The YMCA of Greater Cleveland strengthens community throughYOUTHDEVELOPMENTPROGRAMSY AchieversY Achievers is a career development college preparationprogram for youth ages 12-17 to who attend school in a lowincome neighborhood. The goal of Y Achievers is to providerole models and mentors whose success and knowledgewill inspire youth. Y Achievers also seeks to expose youthto diverse career options and raise academic standardsand improve college readiness. Students also benefit fromactivities that give them a positive sense of self whilebuilding character and increasing their individual assets. YAchievers also creates channels for continuing communityinvolvement by involving business and industry.Total Y Achievers students served in 2014: 97Youth in GovernmentThe purpose of the Ohio YMCA Youth in GovernmentProgram is to develop within youth a dedication to corevalues and leadership in the democratic process and tostrengthen young people and communities by emphasizingcharacter development and values of caring, honesty,respect, responsibility, and faith in all that we do.In 2014, YIG operated at three Sites and had51 participants.Teen CaféThe Café program runs for three hours two days a week inthe Brooklyn and Parma areas and offers students tutoring,homework help, and fun “electives” like a Youth Sports class,Zumba, Aerobics or Yoga. Participants can also take coursesthat lead to certification as a lifeguard, or in areas suchas babysitting, or first-aid and C.P.R. University HospitalsParma Medical Center and the Cuyahoga County PublicLibrary, along with the schools, collaborate with the YMCAeach week to keep it interesting for the teens. In 2014,100students participated in the Teen Cafe program, whichis funded by a grant through Starting Point.Y Summer Day Camp andChild Care ProgramThese programs build exciting, safe communities foryoung people to explore, build self-esteem, grow up andmake lasting friendships and memories and cultivatingsafe, nurturing environments for children to learn, growand develop social skills. In 2014, 2,104 children wereenrolled in either child care, summer camp, or both.AquaticsTeaching the skills needed to stay safe in the water.In 2014:13, 200 Participated in Swim Lessons250 Day Camp Swim Lessons75 children in Adaptive Aquatics Lessons650 Swim Team Participants55 Lifeguard Academy ParticipantsYouth Sports LeaguesPromoting fun activities that build athletic, social andinterpersonal skills.We Run This CityYouth Marathon ProgramEncourages healthy habits and exercise by teaching youngpeople to set and achieve goals and increase their selfconfidence as well as fitness and endurance. In 2014, 671students were recruited from 28 schools to train andsubsequently participate in the Rite Aid ClevelandMarathon. 486 students crossed the finish line.International StudentExchange ProgramThe Vermilion Family YMCA hosted a student from Madrid,Spain during the summer of 2014. Jesus Fernandez Funciaworked with the Vermilion Family YMCA’s Summer SportsCamp during the entire period. He received a 100 stipendduring each week of his exchange. This was Jesus’ secondtime visiting our YMCA in this exchange program through theYMCA of Europe.

The YMCA of Greater Cleveland strengthens community throughHEALTHY LIVINGPROGRAMSYMCA DiabetesPrevention ProgramThe YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is the most evidencebased diabetes prevention program in the world with highsuccess rates in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2diabetes — 58% for adults of all ages and 71% for thoseindividuals over age 60. In 2014, 422 people beganthe year-long program. In comparison, in 2013,82 people began.The YMCA of Greater Cleveland has successfully collaboratedwith HealthSpan to enter into a three-year statewide contractfor the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program to be a coveredbenefit for Ohio HealthSpan-insured patients. In addition wehave created a comprehensive supporting state-wide referralsystem. In the coming years, this contract will create thousandsof patient referrals to all of the involved Ohio YMCAs, resultingin significant impact on the health of residents across the state.LIVESTRONG at the YMCA LIVESTRONG at the YMCA was launched in 2014 atthe YMCA of Greater Cleveland. It is a twelve-week, smallgroup program designed for adult cancer survivors. Thisprogram fulfills the important need of supporting theincreasing number of cancer survivors who find themselvesin the transitional period between completing their cancertreatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionallystrong enough to attempt to return to their normal life ortheir “new normal.” The program is conducted outside ofmedical facilities to emphasize that LIVESTRONG at theYMCA is about health, not disease.AquaticsIn 2014, over 13,200 individuals participated inswim lessons .Group Exerciseand Personal TrainingThe Y’s certified personal trainers and group exerciseinstructors provide members with over 500 class optionsper week across our Association — and empower people tomaintain or improve physical activity, health and wellness.Clevelanders in MotionThis program works with grassroots and institutional partnersto advance opportunities for increased access to healthy andaffordable foods and safe and attractive roads and sidewalkson which to walk, run or bicycle. In 2014, the Clevelanders inMotion program received a REACH Grant for nearly 2 million from the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention to include the:Increased Access to Environments with Healthy Food I ncrease distribution of Cleveland-Cuyahoga CountyFood Policy Coalition’s Healthy Food Guide within AfricanAmerican neighborhoods in Cleveland I ncrease distribution of Cleveland-Cuyahoga County FoodPolicy Coalition’s Spanish version of their Healthy FoodGuide within Hispanic/Latino neighborhoods in Cleveland I nstall 150 “Garden Soxx” backyard gardens in threeneighborhoods, in partnership with community partners O ffer two, six-week heathy cooking classes in two eastside African American neighborhoods.Increased Access to Physical Activity Opportunities I ncrease the number of miles of new bike facilities inCleveland to at least 70 by 2017 I ncrease the number of schools with access to the We RunThis City youth marathon program I ncrease the number of community parks and recreationcenters offering community-led physical activity offerings.Increased Access to Opportunities for Clinical/Community Chronic Disease Prevention Programs O ffer Body Age Screening program at four FederallyQualified Health Centers in City of Cleveland O ffice Y-USA Diabetes Prevention Program at fourFederally Qualified Health Centers in city of Cleveland.

The YMCA of Greater Cleveland strengthens community tFamily-to-FamilyCollaborativeAssists families and individuals inguiding them to services that areavailable in their community. In 2014: 750 families serviced through aone-time service 222 families received eitherPrevention or Wrap Around Services 24 Kinship Families received services 149 Division of Children and FamilyService cases received 223 Foster Care Visitations were held(bio family meeting with the child whois in custody) 195 Team Decision Meetings held inconjunction with DCFS 8 Foster Families Recruited Roughly 400 youth serviced thru ourShoes and Clothes for Kids program(new clothes and payless shoe gift cards) 10,000 dollars spent on families forvarious services (recreation, tutoring,housing/utility assistance, etc) Over 400 bags of school supplieshanded out at our Annual Back-toSchool Rally Collab also hosts a monthly FosterParent/Kinship Family SupportGroup in conjunction with theCleveland Heights and EastCleveland Collaborative.TogetherhoodProgramTogetherhood is the YMCA’s SignatureProgram for Social Responsibility. Thisprogram invites Y members to lead andparticipate in volunteer service projectsthat benefit the communities wherethey live. 25 volunteers donated theirtime to community service projectsin the Lakewood area in 2014.Y-HavenThe program assists homeless men ages18 and older to become self-sufficientand achieve permanent housing. Menreceive transitional housing, treatmentfor substance abuse and mental illness,educational training, and vocationalassistance. In 2014, Y-Haven Served323 individuals. Of these 42% wereCaucasian, 57% African Americanand 5% were of Hispanic decent.The Annual Steps and Stagesevent raised 27,000 in supportof Y-Haven programs. 1,019,724in Federal, 92,561 in State and 268,870 in County grant fundingcombined was received in 2014.Open Door( A Y-Haven program)A collaborative effort that offersformerly incarcerated individualscomprehensive case management,transitional housing and the necessarywrap-around services in a safe housingunit. The Open Door program served69 individuals. Of these 29 receivedpermanent employment and 34 hadsuccessful home placements.Green Team( A Y-Haven program)A custodial program offered throughY-Haven designed to offer trainingand job opportunities to men andwomen who have multiple barriers toemployment (ex-offenders, history ofsubstance abuse and/or mental healthissues and limited education).In 2014, the Green Team Programserved a total of 37 participants.Of those, over 34 graduated and22 secured employment. 19 ofthese graduates were employedby the YMCA. Currently the YMCAemployees 30 graduates of theGreen Team.French CreekYMCA Partnershipwith CommunityCollaboratives inLorain Co.Funded by the United Way of GreaterLorain County, this collaboration helpsworking families in poverty advancetheir education, income, health andbasic needs. The partners in all of thecollaboratives represent many othersocial service organizations, localbusinesses and government agencies. N orth Ridgeville Heart and SoleChallenge focuses on improvingthe health of North Ridgeville byincreasing access to physical activityand nutritious foods. K EY (Keystone Empowers You) coversthe Keystone School District thatincludes the cities of LaGrange,Carlisle and Penfield Townships. Itfocuses on making the healthy choicethe easy choice. S outhern Lorain County HealthLiving Collaborative covers thecommunities of Wellington, Pittsfield,Huntington, Rochester, Kipton andCamden. It focuses on making thecommunity healthier through variouswellness programs and initiatives. South Lorain Educational Collaborativecovers the neighborhood in SouthLorain the is predominantly Hispanic.It focuses on providing opportunitiesfor middle schoolers to increase theiraccess to better educational andphysical health programming that willdevelop the whole student.
