FROM MY OWNEXPERIENCEThe Education I always wanted to have.I am an engineering student from Turkey. I alwayswanted to work in the field of ICT, but my universityeducation was in a different subject. I taught myselfhow to program and started doing freelanceprojects for small companies. However, after someyears of work I felt the need to improve myselffurther, in order to work on more satisfying projects.UIT EIGENERVARINGWhen I found out about the Fontys ICT program, and learned about conditions and options offeredby Fontys, I immediately applied to be enrolled inICT studies.Being a foreigner and having no idea about howthe system works, I thought all the applicationprocess and getting the permits would be difficult.I was very surprised that the whole process wasvery easy for me and I get great help and guidancefrom the ICT department. In Fontys, there is always somebody to help you.Adapting to a different style of teaching thatemphasizes practical work, and encouragesstudents to undertake research, would be verydifficult if I didn’t get all the help from our teachers. One of the highlights of my experience was being astudent assistant on my second year. When I was helping new students withtheir practical work, I realized howmuch I had learned in just one year andhow great the curriculum is for anyonewith no previous experience in IT.I thought all theapplication processand getting thepermits would bedifficultIt’s a lot of work but I couldn’t possibly get to thepoint where I am now in just two years withoutFontys ICT program. Signing up for it was one ofthe best decisions I have ever made.Efe Mumoglu2

Study in the NetherlandsAbout The NetherlandsThe Netherlands is about 41,000 square kilometres in area, and has a population ofaround 16 million. With a rich cultural heritage, the country boasts many of history‘smost famous names in the fields of art, literature, philosophy and science. It also hasa long history of international trade, forging links with countries across the worldfrom as early as 1600, bringing together new knowledge, skills, business and ideas. The warm welcome we give to the rest of the world has earned us a well-deservedreputation for openness in business, as well as cultural and social life.Holland, or The Netherlands? The country’s formal name is ‘Nederland’ (TheNetherlands), meaning the ‘low country’ or the ‘lowlands’. ‘Low’ because much ofthe land is at or below sea level. Holland is in fact the name of the western part ofthe country which is the most heavily populated of all the provinces, encompassingAmsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. However, Holland is also commonly (andmistakenly) used to refer to The Netherlands as a whole, including all 12 provincesthat make up the country. The south of The Netherlands borders on Belgium and Germany, with the rest ofEurope within easy reach by car or the country’s excellent public transport system. Our multinational population presents a rich mix of different cultures, eachcharacterised by the tolerance for which the Dutch are famous. When you study inthe south of the country, you will quickly learn that we have so much more to offerthan windmills, tulips, cheese and clogs. Of course you should take time to explorethose aspects too!How to find Fontys University ICT College? This university college is located in Eindhoven. FROM MY OWNEXPERIENCECulture shock!I am an International Student from Ghana studyingat Fontys University of Applied Sciences Eindhoven. My name is Eugenia Boeh-Ocansey and I amstudying specifically, Electrical and ElectronicEngineering.UIT EIGENERVARINGComing to the Netherlandsfor me was purelyexploratory and was a personal challenge toassimilate a different culture, language and systemof education. Of course it was not easy in thebeginning. Luckily, though stereotypically the Dutchare deemed rather hoity-toity and less amiable thanothers, passers-by were rather accommodating anddid not hesitate to help me with directions, buyingstuff from the market and even buying bus tickets. But of course, what makes the culture shock lessdepressing is the fact that in the InternationalCommunity at Fontys we are introduced to studentsfrom all sorts of cultures who go through the exactsame “shock”. This of course is what gives us ourbond and we often share experiences and lessons.Education at Fontys is one of a kind. It is definitelynot what I am used to. When it comes to the Fontyseducation, repetitive structures and heavilycondensed theory is definitely not our style. We aremore interested in hands on practice whichaccelerates our development in the real world ofwork. We are proud that we can realize what wedesign. For example in my first year, I already built a12 volt power supply, an automated garden lightsystem and simulated an elevator. Fontys thrives onteam work and helps us to imbibe the spirit ofcooperation.Fontys Engineering motivates me to be independentand to be ambitious, especially because I am aCareer Woman in the making!!Eugenia Boeh-Ocansey6This of course iswhat gives us our bondand we often shareexperiences and lessons

Bachelor - Master TrackIn the Netherlands we use the so-called two-cycle system of universityeducation that is being introduced across the European Higher Education Area. This two-cycle System consists of two clearly defined cycles: undergraduate(bachelors) and graduate (masters and doctorate). A bachelor’s degree isearned after completion of a course of undergraduate study.A master’s degree is earned after completing graduate studies, usually twoyears after first earning an undergraduate degree. In the Dutch universitysystem bachelor degrees in Information Technology can be obtained throughtwo different tracks: A research university bachelor’s programme requires 3 years of study (180credits). Graduates obtain a bachelor of science (BSc) degree. A bachelor’s degree programme offered by universities of applied sciencesrequires 4 years of study (240 credits). Graduates obtain a Bachelor ofInformation & Communication Technology (B ICT).Differences between the two tracks are: Study pace in the research university programme is higher, the curriculum ismore theoretical and related to research. The bachelor’s degree programme offered by universities of appliedsciences are practically oriented (including internships in companies) andare related to applied science. For students who choose to do bachelor and master programmes at researchlevel, we have set up a close relation with Eindhoven University of Technology(TU/e).
