Kennedy’s Inaugural Address, January 20,1961Over 50 years ago a then young forty-three-year old John F. Kennedy utteredthese now famous words, and ushered in a new era in the United States, an erafilled with the spirit of giving, not getting. His charge led to the formulation of the Peace Corps. Through this program,Americans volunteered to help underdeveloped nations in areas such as education, farming, health care, and construction. Their numbers grew to 10,000 beforehis assassination in 1963, and since that time, over 200,000 volunteers servedworldwide. Our parish thrives on the same sense of volunteerism. From Church School menand woman who volunteer to teach our children, to the those who give thousandsof hours to make our festival successful; and from those who lovingly clean anddecorate our church, to youth group volunteers, our church is filled with peoplewho understand that everyone can offer the first two “T’s” in time, talent, andtreasure. For those who haven’t yet found a niche in which to serve, let me offer somesuggestions:·Opening and closing church and the FLC – We need to augment ourpaid staff with dependable, trustworthy, and available volunteers whocan open and close our facilities before and after services, events, meetings, etc.·Tuesday luncheon teams – Early next year the parish will begin servinga weekly luncheon to the public as a way to help balance our books. We’llneed a half-dozen teams of people to shop for, prepare and serve food, setup, take cash, clean-up, and help promote this new initiative.·Food for Fellowship luncheons – These luncheons are now in their10th year. The money raised helps meet parish needs. This fall the ParishCouncil has not only been preparing and serving the meals, but also underwriting the cost. We are looking for groups of people (organizations, families, etc.) to follow our example in 2013.·Carpet teams – We’ll need at least 3 more teams of 5 or 6 people tolay-down and pickup the carpet for auditorium events at the Family LifeCenter.Physical Facilities Family Life CenterNick Tharenos 314-576-7011George A. Thanks to all who contributed to date. More contributionsare still needed—please send checks directly to the church office, noting“security door donation.”The additional good news in this effort is that a few parishioners—George Glioumas and Mike Kamburis—have adopted this project, and areputting together a team to repair the doors at considerably lower cost thanexpected. They will renovate the doors and door frames, and reinforce thedoors with steel sheeting. Work will begin just after the holidays, and isexpected to be completed in early 2013 for just the cost of materials. Anyonewishing to volunteer time to work on George’s and Mike’s team should callone of these wonderful parishioners, or contact Peter Takes (314-862-2866;petertakes@sbcglobal.net).This wonderful effort reminds us of the many ways one can help St.Nicholas beyond standard stewardship—a donation of stewardship of service. If you have a talent or skill that can provide a valued task to St. Nicholas, please contact Peter Takes, or any member of the Parish Council to offeryour services. Whether a plumber, electrician, accountant, chef, partyplanner, teacher, etc., your stewardship of service benefits the St. Nicholasfamily, and often saves the parish money!
