Liturgy UpdateArchdiocese of New YorkVol 8.3 - June 2021Of ce of LiturgyLITURGY UPDATELiturgical MemosDays of Prayer and SpecialObservancesThe USCCB has issued a helpful listingof special days of prayer and otherobservances throughout the year. There have been frequent additions tothese days in the past several years(e.g., World Day of Prayer of the Careof Creation, Sunday of the Word ofGod, etc.), and this list may be useful topastors and others entrusted withliturgical planning.June 3:Solemnity of the Most Holy Bodyand Blood of ChristA procession of the Blessed Sacramentmay take place on this day or onanother appropriate day near this feast. The Congregation for Divine Worshipand the Discipline of the Sacramentshas indicated that processions shouldnot take place solely within the body ofa church, as this practice does not fullyexpress the character of a “procession,”which should move from one place toanother. A procession with the BlessedSacrament should instead ordinarilymove from one church to another;when necessary, the procession mayreturn to the same church from where itbegan. More information on the historya n d p ra c t i c e o f Co r p u s C h r i s t iprocessions may be found in the June2018 edition of the Liturgy Update.July 4:Independence DayThis year, July 4 falls on the 14thSunday in Ordinary Time. As such, theMass formulary for Independence Daymay not be used in lieu of the Sundayprayers and readings. However, thehomily and the Universal Prayer mayappropriately re ect the prayerintentions of the United States. The USCCB’s Divine Worship Secretariat recently announcedthe approval and imminent publishing of a number of newliturgical books, along with several others which have beennewly translated. The Secretariat also o ered updatesconcerning the ongoing work of editing and translating otherritual texts. The archdiocesan Liturgy O ce frequentlyreceives these kinds of questions concerning the publicationstatus of various liturgical books, and so, a summary of theUSCCB’s recent announcements is given here as a service toour readersffiwww.nyliturgy.orgfffl:fiLiturgy UpdateForthcoming New andRevised Liturgical Books1

Liturgy UpdateArchdiocese of New YorkVol 8.3 - June 2021Of ce of Liturgy A Hymnal for the Breviary was approved by theUSCCB in November 2019. Included withinthe Latin editio typica altera of the Liturgy ofthe Hours is a theologically rich corpus of 294hymns preceding the various Hours. Theearliest works come from the fourth century, such as the frequently used Te Deum and anumber of hymns composed by Saint Ambroseand Prudentius. These texts have been newlytranslated into English and will appear in theforthcoming revised Liturgy of the Hours. Mosthymns in the Latin Liturgia Horarum and theirnew English translations are set in Long Meter (8 8 8 8), and are suited both to Gregorian chantmelodies and many recognizable hymn tunes. Because the revised translation of the four-volume textof the Liturgy of the Hours is not expected to be completed for several years, the new hymn texttranslations will be published in late 2021 for the immediate study and use of the clergy and faithful. The USCCB is also investigating the possibility of administering the hymns via OneLicense, so thatthese new texts can be easily inserted into worship aids. Relatedly, the revised Liturgy of the Hours project is currently estimated to be completed by 2024. A revised translation of the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults [OCIA] was approved by the USCCBin November 2019. This text is currently being rearranged from the format of the Latin editio typica tomatch that of the current US edition, while also preserving some current USA practices, such as thecombined rites and the administering of the Oil of Catechumens during the Preparation Rites ratherthan at the Easter Vigil. In a related project, the USCCB’s O ce of Canonical A airs is working on arevision of the National Statutes on the Catechumenate, and thesewill be implemented at the same time as the revised OCIA text. The new version of the National Statutes may be shorter than thecurrent text, since experts have observed that not all the itemswere particular only to the United States The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of theSacraments has con rmed the revised translation of the ritualbook Ordination of a Bishop, of Priests, and of Deacons for liturgicaluse in the United States. Approved by the USCCB at its June2019 plenary meeting, the text was con rmed by the Holy Seeon February 22, 2021, and received by the USCCB in midMarch. The USCCB’s Secretariat of Divine Worship is nalizingits customary editorial review of the text, and it is expected thatthis ritual book will be published later this year. The revisedtext must be used as of the First Sunday of Advent (November28), 20212ffffifi.www.nyliturgy.orgfifi.fiLiturgy Update

Liturgy UpdateArchdiocese of New YorkVol 8.3 - June 2021Of ce of Liturgy In 2017, the USCCB published the rst English translation ofExorcisms and Related Supplications, which continues to be availablefor purchase by bishops, exorcists, and others designated by abishop. While this ritual book is intended for exorcists, it includesan appendix of prayers for use by anyone. Accordingly, a smallpaperback volume containing this appendix, titled Prayers Againstthe Powers of Darkness, was also published in 2017. In consultationwith theological experts in this area of pastoral care, USCCBCommunications has recently published an expanded prayer bookdesigned for general use. Prayers to Protect Us: A Co ection of Prayers,Litanies, Hymns, and Readings contains “a variety of material meantto strengthen both the mind and the heart in the struggle againstevil.” This new book includes a foreword from HartfordArchbishop Leonard P. Blair, Chairman of the USCCB’sCommittee on Divine Worship, and is available for 21.95 at theUSCCB’s online bookstore and at other online retailers. The draft text of the Bendicional, or Spanish-language Book ofBlessings, is currently being revised by the USCCB’s Divine WorshipSecretariat in light of several changes requested by the Holy See that would align this text moreclosely with the US English version of the Book of Blessings. A bilingual version of the text is notanticipated, as the resulting book would be of a very large size and too cumbersome for ritual use. The Lectionary for Masses with Children was granted an interim approval for three years in 1992, but thispermission has long since expired. Notwithstanding, the USCCB’s Divine Worship Secretariat hasclari ed that the text may continue to be sold and also used in Masses with children. Lastly, a new translation ofthe Order of Penance will bevoted on by the USCCB attheir June 2021 meeting. Thelatest version of the textprepared by ICEL includessome slight di erences to thePrayer of Absolution, the Actof Contrition, and othertexts. The Order of Penance isnot a ritual book that is usedvery frequently by priests, but the praenotanda of the riteis theologically rich, and it is hoped that the publication of the newly revised translation may serve asan opportunity for renewed re ection on this text and a revived catechesis on the celebration of thesacrament of gy Update

Liturgy UpdateArchdiocese of New YorkVol 8.3 - June 2021Of ce of LiturgyNew Document on Parish Music ProgramsThe American Guild of Organists [AGO] has recently published a usefulguide for evaluating the music needs of parishes and hiring new musicsta . The document, “Employing Musicians in Religious Institutions: AHandbook for Committees and Candidates” covers a wide array of topics, including: typical responsibilities of choir directors and organists, searchcommittees, application procedures, compensation considerations, wedding and funeral guidelines, hiring substitute organists, and annualemployment review suggestions. AGO no longer publishes compensationscales for musicians, but the new guidelines do o er helpful advice formaking these sorts of determinations during the hiring process. Thehandbook may be downloaded directly from the AGO websiteLiturgical Q and A: Music at FuneralThe Liturgy O ce has recently received a number of questions concerning the use of secular music atfunerals, including songs that have a particularly cultural, but not overtly religious, signi cance for thecommunity. It is often the case that family and friends of the deceased wish to include secular songs orinstrumental works within Christian funerals. Even when such works have special meaning to thedeceased or the mourners, they still may be inappropriate for use in liturgical celebrations whenthoughtfully and carefully considered in light of the focus of the Church’s funeral liturgies and thepurpose of sacred music. The Order of Christian Funerals indicates that the music selected for funeral ritesshould express Christ's Paschal Mystery and aChristian's participation in that Mystery (30).As well, the texts intended to be sung at theliturgy should be drawn chie y from HolyScripture and from liturgical sources(Sacrosanctum concilium, 121). In sum, "musicshould never be used to memorialize thedeceased, but rather to give praise to the Lord, whose Paschal Sacri ce has freed us from thebonds of death” (USCCB, Sing to the Lord, 248)A request is sometimes also made for the use ofpre-recorded music at funeral liturgies. Thebishops of the United States have indicated thatsuch music “lacks the authenticity provided by the living liturgical assembly gathered for the SacredLiturgy” (Sing to the Lord, 93). It is not pre-recorded music, but rather, the “lives of the faithful, theirpraise, su erings, prayer, and work [which are to be] united with those of Christ and so acquire a newvalue” through the celebration of the liturgy (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1368). For this reason, prerecorded music should not, as a general norm, be used within the Church’s funeral rites. Alternatively, both secular and pre-recorded music may be played during other times during the period of leave-taking,such as at a repast following the funeral rites4fi.ff.swww.nyliturgy.orgflfiffifffffiLiturgy Update

Liturgy UpdateArchdiocese of New YorkVol 8.3 - June 2021Of ce of LiturgyNoti cation on Upcoming FeastThis year, the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) falls on a Saturday and is immediately followed on Sundayby the Feast of the Holy Family. In cases of consecutive feast days, there are often questions regardingwhich Mass is to be celebrated on Saturday evening. In the case of Christmas and Holy Family, both aredays of precept, but Christmas occupies a higher place on the Table of Liturgical Days. Therefore, ifpastors schedule Mass on the evening of Saturday, December 25, the Nativity Mass during the Day iscelebrated. Notwithstanding, most parishes in the archdiocese do not o er a Mass on Christmas nightIn these types of situations, questions can also arise concerning the ful llment of the obligation to attendMass. In the opinion of most canonists, each obligation (in this case, one for Christmas and another forHoly Family) must be ful lled with a separate Mass. The ful llment of the Mass obligation does notdepend upon the Mass prayers and readings, but rather, on the time of day at which one attends Mass. Forexample, the obligation for the Nativity may be ful lled from the evening of Friday, December 24 throughSaturday, December 25. One may attend the Vigil Mass of the Nativity, a Mass during the Night, or amorning/afternoon/evening Mass on December 25. The obligation for the Holy Family may be ful lledfrom the evening of Saturday, December 25 through Sunday, December 26. That is, one may attend anafternoon/evening Mass on December 25 (even though these are rarely scheduled), or a morning/afternoon/evening Mass on December 26. The following chart may be helpfulNativity of the Lord (Christmas)Holy FamilyObligation may be ful lled from the evening ofFriday, December 24 throughSaturday, December 25Obligation may be ful lled from the evening ofSaturday, December 25 throughSunday, December 26Obligation may be ful lled atObligation may be ful lled at Vigil Mass or Mass at Night of the Nativit Afternoon/evening Mass on December 2 Morning/afternoon/evening Mass on December 25 Morning/afternoon/evening Mass on December 26The situation with the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God on Saturday, January 1, 2022 is morestraightforward. In the United States, the obligation to attend Mass on the Solemnity of Mary isabrogated when this celebration occurs on a Monday or a Saturday. In this case, because the Solemnityoccurs on a Saturday and is not a day of precept this year, the Vigil Mass of the Epiphany is celebrated atevening MassesO ce of LiturgFather Matthew S.
