Walmart 2012 Summer Giving Fact Sheet 20 Million in Grants to Help Kids Have a Smarter, Healthier SummerOverview:Summer break is a critical time that can leave thousands of children hungry for nutritious meals, learning activities andeconomic opportunities that will enable their continued health and academic achievement. Walmart and the WalmartFoundation are providing more than 20 million to six nonprofit partners to help children have smarter, healthier summers. Theeffort is expected to impact more than180,000 kids in more than 350 communities across the country.The facts support the need for summer programs to fill the gaps created when schools close during the summer:According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 19.5 million low-income children receive free or reduced meals duringthe school year. During summer months, they may not have access to quality food to help them grow.The National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) states that the achievement gap between higher- and lowerincome youth can be attributed largely to access to summer learning opportunities and critical needs like healthymeals.Most students lose approximately two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over thesummer months.According to the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (Current Population Survey), 48.8 percent of youthbetween the ages of 16-24 were employed in July 2011, the month when youth employment usually peaks. This issignificantly lower than five years ago (59.2 percent) and even ten years ago (63.3 percent).Walmart’s Impact:Walmart’s summer giving campaign will focus on three critical needs:Healthy Meals – Serve more than 10 million meals to more than 160,000 school-age children in lower-income andinner-city areas.Learning Programs – Provide nearly 16,000 children access summer learning programs that stimulate their mindsand position them for success when school is in session.Summer Jobs – Provide summer jobs and skills training to nearly 3,000 inner-city youth.Walmart’s Summer Giving Campaign Snapshot: 5 million grant to the YMCA of the USA will help fund summer feeding programs in 300 urban and rural communities,including Sacramento, Calif.; Toledo, Ohio; and Houston, Texas. 4 million, two-year grant to NSLA will support programs intended to provide high-quality summer learning directlythrough school district-led programs that align with NSLA’s New Vision for Summer School principles. The programswill impact 7,200 middle school students in five cities including Pittsburg, Pa.; Providence, R.I.; Houston, Texas;Jacksonville, Fla.; Oakland, Calif.Additional grants to NSLA will fund a summit on summer health risks for youth ( 125,000), as well as SummerLearning Day 2012, a nationwide celebration of summer learning ( 200,000). 350,000 grant to Innovations in Civic Participation (ICP) will support summer learning activities for 622 students in10 communities including New York, N.Y.; Seattle, Wash.: Albuquerque, N.M.; Denver, Colo.; Belen, N.M.; Charleston,S.C.; Greensboro, N.C.; Onslow County, N.C.; Walterboro, N.C.; and Georgetown, S.C. 4 million grant to BELL Summer will support summer learning programs for 8,000 students in six communities,including Charlotte, N.C.; Winston Salem, N.C.; Spartanburg, S.C.; San Jose, Calif.; San Rafael, Calif.; and Springfield,Mass. 5 million grant to Brandeis University will support youth employment programs and grant access to job opportunitiesand skills training to nearly 3,000 American youth in seven communities including Phoenix, Ariz.; New York, N.Y.;Hartford, Conn.; Philadelphia, Pa.; Chicago, Ill.; Detroit, Mich.; and Los Angeles, Calif.Walmart’s Commitment to Hunger Relief:At some point during this year, it’s estimated that 50 million Americans won’t know where their next meal is coming from – manyof them children and seniors.
