DistractedWhat’s wrong with nine-year-old Jesse? He can’tsit still, he curses, he raps, and you can’t gethim into—or out of—pajamas. His teacher thinksit’s Attention Deficit Disorder. Dad says, “He’sjust a boy!” And Mama’s on a quest for answers. Is Jesse dysfunctional, or just different? Don’t weall have ADD, to some degree? She consults apsychologist, a homeopath, a neuropsychologist, and an environmental physician. She talks toneighbors, whose kids have their own diagnoses.A psychiatrist prescribes Ritalin for Jesse, butsurely a pill can’t solve all his problems. Ahilarious, provocative, and poignant look at amodern family and an epidemic dilemma: Are weso tuned into our 24/7 info-rich world that we’vetuned out what really matters?

DOUBT: A PARABLE“What do you do when you’re not sure?” Soasks Father Flynn, the progressive and belovedpriest at the St. Nicholas Church School in theBronx, in his sermon. It’s 1964, and things arechanging, to the chagrin of rigid principal SisterAloysius. However, when an unconscionableaccusation is leveled against the Father, SisterAloysius realizes that the only way to getjustice is to create it herself. And as for thetruth of the matter? As Father Flynn says,"Doubt can be a bond as powerful andsustaining as certainty.” In stunning prose, JohnPatrick Shanley delves into the murky shadowsof moral certainty, his characters alwaysbalancing on the thin line between truth andconsequences.

THE AGITATORSTHE AGITATORS tells of the enduring buttempestuous friendship of Susan B. Anthony andFrederick Douglass. Great allies? Yes. And attimes, great adversaries. Young abolitionistswhen they met in Rochester in the 1840s, theywere full of hopes, dreams, and a commonpurpose. As they grew to become the culturalicons we know today, their movements collided, and their friendship was severely tested. Thisis the story of that forty-five-year friendship– from its beginning in Rochester, through acivil war, and to the highest halls ofgovernment. They agitated the nation, theyagitated each other, and, in doing so, theyhelped shape the Constitution and the course ofAmerican history.
