BG NEWSNovember 10, 2021 PAGE 2Vaccine exemptions No More ACTs or SATsAdmissions’ optional test score policy continuesDawn Violet Todd ReporterAs BGSU continues to prepare for itsCOVID-19 vaccine mandate to come intoeffect, one key aspect of the policy is that ofvaccine exemptions. As of Nov. 3, 2207 individuals had appliedfor exemption to the spring semester’svaccine requirement. This makes up roughly10% of BGSU’s total 22,000 students, faculty and staff. Of the requests, 1769have currently been approved, with noinformation on how many have been deniedor are still pending.Among those applying for exemptionwere 37 faculty members. Unvaccinatedclass instructors will still be conductingtheir classes in person, with contingencyplans in place should contact tracing andquarantining need to occur. While the deadline to file a request wasannounced as being Nov. 1, BGSU ChiefHealth Officer Ben Batey said they are stillaccepting new requests from students whomay have missed the deadline, or studentswho are enrolling in the spring semester.Batey said some requests requireadditional information from students whomay have not provided enough details intheir initial form.“An example would be sometimes peoplehave filed for religious exemption, but theydidn’t really give us any information abouttheir personal religion,” he said.Batey also told WBGU’s “The MorningShow” that about half of the requests didcite religious reasons, with the remaindermostly noting either personal conscience ormedical reasons. The university’s announced policycurrently only affects students attending inthe spring semester of 2022. Requirementsfor future semesters currently remainunclear.Batey said there has been no decisionmade regarding the fall semester of 2022 yet.If an individual has their request denied, they will work with the Division of Healthand Wellness to figure out what they need todo, including the possibility of having thoseindividuals take their c lasses remotely.On-campus housing is expected to followpolicies similar to those currently in place, with no separation between vaccinated andunvaccinated students. It is not currentlyknown if unvaccinated students deniedexemption will see a change in their accessto on-campus housing. nGoodwillScan the QR Codeto watch theBG24 Newscast.Dawn Violet Todd ReporterBGSU’s Office of Admissions has chosen toextend a policy that no longer requires newstudents to submit an ACT or SAT scoreto be admitted. This means that studentsapplying to attend in the fall semester of2022 may choose not to provide a scorefrom their standardized tests. The policy began during the fall semester2020, as COVID-19 prevented many highschool students from being able to takeeither exam.Students may still submit a score if theychoose, and may find certain benefits. One benefit listed by Admissions ismathematics placement, which may help astudent begin their math courses in a moresuitable place. While independent scholarships mayrequire a test score, BGSU’s academicscholarships can be awarded to studentswho applied through test-optional.It is recommended that students have a3.0 GPA or higher to be eligible for theseacademic scholarships, and new studentshave until Jan. 15 to apply.Of those that do submit scores,Admissions currently reports that theaverage ACT score of applicants rangesfrom 20 to 25, and SAT scores from1020 to 1190.BGSU is one of many schools thatengages in superscoring, where astudent’s overall test score is aggregatedfrom their best section scores acrossmultiple attempts of the exam, to thebenefit of the student.BGSU’s test-optional policy isnot unique in Ohio, as many majorpublic universities in the state haveindependently waived their ACT/SATrequirement during the pandemic. While the policy will go into its thirdyear, the Office of Admissions has statedthat it is not an indefinite policy, and thatit will be re-evaluated for future years. nScan this QR Codeto learn more aboutthis new policy.USGunanimouslysupportsHB371Monday - SaturdayNia Lambdin ReporterMonday - Saturday10 A.M. to 8 P.M.Sunday10 A.M. to 6 P.M.The Undergraduate StudentGovernment unanimously passedSenate Resolution 06 to have BGSUcreate accessible and affordablebreast cancer screenings for students.S.R. 06 is titled “A ResolutionFormally Supporting Ohio House Bill371 and Advocating for Accessibleand Affordable Breast CancerScreenings.”HB 371 supports more costefficient and advanced screeningoptions for Ohio citizens.USG is calling for BGSU to“advocate and support those battlingbreast cancer by making resourceslike early detection mammogramsavailable to students on campusand creating programs on campus9am - 9pmSunday10am-6pm1058 N. BG NEWSNovember 10, 2021 PAGE 3AD V I C E ONCaring for your carin the winterWITH COD Y D IETR IC HAs winter approaches, the snow, sleet, ice and other inclementweather predicaments follow. Tireman General Service TechnicianCody Dietrich explains why it is important to prepare your car forthese winter months. Dietrich is 21 years old and has been working in thefield for about two years. He has worked at Tireman for 10 months.Megan Finke Managing EditorWhy is winter car care important?Your car is more vulnerable to the cold. Likefor instance your battery, cold temperature cancause the battery to not work properly; youwon’t be able to start your car.Why is it important to check tire treadand have your tires rotated? You want to get your tires rotated probablyevery 5,000 miles you put on your car becausethey wear differently from the front to the back. It’s measured in 32nds of an inch and you haveeight 32nds in the front and seven in the rear soit’s probably a rear-wheel drive, so you want torotate them to even them out. What should you keep in your trunkfor winter?Definitely keep a blanket or a coat. There arewinter packs you can get from the store too;they’ve got, I believe flashlights, they probablyhave a blanket and something possibly foryour tires. Are there any myths you can dispelabout cars in the winter?I was actually just reading about that (pouringboiling water on a car to melt ice) today. If youput that on your car to melt the ice it couldpotentially break the windows, possibly crackyour windshield. Why is it important to have good tiretread for the winter?Well, there are actually specific snow tires youcan get, so those are just designed for bettertraction in the snow, or the ice as well. But youcan also get all-season tires, which would workwell in all conditions. What kind of issues can arise if youdon’t prepare your car for winter? The worst-case scenario is, you could get stuckin the middle of a snowstorm on the side of theroad, and the simplest thing is probably justsliding around on the road if you don’t havegood enough tires. What do you do?My position is more doing fluid top-off and oilchanges and stuff like that.Emergency Winter Car Kit“Really, just before all the snow hits, just take it in for an inspectionand get everything checked over.Get your tires checked over and getyour oil changed,”Cody Dietrich Tireman General Service Technician

It’s not often yousee self-help books that are cursingon the cover. I’m not a fan of self-helpbooks, however, the title intriguedme. I picked up the book and readthe line that made me buy it. It was,“[.] this is not a traditional self-helpbook. It’s more of a let-me-help-youhelp-yourself-help book.” I was sold. The author comes off as charmingand realistic, while still being able tohelp you help yourself. The Rockets (4-5) have beenreeling lately, losing three out oftheir last four games including aheartbreaking 52-49 loss at EasternMichigan last Tuesday, Nov. 2.This will be the 87th meetingin the series history, with Toledoholding the slimmest of edges witha 41-40-4 series record over theFalcons, who have the opportunityto re-tie the series with a victory.Toledo has dominated the rivalrysince 2010, as they have won tenout of the last eleven meetings, andtrounced the Falcons in the GlassBowl last year by a score of 38-3.Bowling Green hopes to stay alivefor bowl eligibility, as they sit at 3-6and need a minimum of six winsto qualify for a bowl game. Gettingthere would mean a win over Toledo,a win at Miami on Nov. 16 and awin over Ohio at home on Nov. 26.The Falcons sit at the bottom of theMAC as well at 1-4 overall, but thewin over Buffalo was a step in theright direction, as it was their firstconference win since 2019.NumbersBY THEAfter over 100 years of rivalry, BGSUtakes on the University of Toledotonight, at 7pm to carry on the Battleof I-75 tradition at the Doyt. PHOTO BYBGSU ATHLETICS2011The Battle of I-75 trophywas made and replacedthe Peace PipeTrophy afterit was retiredin 2010.As for Toledo, this season hasbeen fairly disappointing as JasonCandle’s squad was expected to winthe Mid-American Conference’sWest Division, but sit at just 4-5 (2-3MAC). They need to win two moregames to get to a bowl game, but itshouldn’t be too tough of a task asthey travel to Bowling Green beforeheading to Athens to take on Ohio,on Nov. 16, and then host Akron Nov.27, to cap off the year. All three ofthose squads have a combined sevenwins on the year.Bowling Green’s offense, whichhad been fairly stagnant all year, turned the page against Buffalo andscored 56 points, and Falcon fanshope that is signs of things to come.Falcon quarterback Matt McDonaldthrew for 263 yards and scored fivetotal touchdowns against Buffalo. On the year McDonald sits at over2000 yards and a 10-7 touchdown tointerception ratio. When going to theair, Austin Osborne (48 receptions,393 yards, one touchdown), ChristianSims (34-367-2) and Tyrone Broden(31-543-5) have represented solidtargets. Broden in particular was ahuge part of the win over Buffalohauling in passes for over 100 yardsand two scores. Expect the Falcons tothrow early and often against a solidRocket defense.40-41-4Toledo narrowly leadsthe Battle of I-75rivalry.20midistancebetweenBG and UT campuses.Toledo might have a losingrecord, but they have had one ofthe better offenses in the country.Carter Bradley began the year as thequarterback, and while he wasn’tbad by any stretch, the Rocketsswitched over to DeQuan Finn inOct. and he has been a good dualthreat quarterback for Toledo (1200yards passing, 8-1 touchdown tointerception ratio, 348 yards rushing, six touchdowns). Bryant Koback isprobably the Rockets biggest weaponas the running back has racked upover 800 yards and the ground andalmost 250 yards receiving with ninetotal touchdowns. Devin Maddoxis the go-to guy for Finn, as he hashauled in 31 passes for 478 yards andthree touchdowns. The Falcons defense startedoff very strong, including a greatperformance against Minnesota, butthey have been back on their heelslately. They rank 103rd in the countryin scoring defense and 87th inyards per play. They also have beenbrutally bad on third down (100th inthe country) and red zone defense(115th in the country).
