Director's LetterDear Friend of Saint Jude,In this beautiful medieval hymn, attributed toSaint Bernard of Clairvaux, the word "crown"is written as "corona" in the original Latin:O sacred Head surroundedBy crown of piercing thorn!O bleeding Head, so wounded,Reviled and put to scorn! The pow'r of death comes o'er You,The glow of life decays,Yet angel hosts adore YouAnd tremble as they gaze.Because the virus causing the current pandemichas a series of crown-like spikes on its surface, itwas given the same Latin name, “Corona.” Thisconnection is providential, because Jesus showsus how to transform our own “crown of thorns,”our sufferings, into a crown of glory. The May crowning of Mary is a wonderfulsign of this hope that, as sons and daughters ofour heavenly Father, we too will receive a royalcoronation. Yet before Mary was crowned Queenof Heaven and Earth, she, like her divine Son, feltthe thorns of sorrow. As Saint Bernard exclaimed, "O Blessed Mother,a sword has truly pierced your soul! . So deeplyhas the violence of pain pierced your soul, thatwe may rightly call you more than a martyr, for,in you, participation in the passion of the Son byfar surpasses in intensity the physical sufferingsof martyrdom."SAINT JUDE MESSENGER VOLUME VII, ISSUE IJesus gave us His mother from the cross to showus the way to transform the crown of thorns weare given in life into a crown of glory by offeringup our sufferings to Him as she did. "In danger,in distress, in uncertainty," Saint Bernard says,"think of Mary, call upon Mary. She never leavesyour lips, she never departs from your heart; andso that you may obtain the help of her prayers, never forget the example of her life. If you followher, you cannot falter; if you pray to her, you cannotdespair; if you think of her, you cannot err. If shesustains you, you will not stumble; if she protectsyou, you have nothing to fear; if she guides you,you will never flag; if she is favorable to you, youwill attain your goal.”In other words, the saint of Clairvaux points outthe surest way of reaching our goal: "per Mariamad Iesum", through Mary we are led to Jesus. Inthis issue of the Saint Jude Messenger, you willread about ordinary Catholics who called uponthe saints, crowned in glory, to help them throughdifficult times. May we too never fear a crown ofthorns placed upon us but see in it a weight ofeternal glory.Father Gabriel Gillen, O.P.Director, Rosary Shrine of Saint Jude3

Thank you, Saint Jude!LET TER S FROM PATRONS OF THE ROSARY SHRINE OF SAINT JUDEFor generations, Catholics have publicly thankedSaint Jude for favors received through his intercession. In these pages, patrons of the Rosary Shrine of SaintJude carry on the tradition!SAINT JUDE AND COVID-19My son was on life support for nine days withCovid and wasn’t given much hope, but prayersto Saint Jude brought him back. I will never forgetthe miracle bestowed on our family.-Richardthat evening, Saint Jude popped into my mind: I feltthat I must appeal to the patron saint of hopelesscases, the saint of the (seemingly) impossible.I searched online to learn the proper prayers, and discovered the Rosary Shrine of Saint Jude. Iprayed each of your prayers, followed by a Rosaryfor my friend's father. The next day, we received thewonderful news: his lung scans showed improvement! He was responding to the treatments. He is nowmoving out of the ICU after two and a half months.-VirginiaMy daughter, who has asthma, got Covid. Shewas very sick for two weeks. I prayed to Saint Jude, and she is better now. I’m so grateful to Saint Judeand the other saints that I prayed to!-GuiomarMy father caught Covid in December. Since heis diabetic, his condition got worse in a matter ofdays, and both his lungs appeared white on chestx-rays. I religiously prayed a Novena to Saint Jude, and my father was discharged on Christmas day.The doctor said that my father is his success story, given his age and condition. Thank you, Saint Jude;thank you, Mama Mary; and thank you Jesus.-KathleenSaint Jude saved my son. He was on life supportfor nine days with Covid. The doctor said he didn’thave much hope. I prayed my heart out. My sonpulled through and the doctor said it was a miracle.-SofiaA dear friend's father was in the ICU on aventilator being treated for Covid. If a final attemptat an experimental treatment didn't help, the familywould face difficult end-of-life decisions. My friendasked me to pray for her dad, who, at that point, really needed a miracle. The time arrived to see if a lung scan showedany improvement from the last possible treatment.Though a person of prayer, I had never prayed toSaint Jude. Out of the blue, as I prepared for prayerLast April, the hospital called to let me knowmy mother was very sick with Covid (she hadbeen transferred to the hospital from an assistedcare residence three days prior) and would need24-hour care upon being released. She would besent to a nursing home.I did not want my mother sent to a nursinghome, where, due to the pandemic, I would notbe allowed to visit or advocate for her. She wasincapable of advocating for herself.SAINT JUDE MESSENGER VOLUME VII, ISSUE I4

I was extremely upset at the news and prayed sohard to Saint Jude that night, asking that the Lordtake my mother home, if it was His will, ratherthan let her go to a nursing home.Early the next morning the phone rang andthe doctor told me my mother had taken a turnfor the worse. They would allow me to come to thehospital to see her, but once I left the hospital I couldnot go back. I immediately went to the hospital, was able to say goodbye, and a priest gave her lastrites. My mother passed away the next day, EasterSunday.I am so grateful to Saint Jude that my prayerswere answered.-AnonymousA PILOT’S PR AYERThank you, Saint Jude, for answering my prayersand interceding with God for me. The Lord allowedme to pass an “impossible” test and for me to be putback on flying status. What I thought was hopelessand impossible for me by myself was granted meby God through your intercession. Saint Jude, youcontinue to prove your special favor with the Lord.Along with your previous miracles, such as bringingmom back from her heart attack and coma, youalso answer my small requests and never fail to actas my special patron and heavenly helper. I willcontinue to teach my boys about your incrediblepower and will encourage devotion to you for therest of my life.-TomSAINT JUDE MESSENGER VOLUME VII, ISSUE ICHOOSING LIFE WITH OUR LADYAND SAINT JUDEI was three months pregnant when I found outI was infected with a deadly illness. The doctorswanted me to abort the baby because there wasa 50 percent chance she would be born with thedisease, but I prayed to Our Lady and Saint Jude.I was not going to abort and make a decision thatonly God rightfully could. No one understoodwhy I kept the pregnancy, but I had great faith. She was born healthy and her name is “Angelica”after the Holy Angels. She is now 32.-JoannSAINT JUDE’S MEDALLIONAlmost nineteen years ago, my older sister’shusband punched me straight in the heart. I haddifficulty breathing from that day on. I have been praying in thanksgivingever since.-KarenA LIFETIME OF DEVOTIONMy husband passed away on May 24, 2020into the arms of the Lord. James and I had beenpraying to Saint Jude for 62 years. It started inAugust of 1958 when we both asked for a favorto be granted, not knowing that we were prayingfor the same favor: permission to be married inSAINT JUDE MESSENGER VOLUME VII, ISSUE IMy father prayed to Saint Jude on a daily basis, asking for his intervention regarding his death.Specifically, he requested that God allow himto die in his home, in his bed, with my motherpresent, and without pain. On the afternoon thathe passed, he walked up to my mother and saidthat she should call for an ambulance because hewas about to die. He then went into his bedroom, got into bed, and–absent pain–he died. Clearly, his prayers for intervention were heard by SaintJude and answered by our Lord.-JohnShare your Saint Jude story by usingthe reply envelope attachedto this issue, emailingrssj@dominicanfriars.org,or contacting us on Facebook atfacebook.com/rosarysaintjude.6

I can’t do both.” I was veryfrank with the Lord. A MYSTERIOUSGOOD SAMARITANBy Desi MartinezDuring the Coronavirus lockdown, oneperson with whom I had the chance togrow closer was my mother. She relatedto me the story of how our family found ourpatron saint. My mother is now 72. She was the youngestof nine children, and her father was older thanher mother. This is a story about her father, mygrandfather. It happened before my mother wasborn when my grandfather was a young man inthe very early part of the 20th century. He was a police officer in Mexico at that time. One day he was on patrol, going from one town toanother on horseback, as was still the practice inTHE AUTHOR’S GRANDFATHER AND MOTHERSAINT JUDE MESSENGER VOLUME VII, ISSUE I“In a daze, he could onlyrecall that someone hadpicked him up, carriedhim home, and left himon his bed.”those days. Apparently, he had made enemies ofa group of men. While traveling between towns,he was attacked by three of these men and beatenseverely. They left him for dead on the side of theroad with no one around. In a daze, he could only recall that someone hadpicked him up, carried him home, and left himon his bed. He could also remember this persontending his wounds, and a feeling that everythingwas going to be fine.No one in the house saw this person carrymy grandfather home and no one knew howmy grandfather got there. However, as this goodSamaritan was leaving, my grandfather caught aglimpse of the man’s face. It was Saint Jude. Herecognized it from seeing Saint Jude’s image inchurch and on religious artifacts. My grandfather recovered fully from his woundsand lived a long life, marrying and having ninechildren and numerous grandchildren. Saint Judehas been the patron saint of our family ever since.10

THE 15 PROMISES OF THE ROSARYThe Holy Father, Pope Francis, urges us that“today, in this time of pandemic, it is necessary tohold the Rosary in our hands, praying for us, forour loved ones and for all people.” Patrons of theRosary Shrine of Saint Jude are doing just that! Many readers of the Saint Jude Messenger haveshared with us that devoutly praying the Rosary hasbrought them graces, healing, and the fulfillmentof long desired prayer intentions. The benefits of what Pope Saint John PaulII called “an exquisitely contemplative prayer” wereenumerated in a special way by a 15th centuryDominican friar. Alanus de Rupe received thefollowing 15 promises to those who pray the Rosarydevoutly from the Blessed Virgin Mary herselfthrough a private revelation.
