Bydefinition, “heritage” means tohave a tradition, legacy, thatwhich is acquired from a predecessor. As children and youth fromthe coal region, we had ancestors who left us a legacy. Theywere a people who workedin the coal mines, factories, shops, textiles, education andmany other occupations. Theyworked hard and played hard. They did what they needed todo to provide for themselvesand their families. When calledto duty, they went off to war toprotect their land and families.Sadly, some never returned tothe region they cherished andloved. As Shamokin Area Alumni, we also have a legacy thatwas passed down to us fromthat first group of 35 graduatesthat met on the night of May 7,1884. They created the tradition that we as alumni celebratetoday by meeting once a yearfor a reunion. Little did theyknow they were providing atradition that would grow intoan annual event with a membership of over 20,700 alumni. They were the true pioneersthat gave us a reason to meeteach year, to welcome newclasses and reward excellence. There are two lasting memories that I acquired growing upas a student of Shamokin AreaHigh School. First, I began myeducation in the 60s when therewas Shamokin High School andCoal Township High School. As I counted the different locations for homerooms and classes, I realized that my educationwas provided in nine differentbuildings spread across the city.As a result, I was no longerspending time with the sameMessage FromOn behalf of the administration, faculty, staff andschool board members ofShamokin Area School District, I would like to welcome all alumni to the annual meeting of the ShamokinArea High School AlumniAssociation. This year, like those ofthe past, our students continue to represent ShamokinArea in all facets of education. Academically, our curriculum continues to evolveand challenge students withnew and up-to-date courses. We brought the schoolnewspaper, “The Signal,”back with huge success. Itcan be viewed from our district website. Our AdvancedPlacement students andstaff are coming off theirbest year in school history. This success has led to a25% increase in AP studentenrollment. Our studentsalso continue to participatethekids from my neighborhood. There were other kids fromacross town that I never met orknew were there, whichspawned new friendships andlasting relationships.Moreimportantly I learned how wewere different, which provided the preparation for me to gobeyond the secure home townwalls. The second memorywas the teachers that spent theirtime and shared of their wisdomand knowledge to provide thequality education that we have(continued on page 13)Principaldual enrollment courses atBloomsburg University, Luzerne County CommunityCollege, and LackawannaCollege.Musically, our programscontinue to be one of thebest! Many of our musicstudents continue to compete and qualify for district, regional, and state musicfestivals. Competition bandhad a successful first season competing in TOB openclass. Four students qualified each for PMEA District8 Orchestra and DistrictChorus; one student fromeach is moving on to RegionIV-V Orchestra and RegionIV Chorus.Six studentsqualified for PMEA District8 Band. For the first time inover 10 years, a student hasqualified for the PMEA District 8 Jazz Chorus. We alsohave new course offerings inmusic recording technologyand beginning guitar. In the area of athletics, both our team and individual athletes continue to workhard to excel in their sport. In the fall we had a crosscountry state qualifier; football and girls soccer bothqualified for PIAA Districts. Our winter sports have beenexciting as we returned afive-time state champion inswimming. The competitivespirit team won their secondstraight District 4 Championships and both boys andgirls basketball have qualified for districts. Wrestling won its historic 700thdual meet. Spring sports areready to begin, coming offa tremendously successful2019 season for all sports.I would like to take thisopportunity to thank theShamokin Area High SchoolAlumni Association for yoursupport. I recognize the hardwork and effort put forth bythe association each year,(continued on page 13)
