At TACT Architecture Inc. wepractice a type of modernism that we call WarmModernism. Many people associate conventionalmodernism with a certain clinical coldness, butyou’ll find this is not the case at AYC. At Tact, ourdesigns are unequivocally modern yet throughthe use of natural materials, they are also warm.Inviting. Livable. The design of AYC is inspiredby this approach to architecture. We see AYCas sophisticated yet approachable. Modern, yetcomfortable.To what extent does the neighbourhood settinginform your design process?Davenport and Bedford occupies a unique part ofthe city — between the interesting cultural zoneof The Annex and the sophistication of Yorkville.There is a playfulness in the tower design inspiredby The Annex community while there is more ofa classic grounded approach to the design of thetowns. AYC was inspired by the mix of these twoestablished communities.Can you tell us a little about the buildingmaterials you chose for AYC, and why?The selection of the material palette was againinspired by our philosophy of warm modernism.A rich and vibrant natural stone for use at thebase of the tower around the lobby. Softer naturalstone material for the towns and the lower floorsof the tower and podium. Wood accents for thecanopies and entrance locations. By blendingmore conventional contemporary buildingAY C C O N D O S . C O Mmaterials with these warmer organic elements,we were able to create spaces that are bothwelcoming and refined.What are your favourite features of theTownhome design?The townhouses are masculine and robust. Theysit firmly on the ground and they are assertivewith their character, yet they are also soft andsophisticated through the use of warm materials.In this way they are simultaneously confident,inviting and remarkably livable.What are your favourite features of the AYCCondominium design?AYC is unique in that it has a changing floordesign as you move up through the building. Thisallows for a more interesting shape for the toweras it rises from its base. The careful location ofbalconies throughout the building, also create aunique pattern and aesthetic for the tower. Theend result is a compelling, dynamic structure thatcreates a unique presence on the city skyline.What is your ultimate goal when it comes toyour work on AYC?Designing a residential building in the city ofToronto is a challenging feat. There are manystakeholders involved with many, many issueson the table. If at the end of such a long andcomplex process, the building we originallyconceived of is able to emerge unscathed, thenwe have succeeded as architects.AYC accomplishes just that.
