Our Self-Will Strengthened to Do God's WillI am surprised that you still have not completely renounced your self-will,but I rejoice exceedingly that this change will be accomplished during theretreat (Diary, 369).[Then] I heard these words: I am with you. During this retreat, I will strengthen you in peace and in courage so that your strength will not fail in carryingout My designs. Therefore, you will cancel out your will absolutely in thisretreat and, instead, My complete will shall be accomplished in you. Knowthat it will cost you much, so write these words on a clean sheet of paper:"From today on, my own will does not exist," and then cross out the page. And on the other side write these words: "From today on, I do the will ofGod everywhere, always, and in everything" (Diary, 372).My Prayer Response:Lord Jesus, may Your love strengthen me to do Your will everywhere, always, and in everything. May I live the "Our Father" petition: "Thy will be done!"Adult Education (RCIA)& LectorsChristine MichaelianThursday 6:30pm-8:00pmAdorationM-F 8:00am –12m in ChurchMo WallaceTWINONEMO@AOL.COM772-285-2688Servants of the Eucharist &Care of the SickKathleen SullivanAnnulmentsJohn GinnettiMen of Saint AndrewDave OlioMonday evening 6:30-8pmdavidolio333@gmail.comPrayer Shawl MinistryNorma Olio1st Wednesday of each month10:30 amPro-Life MinistryMichele WilliamsBible StudyTuesday 10:00amTuesday 6:30pmIgnatian SpiritualityPrayer GroupWeds. 8:30am-10:00am(Lenten Retreat Thurs. 8:30am)Disciples of PrayerCamille Lascari &Bob GreesonParish Websitesaintandrewcatholic.orgWebmaster;Michael BrennanCommunity OutreachAPOSTLES OFJOHN PAUL IIPlease call for anappointment772-291-0002Rosary Maker’s MinistryKathleen SullivanWednesday 10:00amUshersJane Engelbrechtejanybrainy@yahoo.comLegion of Mary Friday 8:15amPlease join us in praying the Chaplet on Mondays after the daily 7:30am Mass in room C and therest of the week in silence during Adoration in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Gathering HymnAll are Welcome1.Let us build a house where love can dwellAnd all can safely live,A place where saints and children tellHow hearts learn to forgive.Built of hopes and dreams and visions,Rock of faith and vault of grace; Here the love of Christ shall end divisions:All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome inthis place.2.Let us build a house where prophets speak,And words are strong and true,Where all God's children dare to seekTo dream God's reign anew. Here the cross shall stand as witnessAnd as symbol of God's grace; Here as one we claim the faith of Jesus:All are welcome.3.Let us build a house where love is foundIn water, wine and wheat:A banquet hall on holy ground,Where peace and justice meet. Here the love of God, through Jesus,Is revealed in time and space; As we share in Christ the feast that frees us:All are welcome.4.Let us build a house where hands will reachBeyond the wood and stoneTo heal and strengthen, serve and teach,And live the Word they've known. Here the outcast and the strangerBear the image of God's face;Let us bring an end to fear and danger:All are welcome.Text: Marty Haugen, b.1950, 1994, GIA Publications, Inc.FIRST READINGA reading from the Book of Kings1Kings 17:10-16In those days, Elijah the prophet went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the entrance of the city, a widow wasgathering sticks there; he called out to her, "Pleasebring me a small cupful of water to drink." She left toget it, and he called out after her, "Please bring along abit of bread." She answered, "As the LORD, your God,lives, I have nothing baked; there is only a handful offlour in my jar and a little oil in my jug. Just now I wascollecting a couple of sticks, to go in and preparesomething for myself and my son; when we have eatenit, we shall die." Elijah said to her, "Do not beafraid. Go and do as you propose. But first make me alittle cake and bring it to me. Then you can preparesomething for yourself and your son. For the LORD,the God of Israel, says, 'The jar of flour shall not goempty, nor the jug of oil run dry, until the day when theLORD sends rain upon the earth.'" She left and did asElijah had said. She was able to eat for a year, and heand her son as well; the jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, as the LORD had foretoldthrough Elijah.RESPONSORIAL PSALMPsalm 146:7,8-9,9-10R. (1b) Praise the Lord, my soul! The LORD keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free.R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those who were bowed down;the LORD loves the just. The LORD protects strangers.R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. The LORD shall reign forever;your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia.R. Praise the Lord, my soul!SECOND READINGA reading from the Letter to the HebrewsHebrews 9:24-28Christ did not enter into a sanctuary made by hands,a copy of the true one, but heaven itself, that he mightnow appear before God on our behalf. Not that he mightoffer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters eachyear into the sanctuary with blood that is not his own; ifthat were so, he would have had to suffer repeatedlyfrom the foundation of the world. But now once for all hehas appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin byhis sacrifice. Just as it is appointed that human beings dieonce, and after this the judgment, so also Christ, offeredonce to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sinbut to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.R. Alleluia, alleluia.Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.R. Alleluia, alleluia. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.819-4

GospelMark 12:38-44The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.A reading from the holy gospel according to MarkGlory to you, O Lord.In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds,"Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in longrobes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seatsof honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour thehouses of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthyprayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation."He sat down opposite the treasury and observed howthe crowd put money into the treasury. Many richpeople put in large sums. A poor widow also cameand put in two small coins worth a few cents.Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them,"Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in morethan all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surpluswealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed allshe had, her whole livelihood."The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.Rededication to the Cause of Life“In this Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities: ACampaign in Support of Life, we renew our callfor individual Catholics and the many institutions and organizations of the Church to unitein an unprecedented effort to restore respectand legal protection for every human life—tobe what the Holy Father asks us to be: a people of life and a people for life (The Gospel ofLife, no. 78). It is our hope and expectationthat in focusing on the need to respect andprotect the lives of the innocent unborn andthose who are disabled, ill, or dying, we willhelp to deepen respect for the life of every human being.” (US Bishops, 2001).Fr. Frannk PavoneAs Catholics it is ourprivilege and our duty topray for those who havegone before us that theymay be relieved in theirpurification as they enterthe presence of God.The best thing we can do for the dead is to have Massesoffered for them as this is the greatest of all prayers inwhich we offer to the Father the merits of His Son’sPassion and death.Eternal Father, Strong to SaveMELITAClosing Hymn1. Eternal Father, strong to save,Whose arm has bound the restless wave,Who bids the mighty ocean deepIts own appointed limits keep:O hear us when we raise our pleaFor those in peril on the sea.2. O Christ, the Lord of hill and plainO’er which our traffic runs amainBy mountain pass or valley low;Wherever, Lord, your loved ones go,Protect them by your guarding handFrom ev’ry peril on the land.3. O Spirit, whom the Father sentTo spread abroad the firmament;O Wind of heaven, by your mightSave all who dare the eagle’s flight,And keep them by your watchful careFrom ev’ry peril in the air.4. O Trinity of love and pow’r,Your children shield in danger’s hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe,Protect them wheresoe’er they go;And then shall rise with voices freeGlad praise from air and land and sea.Text: 88 88 88; Verses 1, 4, William Whiting, 1825–1878, alt.; Verses 2, 3,Robert N. Spencer, 1877–1961, alt. Music: John B. Dykes, 1823–1876.NOVEMBERThe month of November is devoted to the Holy Souls inPurgatory. We celebrate this Feast on November 2nd. Themonth of November falls under Ordinary Time, represented by the liturgical color green. The Church teaches us thatPurgatory is not eternal and its duration is pronouncedduring times of judgment. We are also taught to alwayspray for those who have gone into eternity. During thistime, we pray for those who may still receive the reconciliation of God’s goodness – that in his purification anddivine mercy, they may yearn to be spared for their sins.We pray for the defiled souls, as we know one who isdefiled may not enter into heaven. We ask as a show of ourcharity, as close to that of God’s, that they may rest inpeace through His light and loving mercy, which invites usto be grateful for our desire to go into heaven with Him.Additional prayers may be offered throughout themonth of November for personal devotion, and to helpstrengthen the relationship with God. These pr ayer sare helpful to connect with the time of year, and can beprayed anytime throughout the month. The LiturgicalCalendar guides us in prayer for Saints, and obligationdays within each liturgical season. These prayers can befound in the categories, Saints, and Liturgical Season.819-5

Weekend Marriage BuildersForgiveness’s First StepThe SanctuaryCandles are forthe intention ofRobert & Ellen WilhelmThe Candles at the Shrine of OurLady of Perpetual Help are for theintention ofDominic DiFedeThe most effective and sometimes the most necessary firststep in forgiving a spouse is to get on your knees and letGod’s forgiveness of you seep into your feelings-not intoyour intellect, but into the deepest recesses of youremotions. You may have to get alone by yourself and giveyourself time –maybe several weekends-in which you donothing but wait for God to get through to your deepestfeelings. It’s when you become overcome with gratitude forbeing forgiven for your own contributions to whateverwent wrong– even if you don’t know what thosecontributions are-that the power of resentment and ragegradually erodes, and it becomes much easier to forgive. Kathleen Sullivan taught our 7th grade CCDClass how to make a Rosary and DeaconMatt Bartlett blessed their Rosaries.Parents: Thank you for your faithfulnessto the promise you made to God, His Church and yourchildren to teach them the practice of the Catholic faithwhich instills in them love of God and of those aroundyou. It is an important obligation for your part, to providefor your child’s faith education while they remain in yourcare; you are and remain the primary educator of yourchildren and as such it is part of the responsibilities Godgave you when He gave you the gift of your child.Supporting you in your vocation as parent is a mission,St. Andrew takes very seriously. Is Frequent Confession Necessary?Church law requires us to confess serioussins at least once a year. Many Catholicsfind this difficult, so we should investigatethe reasons for this precept. The Catechismof the Catholic Church observes that“setting things right” with God establishesthe foundation on which we properly buildor rebuild relations with one another (seeNos. 1455-1458). Admitting guilt is a way oflooking at ourselves the way God does. This is not an invitation to self-punishment,but is a way of recognizing God’s mercy tous, and of encouraging us to show thesame mercy to others.Such reconciliation insures our readinessfor the Eucharist (see Catechism, No. 2042)and also equips us to proclaim the Gospel.“In order that the message of salvation canshow the power of its truth and radiancebefore men, it must be authenticated by thewitness of the life of Christians” (No. 2044).Why hesitate to avail ourselves of sacramental confession? Fear? If so, we mightapproach the priest outside the confessional and explain our reluctance. He will surelybe compassionate. We must remember theloving Christ who longs to welcome us. St.Augustine wrote: “Whoever confesses sins is already working with God. Destroy what you have made, so that Godmay save what he has made.”FATHER REGINALD MARTIN819-9
