Ruby Hexagon Blanketby Nova Seals for novamadeI have always associated crochet with afghans and cozy blankets. My husband’s grandmother, Ruby, crocheted afghansfor everyone she loved. As is often the case for (most of) us crafty types, we’d sooner make something for others andusually forget about ourselves. Of all the blankets that Ruby made in her lifetime, I think she kept very few, if any forherself. While I was working on this afghan, I thought about Ruby quite a bit. I would have liked to have talked to herabout it, and I would have loved showing it to her. I am pretty sure she would have enjoyed how colorful the blanketturned out (she liked working with bright colors). She would have also liked the hexagon motifs.I like traditional granny squares; but, I love hexagon motifs. I wanted a colorful hexagon with the look and feel of atraditional granny square. While I have chosen to use wool for this blanket, any worsted weight yarn will work (cotton will make for a heavyblanket though, just FYI). This project would be an ideal way to use up leftover bits of (same weight) yarn from otherprojects (which is something else Ruby would have really liked).1

Ruby Hexagon BlanketFinished Size: 53” wide (135 cm) and 49” (125 cm) long, measured from widest opposite points.Yarn: Knit Picks Wool of the Andes (100% wool; 110 yards/50g skein): Chestnut, Cloud, Cranberry, Orange, Pumpkin,Daffodil, Caution, Avocado, Jalapeno, Fern, Grass, Blue Ink, Williamsburg, Calypso Heather, Chambray (discontinued),Blackberry, Amethyst Heather, Iris Heather, Lullaby, Fairy Tale, Tulip, Carnation; Lion Brand Lion Wool (100% wool; 158yards/85g skein) Pumpkin, Sage, Lemongrass, Fern, Purple; Shepherd Classic (100% wool; 220 yards/100g): Pale Mint,Soft LimeHook: G/4.5 mmNotions: Tapestry Needle for Weaving in ends (and perhaps sewing together hexagons)Gauge: the diameter for the first round 1.5”(3.8cm) .8.5”The width of the hexagon from corner to corner is 8.5” (21.6cm)7.5”The width of the hexagon from side to side (flat sides) is 7.5” (19.1cm).Matching the gauge in the pattern is not overly critical; just ensure the size of your finished hexagons are consistent (ifyour hexagons measure 9 inches corner to corner, that is fine, as long as they all measure 9 inches corner to corner). The hexagons will be joined at their points, if your hexagons are not the same size, they will not join uniformly and youwill likely get puckering in the end product, take time to check your gauge.Skill level: Beginner friendlyNotes: The blanket is made up of 39 hexagons individually crocheted. The hexagons are comprised of seven rounds. Ifyou decide to sew the hexagons together with a tapestry needle, simply crochet your hexagons as described in thehexagon pattern, if you would, instead, like to crochet the hexagons together as you go, consider crocheting the first sixrounds of all the hexagons and then crocheting the seventh rounds of the hexagons as you crochet the afghan together(this will give you the opportunity to play around with the layout of your hexagons). The hexagons in this blanketappear to have white borders because the seventh round of all hexagons are crocheted in Wool of the Andes Cloud (offwhite).2

For people who are interested in such things: Each hexagon without the white border (so 6 rounds) uses approximately40 yards of worsted weight yarn. A complete hexagonal motif (or all 7 rounds) uses approximately 53 yards of worstedweight yarn. This blanket will have 550 ends to weave in at the end. Please consider crocheting over your ends as you go, so youdon’t have to weave in all the ends (and thus drive yourself insane); but, you will likely still have a couple of ends toweave in here and there (but it won’t be 550, which is a good thing).Hexagon Motif (Make 39):Rnd 1: With first color, ch6 and join with sl st in firstchain to form foundation ring. Continuing with firstcolor, ch3, work 2dc into ring, ch1, (3dc into ring, ch1)five (5) times, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Fastenoff. (You now have 6 groups of 3 stitches).Note: When attaching the second color, you might have to fightthe first round a little, because there are a lot of stitches in thefirst round. It will be worth it because the clusters of 3dc’s willgive you a “robust” center to your hexagon that looks a bit starlike, as opposed to a Spartan flower that you would get withclusters of 2dc’s.Rnd 2: Attach second color in any ch-1 sp, ch3, (dc,ch1, 2dc) in same ch-sp, ch1, * (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch1, repeat from * five (5) times, sl st in top of beg ch-3;these are the corners of the hexagonal motif. Fasten off.The corner units are the 2dc, ch1, 2dc clusters. These are the corners of yourhexagon.Rnd 3: Attach third color in any ch-1 corner space, ch3, (dc, ch1, 2dc)in same ch-sp, * ch1, 2dc in next ch-1 sp, ch1, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in nextch-1 corner sp, repeat from * four (4) times, ch1, 2dc in next ch-1 sp,ch1, sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.Rnd 4: Attach fourth color in any ch-1 corner sp, ch3 (dc, ch1, 2dc) insame ch-sp, * ch1, (2dc in next ch-1 sp, ch1) repeat to next corner,(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch-1 corner sp, repeat from * four (4) times;ch1, 2dc in next ch-1 sp, ch1, repeat to corner unit, sl st top of beg ch3. Finishing:Blocking: Block hexagons to size.Joining the Hexagons: Join hexagons by whipstitching pairs of them together with right sides facing each other. Join thehexagons column by column, and then whipstitch the columns together.Edging: There are two edge rows or borders that are crocheted onto the blanket after the hexagons have been joined. Forthe purposes of illustration, the photographed examples are edged in green (border 1) and brown (border 2).Border 1: With Wool of the Andes Cloud (the same off-white yarn used in the seventh row of all of hexagons, thusgiving them a bordered effect), attach yarn to any ch-1 corner sp, ch3 (dc, ch1, 2dc) in same ch-sp, * ch1, (2dc in nextch-1 sp, ch1) repeat to next corner; if the next corner is a corner unit (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch-1 corner sp. If the nextcorner is a corner join, you will have to work double crochet decreases. When you encounter a corner join for the first border, you will work a decrease by: yo, insert hook into the ch-1 spbefore the corner join, hook yarn and pull through two loops (2 stitches on hook); yo, insert hook through corner join stitches,4

hook yarn and pull through two stitches on hook (3 loops on hook, there really are 3 loops in the picture below, themiddle one is a bit smooshed);yo, insert hook into next ch-1sp after the corner join, hook yarn and pull through all (5) loops on the hook, ch-1.Continue in this manner until you reach the beg ch-3, sl st in top of ch-3 to join. Fasten off.Border 2: With Wool of the Andes Grass (green), attach yarn to any ch-1 corner space, work as you worked the firstborder; but, when you encounter the corner join decrease worked on the previous row (or border),5

you will again work a decrease, it’s a little different than the one worked for Border #1 though. This time in the ch-1 spbefore the decrease at the corner join, you will work 1dc, yo, insert hook in the same ch-1 space that you just worked thedc in, hook yarn and pull loop though (3 loops on hook),yo, pull through 2 loops on your hook; yo, insert hook into next ch-1 space (after the decrease in the previous row) hookyarn, pull through (4 loops on hook), yo and pull yarn through 2 loops (leaving 3 loops on hook), yo and pull it throughremaining 3 loops on hook, work 1 dc in the same ch-1 sp, ch-1. Continue on in the same way until you reach the beg ch-3, ch-1, sl st in top of thech-3. Fasten off.6

ch-1 sp, ch1) repeat to next corner; if the next corner is a corner unit (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch-1 corner sp. If the next corner is a corner join, you will have to work double crochet decreases. When you encounter a corner join for the first border, you will work a decrease by: yo, insert hook into the ch-1 sp before the corner join,

We are installing Ruby On Rails on Linux using rbenv. It is a lightweight Ruby Version Management Tool. The rbenv provides an easy installation procedure to manage various versions of Ruby, and a solid environment for developing Ruby on Rails applications. Follow the steps given below to install Ruby on Rails using rbenv tool.

The ruby command can be used to execute Ruby source code contained in a file. By convention, Ruby files have the suffix .rb. Here is "Hello" in Ruby: % cat hello.rb puts "Hello, world!" % ruby hello.rb Hello, world! Note that the code does not need to be enclosed in a method—"top level" expressions are evaluated when encountered.
