Young native Englishspeakers have an English vocabulary ranging from 5,000 to 7,000words by the time they enter kindergarten. Closing this vocabulary gapcan be a daunting task for young English learners and their teachers. And for recent arrivals in high school, who are expected to have avocabulary of 50,000 English words to excel in the classroom, the taskcan appear all but impossible. (Center for American Progress, 2008)10

1/29/2015ELL Summer School Our English Language Learners may lose all access to fluentEnglish modeling and speaking opportunities over thesummer months resulting in loss of recently acquiredlanguage skills. ELLs benefit from book reading, writing, and differentiatedlearning opportunities offered by summer learning programs. They also benefit from the social support that is critical totheir academic success.
