Dear Friends,The old year is fast concluding with Christmas nextThursday and the New Year beginning the week afterthat. How soon it all happens. Yet we are already in a newliturgical year that began the First Sunday of Advent. The wonder of God’s unfolding grace, plan, and providence is a source of wonder and awe. We are growing inage, wisdom (hopefully), and grace. If we but listen toGod’s word as we hear it today and ponder it as Mary did,the incarnation of God’s love will unfold in us in wonderful new ways. That is the hope of theseason and of Christmas. The word spoken to Mary today in“The word spokenthe story of Gabriel’s annunciation toto Mary her, is the same word spoken to eachone of us, that we have found favoris the same wordwith God, that we are dearly, dearlyspoken tobeloved, and that we are full of grace.each one of us.”The wonder of the incarnation to me isthat I am–you are–each one of us is–full of grace. Her story is our story! The grace of God has not beenrationed to us in little bits, but givenfully. In Baptism and Confirmation, the fullness of theSpirit has been given to each one of us. And the love ofGod, God’s own life, is fully given again and again in theEucharist, wholly and completely to each one of us fornourishment and strength. That should take our breath away, and it does. We dowell to ponder the Word as Mary did, let it gestate in us,let it grow in us. Just as Mary became pregnant throughthe ear by hearing and receiving God’s Word, allowing itto become flesh in her by the power of the Holy Spirit, sothe same mystery happens in us, each year coming moreand more to be in us. We are growing in age, wisdom, andgrace. The incarnation of God’s love is informing moreand more of us body, soul, and spirit, as we open to it andsay “yes”! Let it come, let it be!Let it be! Mother Mary said, let it be! And so say weher sons and daughters, born again thru faith in her sonJesus by water and the Holy Spirit. In that way she is ourmother too, and we are so grateful for what she has taughtus. We are alive in Christ, and becoming more alive, fully alive in the incarnation of God’s love. I love it!And I hope you do too.In the wonderful hope and love of Advent,Fourth Sunday of AdventDecember 21, 2008The child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.— Luke 1:35Welcome.Guests and Visitors! We’re so glad you’re here andinvite you to walk the path tofaith with us. The communityof St. Thomas strives to growcloser to Christ in all that wedo. We care for one anotherand together with Christ, wemake a difference.Would you like to becomea Parishioner? It was awonderful community experience of people helpingpeople to do a very simple thing. The trees arebeautiful and set a very peaceful atmosphere forAdvent. Thank you for sharing your time and energy.Fourth Sunday of AdventFROM AGE TO AGE AND PLACE TO PLACE — There is a teaching from the rabbis that “When Israelwanders, God stays with them; when Israel stays in one place, God wanders.” Of course God never left thechosen people; this is the rabbis’ way of saying that human beings can get too grounded in earthly things anddwelling places. Our hearts get crowded, there is no room, and so God must wander. The people of ancientIsrael were for much of their history a nomadic, wandering, tribal people. Their time in the desert and theiryears of exile in Babylon were the high points of their religious formation. Many feared that if a mortalascended the throne of Israel as king, then God would be dethroned as the true king of Israel. Likewise theyfeared that if God had a permanent dwelling or temple, then they would no longer know the shekinah of God,their term for God pitching a tent in their midst, joining them as a companion in their journey. These fearsunderlie the voice of the prophet Nathan in today’s first reading.A PLACE FOR GOD TO DWELL — In a few short days, on Christmas morning, we will hear John’s Gospelaccount of the incarnation: “And the Word became Flesh, and came to dwell among us” (John 1:14). John usesthe Greek version of shekinah to emphasize that Jesus, God among us, pitched his tent on earth to be our companion on our journey. For much of his earthly ministry, Jesus was an itinerant preacher, a nomad. While mostof us live in permanent places and are not called to this kind of mobility, we would do well to ask if there is stilla place in our hearts for Jesus to pitch his tent. As we have surely heard and read over the past several weeks, weought to “keep Christ in Christmas.” This is a lesson for all seasons today, a lesson that Israel struggled to learn,a lesson that our own Church has struggled with as it assumed the trappings of earthly status. We need to makesure that when God-in-Flesh comes knocking at our door, we can respond that there is plenty of room within.Today’s Readings: 2 Samuel 7:1–5, 8b–12, 14a, 16; Psalm 89:2–5, 27, 29; Romans 16:25–27; Luke 1:26–38Copyright 2005, World Library Publications. Pastoral CarePrayer Shawl Testimony!I recently underwent extensive heart surgery atEdward Hospital, valve replacement and at tripleby-pass, and am writing you to commend the peopleand ministries of St. Thomas in the support andcomfort they provided to both my wife and I duringthis most difficult period. During the first few daysafter the operation, the most critical period when thedoctors and hospital were trying to stabilize myheart rhythm and other bodily functions, one of thepastoral ministers brought me a prayer shawl. I cannot relate to you properly how much comfort I derived the moment I placed this shawl over myshoulders. For the approximate fifteen days of myhospital stay this shawl remained my constant companion providing comfort, warmth and just a feelingof well being and a sense that many people and theirprayers were being directed toward my well being. This is a very powerful and moving experience. Inow keep this shawl in my bedroom at home as areminder of its comfort. In addition to the shawl I must also comment theSt. Thomas Eucharist Ministers for visiting meevery day in the hospital. The time they spent praying with my wife and me, providing us with communion and encouragement that improvement in myhealth was only a matter of time and to not losefaith, was greatly appreciated and I am sure played amajor part in my recovery. As the Director of Pastoral Care I thought youshould know how much comfort and joy the thingsthat are being done by your ministers bring to theSt. Thomas parishioners and to this one in particular. Kindly extend to them on behalf of my wife andme, our gratitude and thanks. For all those who give generously of their timeand talents to the St. Thomas communityespecially Pastoral Care,Outreach & Social Justice, andthe Coordinators of Adult Faith Formation,We in
