UPDATED AS OF AUGUST 2018Honda FitCadillac EscaladeTOWABLES FOR2015E44FAMILYMOTORCOACHING JANUARY 2015ach year since 1999, Family Motor Coaching haspublished a list of vehicles in a particular modelyear that can be towed four wheels down behinda motorhome. Beginning around October of eachyear, the calls start to come in to FMC staff from membersasking when the towing guide for the upcoming modelyear will be published. Well, that time has arrived. While some motorhomers choose to use a dolly orflatbed trailer to tow their vehicle, the majority prefer thesimplicity of four-wheels-down towing. Towing in thismanner eliminates any concerns about where to store thedolly or trailer upon arriving at a campsite or returning toa stationary residence. Plus, once the towing equipment —base plate, tow bar, and lights — is installed, hooking upthe towed vehicle to the motorhome and preparing it to betowed should be a quick and safe procedure. The list that appears on the following pages represents2015-model-year cars, trucks, and sport-utility vehiclesthat manufacturers have indicated can be towed fourwheels down behind a motorhome without significantmodifications.A number of vehicles from last year’s chart have beendiscontinued or deemed not towable and are not on the2015 list. They include the Honda CR-V, which is nowoutfitted with a continuously variable transmission(CVT). The Dodge Challenger owners manual nowindicates that model is not towable. Subaru no longeroffers the hatchback version of its WRX STI, and theSubaru Legacy 2.5i and Outback 2.5i cannot be towedfour wheels down because a manual transmission isno longer an option. Also, Toyota has discontinued theMatrix, and Chevrolet no longer offers the Captiva Sport. However, a few new vehicles have been added. Theyinclude the front-wheel-drive Honda Fit, which has acurb weight of 2,513 pounds and a length of 160 inches. The listing for Cadillac now includes the four-wheeldrive Escalade, which weighs 5,840 pounds and is 203.9inches long. And Chevrolet’s redesigned midsize pickup,

Chevrolet ColoradoColorado, and its upscale twin, the GMC Canyon, areavailable with curb weights that start at 4,100 poundsand lengths of 212.4 inches to 224.6 inches.BEFORE YOU BUYTowing information may be difficult to obtain directlyfrom the auto manufacturers, and oftentimes dealershipsalespeople don’t understand the concept of recreationaltowing or have limited knowledge about which vehiclescan be towed four wheels down. That’s why it’s important to do your homework whenit comes to selecting your next towed vehicle. Think ofthe “Towables For 2015” guide as the first step in yourdiscovery process. Also, you may want to check the“Technical Forums” at FMCA.com to see whether therehave been reports about towing particular vehicles.Following are some additional guidelines: Before purchasing a vehicle, make sure thedealership representative with whom you arespeaking understands that you are looking totow the vehicle and not to use it to tow a trailer. Next, and perhaps the most important step, is torequest that you be shown a copy of the vehicle’sowners manual. Once you have the manual inhand, find the section that addresses four-wheelsdown towing — often under a heading such as“Recreational Towing.” (Do not confuse this with“Emergency Towing,” which may be possible fourwheels down on a limited basis for emergencypurposes only.) In this section you will find specificguidelines regarding towing procedures, necessarymodifications, and safety issues pertaining to thevehicle. Many manufacturers have their ownersmanuals available online. If you have a particularvehicle in mind, visit the manufacturer’s Web siteand click on the “Owners” link to see whether themanual for that vehicle is available to download.GMC CanyonThe following information is intended to helpmotorhome owners select a vehicle that is approvedby its manufacturer for flat towing. The informationwas gathered from automobile manufacturersand vehicle owners manuals and pertains only tomodel-year 2015 vehicles. The information may ormay not be correct for earlier or later models. Whileevery attempt has been made to present accurateinformation, continued vehicle improvements andproduction-line changes could alter the informationand render it out-of-date. Before purchasing anyvehicle, consult its owners manual to determinewhether the vehicle can be flat towed behind amotorhome and what procedures must be taken toprepare the vehicle for towing. Towing surveys forprior years are available at www.FMCmagazine.com.A guide to 2015-model-yearvehicles that manufacturershave indicated can berecreationally towed behinda motorhome withoutsignificant modifications.continued »JANUARY 2015 FAMILYMOTORCOACHING45

Once you are confident the vehicle is towableand you are comfortable with the towing setupprocedures and guidelines, ask a few morequestions before making the purchase. Findout from the dealer, manufacturer, or ownersmanual how towing will affect the vehicle’swarranty. Also, ask the dealer rep whether anyservice bulletins have been released that relateto towing the vehicle behind a motorhome. If possible, have the vehicle weighed. Yourmotorhome has been given a gross combinationweight rating (GCWR), which is the maximumallowable combined weight of the motorhome andthe attached towed vehicle. The accompanyingcharts include approximate curb weights assupplied by the manufacturers; however, optionalequipment and accessories can increase theweight of the vehicle. So, make sure that itsweight will not push the combined weight abovethe GCWR. It’s also a good idea to weigh yourmotorhome (see “Weigh Me!” February 2011,page 38). Because of overloading issues, somemotorhomes should not tow anything. In fact, certain motorhomes may need to have theirloads lightened before being driven solo.TOWING EQUIPMENTOnce you’ve selected a vehicle for towing, the next stepis to purchase a tow bar and base plate. Severalcompanies sell tow bars with varying conveniencePHOTO COURTESY OF ROADMASTER46FAMILYMOTORCOACHING JANUARY 2015and safety features. The most important factor whenselecting a towing package is to make sure it is rated tohandle the weight of the towed vehicle. Have the initialinstallation done by qualified and experienced personnel. After installation, check the equipment frequently anduse it only in the manner for which it was designed. Aswith any mechanical gear, proper maintenance canincrease the life of towing equipment. However, therecomes a time when the equipment must be replaced toprevent a dangerous situation. Frequent inspectionswill alert you to the need. When hooking up the towed vehicle, do not let yourselfbe distracted. Also, get in the habit of checking the towingequipment each time you stop for fuel or to take a break.Walk around the towed vehicle to make sure the tires areproperly inflated and do not exhibit any unusual wearpatterns. Perform these safety inspections each timeyou’re stopped and you will decrease the chances of apotential problem while on the road.Safety is the most important issue for motorhomerswhen they operate their coaches. That’s why, for safety’ssake, every motorhome owner who tows a vehicle fourwheels down should consider using an auxiliary brakingsystem. Many motorhome, chassis, and automobilemanufacturers recommend that supplemental brakes beused on any towed vehicle.A question that is often asked concerningsupplemental brakes involves the legal ramificationsof not using them. Not all jurisdictions mandatesupplemental brakes on towed vehicles, but when itcomes to four-wheels-down towing, safety should beparamount. Your motorhome’s brakes were designedto stop the weight of the coach. Add several thousandpounds of towed vehicle weight to the equation, andthe motorhome’s braking system is being asked todo more than it was intended. The extra weight canreduce the effectiveness of the brakes in emergencystopping situations, as well as lead to premature —and potentially costly —wear on the motorhome’s braking system.A supplemental brake provides stopping assistanceto the tandem, allowing the towed vehicle’s brakes toslow the vehicle and reduce the weight inertia that’spushing forward against the rear of the motorhome. Most of us have never heard anyone say that the brakeson their motorhome stop it too quickly. Nevertheless, many of us have seen what happens when brakes don’twork quickly enough.Although this guide focuses on vehicles that can beflat towed, there is no single best way to tow. Each vehicleand each method has its advantages and disadvantages. If a vehicle you already own or wish to purchase cannotbe flat towed, it may be possible to tow it on a dolly ortrailer or have adaptations made to the vehicle to makeit towable.

Buick RegalCadillac SRXREADING THE CHARTBased on questions we’ve received from readers in past years, here are some clarifications regarding information that appearson the accompanying towing chart. A “Yes” in the column under the type of transmission (auto or manual) means that whenequipped with that type of transmission, the vehicle is towable; “No” means it is not towable. If the model is not available witha particular transmission, “N/A” appears in the column. The “Approximate Curb Weight” and “Total Length” figures are for avehicle’s base model. “TBD” means that as of press time that piece of information was still to be determined. Keep in mind alsothat although some vehicles are indicated as being towable, not all trim lines, engine configurations, etc. within that model linemay be towable; always refer to the particular vehicle’s owners manual to be RB WEIGHTTOTALLENGTHEnclave1YesN/AAll-wheel drive65 mph/None24,922 lbs.201.9 in.EnclaveYesN/AFront-wheel drive65 mph/None4,724 lbs.201.9 in.Regal 2.0-liter GSNoYesFront-wheel driveNone3,710 lbs.190.2 in.123Remove the 20-amp ECM1 fuse in the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC).
