TheEAGLESN E S TThe Troop One Newsletter2014 - 2015 VOL I Aug-SepScoutmasterNotesWelcome back! Troop 1 has begun a newscouting year with what is likely the largestmembership in our 100 year history and boy arewe ready to roll. We have a full year planned ofbrotherhood, learning, and lots of fun thrown in.This marks the fifth time I have written thiswelcome back letter for this publication as yourscoutmaster and I could not be more proud ofwhere we are as a troop at this point in thejourney. Being a part of the lives of those 90 boyswho call our troop their home is very special. Eachhas a unique personality that never ceases toamaze me!I am writing this as I am riding with mydaughter through the hills of Virginia as shereturns for her senior year of college inMassachusetts. The scenery on this road is someof the most spectacular you will ever see andcauses me to think of how lucky we are asmembers of Troop 1 to get to experience suchsimilar spots such as we will experience thisweekend as we hike to Shining Rock. These are thethings that really make you appreciate the gifts wehave been given in this world. And what about all of those things we haveexperienced as a troop since our last publication inMay! The top of the list would have to be ourweek at Camp Ho Non Wah in June when 72scouts and a handful of very brave leaders headedto the coast with something new as most of thescouts traveled by charter bus. The brotherhoodof scouting was at work just before our departureas the boys of both Troops 1 and 2 entered thedoors of the Church of the Advent as a unifiedgroup for a special scout prayer service. It wasthen on to camp and our campsite of New Shirmerwhich had been greatly expanded by camp staff toaccommodate the 80 people we had with us – thelargest amount of Scouts and Scouters that camphad ever had in one campsite. And we had one ofthe most successful weeks of camp everhighlighted by that traditional match of ultimate

TheEAGLESN E S TThe Troop One Newsletter2014 - 2015 VOL I Aug-SepScoutmasterNotesfrisbee with the camp staff on the final night thistime coming on a full moon and Friday the 13th! Ifthere is ever a time where I feel the destiny of ourtroop is out of my hands it must be during thatexciting hour of play which is totally dictated byour boys. The spirit of the evening is so excitingand there is no experience that compares to theintensity of play and the support the playersreceive from their brothers on the sideline. Ourboys played and cheered their hearts out and wewere ahead 9-7 before the staff scored threestraight points and took the victory scoring theirtenth point. We look forward to returning to thebanks of the Bohicket next June for our 9th straightyear to continue our great traditions.July found 22 very lucky scouts heading tothe metropolis of Charlotte for a 3 night scoutingextravaganza as we camped at the McDowellNature Preserve and visited the US WhitewaterCenter daily for an assortment of activities. Weeven squeezed in the Wilderness Survival MeritBadge with scouts building shelters in which tospend the night. The very next weekend 13 scoutsand Mark Mullen headed up to Camp Bob Hardinto complete their Ordeal Weekend and becomemembers of scouting’s honor society known as TheOrder of the Arrow. And we have just returnedfrom a weekend of lots of water sports at LakeSummit.Oh what fun it must be to call Troop 1home! Ted

OutdoorsI am so excited about the any opportunitieswe at Troop 1 have in front of us this year. So far, wehave already been blessed with wonderful trips toboth the white water center in Charlotte for 3 actionpacked days and Lake Summit. Several of our Scoutswere able to achieve their wilderness survivalbadges, where they actually built their own sheltersand resided in it overnight! What anaccomplishment! Our most recent adventure was toLake Summit, where we all were grateful to ourleaders Ted Gage and Walter Oates for opening theirproperty to 44 energy filled Scouts. Several of ourboys earned water sports badges while skiing andwake boarding as well as earned a portion of theirmotor boating badge.Okay, now for what lies ahead. In a about aweek, Troop 1 will depart the Scout Hut and head toone of my favorite spots; Pisgah National Forest. Wewill camp at Graveyard Fields Friday evening anddepart early the next morning for a 10 mile figure 8day hike. This trip will count towards a hiking meritbadge which requires several legs of at least tenmiles and of course 2 nights on the ground. If anyonehas any gear questions, feel free to call me any time.Towards the end of September we will embark to theshores of Edisto Beach for swimming, fishing, clamming, and fellowship at one of our most funtrips. The troop 1 grill be make this trip again withthe famous ribs returning too!We then take a short time off and will returnfor a spooktacular event Halloween night for a rockclimbing trip! Sure to be a fun time. If you areplanning on going on this trip, text or email me yourcandy bar request and you will receive a king size barof your choice. As always, we appreciate all the parentalsupport. I promise these trips are very rewarding forboth the father and son! I can speak fromexperience James is now a 4th year Scout and thetime I have spent with him on these trips watchinghim grow and challenge himself have been trulyremarkable. I encourage all dads to come along andenjoy one of our trips, I guarantee you will be back. OutdoorsBSA Camp Bayern in the German AlpsOn July 19, I left the ski-resort town ofGarmisch, Germany for Camp Bayern, which islocated between the mountains Kramer andZugspitze. I arrived early with my cousins, Taitand Aidan, and we were led up a hill and acrossa field to the campsites. Had I not done myresearch, I would have been surprised to findthat there was nothing but grass and a forest, asopposed to Camp Ho Non Wah. There is onlyone permanent building, Kean’s Lodge. This wasthe first of several differences that I noticed.Soon, the rest of my host troop, Troop 46,arrived and we set up camp, kind of literally.Another difference was the cooking, eating, andcleaning that we did because our troop hadelected to do patrol cooking, in which the staffbrought us food (e.g., pancake mix, eggs, milk,OJ, apples, lunch meat, bratwursts, cheese, peanut butter, etc.) and we cooked and cleaned. The “dining hall” was almost equally primitive. The staff cooked and you brought your mess kitand washed it yourself. A rather unfortunatedifference was the half-mile hike to the showersand the 200-meter dash to the bathrooms! Thebest difference was the view, a magnificentalpine landscape in which we woke up to see thetallest mountain in Germany. Another bonuswas the high-adventure activities, such asmountain biking, hiking, and ropes courses.Unfortunately, I was not able to take part in this. There were, however, some similarities, such as a scoutmaster and SPL shoot-off in theform of the “Robinhood shout-out” (they didn’thave a shotgun range and troop vs. troop games,in the form of life-size foosball or, in Germany,“kicker” with teams of 10). And then there wasall the familiar rain (it rained for 2 s straight. All in all, it was a pleasant campingexperience and I would highly recommend it. Will Nowatka

AnnouncementsA Board of Review is the final step in the process by which a Scout advances in rank.It also encourages Scouts to review "the basics" and gives troop leaders valuable feedback. Two or threecommittee members of Troop 1 will usually conduct a Board of Review. The Board provides an opportunity forthe Scout to accept responsibility and develop and practice skills needed in an interview situation. The Board ofReview is a time to determine the Scout's knowledge, attitudes, accomplishments, and acceptance of ScoutingIdeals. Scout Spirit is defined as living the Scout Oath and Scout Law in a Scout's everyday life. The board shouldmake sure that good standards have been met in all phases of the Scout's life. A discussion of the Scout Oath andScout Law is in keeping with the purpose of the review, to make sure that the candidate recognizes andunderstands the value of Scouting in his home, unit, school, and community.Follow the f lowchart below to schedule your Scoutmaster Conference and Board of Review (BOR).Boards will only be scheduled on the first and third Tuesdays of the month unless more dates are needed duringbusy times. You should make your request no later than the Sunday evening prior to your requested date. YourBOR date will be scheduled as soon as possible and you will be emailed or called back to confirm.
