5k Asics Neon Run in Leeds, raising over 500for local charity Reuben’s Retreat, while November saw us hold ourannual Fun Day raising 1,000 for Children in Need. This edition’s destination feature is Australia, a country thatcontinues to be on everyone’s bucket list. Cruise holidays as weknow them today began back in the early 20th century as linercruises to and from Australia. Cruising has changed enormouslysince those days, but we can still offer lots of opportunities to visitthis fascinating destination. Call us now and before long you couldbe stepping ashore down under! In this edition, continuing on the theme of experience within oursales team, the regular ‘under the spotlight’ feature includes a Q&Awith several of our Sales Consultants who previously worked onboard cruise ships. Emily, one of our cruise consultants, was anentertainment officer on Aurora when I celebrated my birthdayon board. She organised seating for my party in the theatre to seeBobby Davro and then asked me for a job! Today she is a mostproficient Sales Consultant and, like the others who have previouslyworked at sea, brings that extra dimension to her work.2Into The Blue Call us on: 01246 819 819I do hope you enjoy reading this latest edition of our magazine andlook forward to being of service to you.Yours sincerelyMichael WilsonManaging Director

There’s NothingLike AustraliaThe vast and varied land of Australia is a melting-pot of culture, history and diversity. Vibrant cities and serene beaches sit side by side, fringedby lush green rainforest and immense mountain ranges. Australia combinesa whole continent within a single country, making it one of the most diverseholiday destinations in the world.DIVERSITYAustralia is the sixth largest country inthe world, home to hundreds of nationalparks, 31,000 miles of coastline and 14World Heritage listed wonders. A cruiseholiday to Australia opens up this land ofcontrasts for exploration; distant shoresacross the country are suddenly withinreach and an abundance of experiencesare there for the taking. Australiaeffortlessly blends cosmopolitan cityliving with laidback coastal retreats andwilderness adventures: there’s nowherein the world quite like it.HISTORYAustralia is home to the world’s oldestliving culture; the Aboriginal people. The Aborigines have an ancient historyspanning over 50,000 years and theyremain at the core of Australia’s natural10Into The Blue Call us on: 01246 819 819heritage; from the ancient rock artfound at World Heritage site Kakadu, tothe sounds of the didgeridoo and theDreamtime experience of the DaintreeRainforest. Eco-FriendlyCruising Towardsa Greener FutureOver 20 million passengers travel on board cruise ships every year and, while such rapid and substantial growth is fantastic news for the industry,it brings with it a vastly increased responsibility to the environment.16Into The Blue Call us on: 01246 819 819

“State-of-the-art filtration and waste-management systems are nowcommonplace and programmes are overseen by a dedicated on boardEnvironmental Officer. All crew attend regular environmental training andthere are enormous penalties inflicted on cruise lines seen to be floutingtheir environmental responsibilities.”The popularity of cruising continues to soar and in recentyears the cruise industry has increased at almost doublethe rate of tourism overall. Ships are becoming even bigger;P&O Cruises’ Britannia is the largest ship ever built for theBritish market and 2016 will see Royal Caribbean Internationalwelcome an as yet unnamed 227,700 ton, 1,188ft long ship totheir fleet – the largest cruise ship in the world. Over 20 millionpassengers travel on board cruise ships every year and, whilesuch rapid and substantial growth is fantastic news for theindustry, it brings with it a vastly increased responsibility to theenvironment.Cruise lines have a vested interest in protecting theenvironment; clean beaches and oceans are essential to thecruise experience and it is crucial that the seas, vistas andislands to which they owe their livelihood are protected. Withthis in mind, we looked a little deeper at the strides cruise linesare taking towards creating an eco-friendly future.GREEN TECHNOLOGIESWith more and more ships taking to the seas, it has becomeimperative for cruise lines to contribute to a sustainable andeco-friendly future. Where recycling and waste-processingprocedures were once considered cutting edge, today they areconsidered a basic requirement. The ‘zero solid waste discharge’ policy is now commonplace, withcruise lines including P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, CarnivalCruise Lines, Holland America Line and Norwegian Cruise Line, either incinerating their waste on board or bringing it ashore fordisposal on land rather than discharging it into the ocean, as isstill permitted by law. Waste is often compacted before leavingthe ship to further minimize bulk in on shore landfills.Water treatment facilities and oily water separators are nowutilised by all major cruise lines and have come to be expectedrather than preferred. Royal Caribbean International, CelebrityCruises and Azamara Cruises recently spent 100 millionconverting their entire fleet to comply with their ‘Save TheWaves’ programme; an environmental agenda that demandsgoing above and beyond environmental compliance regulations,as well as an absolute focus on recycling, pollution preventionand the reduction of waste. Intrinsic to the ‘Save The Waves’programme are state-of-the-art water purification facilities totreat wastewater on board.Cold ironing, or Alternative Maritime Power (AMP), is a systemthat has so far experienced successful but limited use, withPrincess Cruises and Holland America Line included in just ahandful of cruise lines to adopt the technology. Cold ironingallows docked ships to use a city’s electrical system during itstime in port, conserving the ship’s fuel and reducing emissionsinto the city. This relatively new technology is currently limitedto ports in Juneau, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Seattle; Seattle’sgrid is powered by hydro-electric power and it is estimated thatcold ironing in the city saves around 8 tons of fuel every day.PRESERVATION PROJECTSEnvironmental consideration on board cruise ships doesn’t stopat waste-management and recycling. More and more cruiselines are working with government and scientific organisations, facilitating long term scientific study of the ocean andencouraging participation in conservation projects around theworld.Royal Caribbean International’s ‘Explorer of the Seas’ has an onboard atmospheric and oceanographic laboratory which carriesout ocean and climate research on behalf of the University ofMiami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science(RSMAS). Similarly, Carnival Cruises has installed scientificdevices on four of its ships: Triumph, Legend, Miracle and Spirit.Developed in alliance with the International SeaKeepers Society, each device monitors ocean quality and gathers detailed climateinformation.Holland America Line has long been recognised forachievements in marine environment protection and their‘Avoiding Whale Strikes’ programme is being shared across thecruise community.Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Internationalencourage environmental consideration from a young age;each run dedicated children’s activities focusing on pollutionprevention and looking after the environment.MOVING FORWARDThe environmental obligations of the cruise industry havegarnered much interest and discussion in recent years and thepractices employed both on board and on shore have changedsignificantly as a result of substantial investment and innovation.State-of-the-art filtration and waste-management systemsare now commonplace and programmes are overseen by adedicated on board Environmental Officer. All crew attendregular environmental training and there are enormouspenalties inflicted on cruise lines seen to be flouting theirenvironmental responsibilities.Carbon offset programmes, gas scrubbing and slow steamingbetween ports (18 knots maximum speed is optimum for fuelefficiency) are just some of the developments planned for thenear future, in a long list of steps the cruise industry is takingtowards going green.www.bolsovercruiseclub.com Into The Blue17
