Annual Report 2007:Fostering Global ConnectivityDirectors’ ColumnThrough the “Boldness by Design”initiative, Michigan State University, underthe leadership of President Lou Anna K .Simon and Provost Kim Wilcox, is workingto establish MSU as the global leader inour industry . MSU is advancing a strategiccommitment to become recognizedworldwide as the United States’ leadingland-grant research university for the 21stcentury by 2012 . For MSU’s InternationalBusiness Center, the key strategic imperativethat is a part of the university’s globalinitiative is “expanding international reachthrough academic, research and economicdevelopment initiatives and global, nationaland local strategic alliances .” At the sametime, IBC is also dedicated to MSU’s otherstrategic imperatives for maximum impact(i .e ., enhance the student experience;enrich community, economic, and familylife; increase research opportunities; andstrengthen stewardship) .Closely aligned with the university’sfive strategic imperatives, IBC and itsportfolio of projects represent the mostaggressive, far-reaching, and high-impactagenda that the center has ever proposedto undertake in its seventeen years ofexistence . Resourceful business schools suchas the Broad School, with its world-leadinginternational research faculty (ManagementInternational Review 2004) and influence inthe field of international business (Journalof International Business Studies 2005) canachieve significant accomplishments withinthe structure of the center’s programming .Such business school infrastructure coupledwith a truly global university makes us a veryeffective center .A number of important developmentshave taken place since our last annualreport . globalEDGE (http://globalEDGE .msu .edu/) went through a design overhauland has continued to rank as the world’s2leading online source for internationalbusiness information (based on rankings byYahoo! using the search term “internationalbusiness” as of December 31, 2007) . In May2007, we launched a brand new sectionon Industry Profiles which boasts “all-youneed-to-know” information on 20 economicsectors . We also continue to provide businessinformation on 199 countries, 31 categoriesof international global resources includingmore than 5,000 online resources, andnumerous other international topics tomaintain our world-leading position as “YourSource for Global Business Knowledge .”The diversity of audiences served by thecenter’s programming efforts is impressive .First, we have supported over 150international research projects this year, mostin an interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinaryeffort . Second, we worked with severalorganizations to start the India InformationTechnology Forum . The inaugural studentorganized event took place on March 16,2007, and planning for next year is in fullswing . Third, we were a key co-sponsor of theOctober 24, 2006, International Trade Forumtogether with, among others, the GreaterLansing United Nations Association . Fourth,we partnered with the Lansing RegionalChamber of Commerce to co-sponsor theInternational Business Forum held May 1,2007 .
