This column will be about Facebook, the onlinesocial networking service that is a conveyor belt forskewed political agendas and the inane babblings of social misfits who range from lonely old dreamers to jackoff idiots looking for action.Facebook has turned into the devil’s tool, friends and neighbors, and if there is one thing thatreaders of this column may hold dear to their hearts andcherish in their dreams, it is my solemn promise thatnone of the following in its entirety will ever appear onFacebook.I know better than to broach it, what with mypost on Obama and the Tick Tock Kid already being relegated to the Facebook shit can. And my continued participation on Mark Zuckerberg’s 104-billion-dollar toymay be closing in on the finish line, although absolutelyno one in the entire world may give a rat’s ass whetherI’m on Facebook or not.Kinky Friedman called computers in their rawform little more than devil tools, and my Christian upbringing and Proverbs in the Bible is dead on when itsays “idle hands are the devil’s workshop.”When Zuckerberg and some of his Harvardclassmates founded Facebook just 11 years ago, anumber of us ignorant suckers were doing just fine without hearing from new “friends” who drop in from deserts, jungles, and frickin floating islands of ice.Ignorant and without a social media clue whenI registered my public Facebook page just a couple ofyears ago, I started out haphazardly accepting “friend”requests from the Congo to the North Pole, and I wouldlikely have a friend or two from Bumfuck, Egypt exceptfor the fact that Egypt and nine other countries havebanned Facebook. I’m not sure that Egypt actually hasa town called “Bumfuck,” but if there isn’t one there sureought to be.You won’t get friended from Egypt, NorthKorea, China, Iran, Cuba, Bangladesh, Syria, Mauritius,Pakistan, and Vietnam. But that leaves the rest of the world, and I wasnot ready for the onslaught.“Hello, there. You new friend. Me, Yi Yee. I liveSumprubum, Myanmar. How you do?”I have since learned to weed out such friend re 4 Action Magazine, January 2016quests. I doubt that Yi Yee of Sumprubum, Myanmar andI will ever have much to talk about, and the probabilityof Mr. (or was is Ms.) Yee of Sumpbrubum ever wantingto buy advertising in Action Magazine is less than remote.Facebook has been corrupted into a datingservice, a lovelorn commiseration society for never-wasand never-will-bes, and an online billboard where members of Alcoholics Anonymous feel free to violate theanonymity clause in their revered traditions withoutreprisal or even condemnation from within their own fellowship. The 11th tradition in the Big Book of AlcoholicsAnonymous clearly states: Our public relations policy isbased on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.Oldtimers in A.A. have to fight back the urge toregurgitate every time one of the relatively newer members talks A.A. business or flashes a picture of his orher “sobriety chip” on Facebook. The “sobriety chip” is an annual medallion certifying an AA member’s length of sobriety in years, andpublic display of such a private and spiritual reminderon the world wide web is a traditions insult that seemsto be growing in popularity. If the internet isn’t classifiedas a public media outlet paralleling press, radio and film, then it’s time for an update from AA’s headquarters inNew York.Facebook’s avowed purpose is to be “a socialnetworking website that makes it easy for you to connect and share with your family and friends online.”My wife Sharon is a Facebook subscriber whouses the service in an upbeat, happy-happy, joy-to-theworld, andrelatively innocent and innocuous manner. She postsphotos of her two dogs, cat, adopted pet buck deer, herson and grandson, and friends who don elf suits forthe annual Elf Louise Christmas charity. Then, whambo! Enter the new Facebook invader she inadvertently “friended” while picking throughthe requests column. This creepy slimeball (who giveshis name and lists his age at 33) is carrying a mentaldisillusion that is unmistakable. He is one of thosecretins who live under rocks and venture out when leastexpected.Forget that Sharon’s FB profile lists her as married (complete with family photos). And bear in mind thatthe scariest aspect surrounding this Facebook molesteris the flowery and almost surreal quality of his words. He doesn’t come on snorting and farting andpawing the air like vacuum-packed testosterone or oneof Steinbeck’s wild and untamed stallions. To the contrary, this asshole oozes forth with platitudes and syrupywords of endearment that are enough to scare the livingshit out of most any normal woman. Here is just a small sampling from the voluminous bag of printed garbage he dumped on the wife:I was caught by the web of your beauty as I wasdrawn to your profile. I felt goosebumps and butterfliesover me because you are irresistible. I want to take careof you.And on and on and on and on it went.Needless to say, this dildo didn’t offer to takecare of me, and my smiling face is prominently displayed on my wife’s Facebook page.People who are more knowledgeable than uson the pitfalls and pratfalls connected with Facebookfreaks have offered us some good advice.Never respond in any way to one of theseposts. Sharon made the mistake of telling this jerk to getlost and leave her alone. That’s when he responded withthe “goosebumps” and “butterflies” bit.Always hit block and defriend when a post likethis is received. And to avoid the mistake of approvingfriend requests from these birds, watch for the warningsigns. If the request includes no profile information, nophotograph, and no list of mutual friends, the safest policy is to delete this friend request. At this writing, my Facebook timeline lists wellover 3,500 “friends.” But most of the stuff I see on a dailybasis comes from a comparative handful of users, YiYee of Myanmar defriended and excluded. The jury is still out, but I am seriously wondering if Facebook is worth the time it consumes.

Blues godfatherIf anyone doubts thatJimmy Spacek is indeedthe godfather of blues inSan Antonio, those reservations will be finally andforeverdispelledbySpacek’s blockbuster newcd titled Peace and Distortion.Jimmy SpacekJimmy has been Action’s blues guitar favoritesince we first encounteredhim almost 40 years agoon San Antonio’s SouthSide, and Spacek’s humility and willingness toshare his talent with others has long had him onthe top of our list.Hear and see it allwhen Spacek introduceshis new work with a cd release party January 31 atSam’s Burger Joint wherehe will be joined by TheWest Side Horns, RubenV, Catherine Denise, andno telling who else.Spacek has poured hisenergy and his soul intothe current 10-song project, and we say ditto andamen to Spacek camppromo material whichstates:The long awaited release solidifies Spacek’sreputation as the Godfather of San Antonio blues. His guitar playing weavesblues, rock, and soul together with an explosiveTexas punch. On the new record,Jimmy brings his poignantstory-telling expertise intosharp focus with tunes likeBroken Man and Peacemaker.Broken Man is about amilitary vet who finds himself homeless on thestreet, while Peacemakerechos the never-endingquest for peace.Theprojectwasrecorded by Donnie Mealsat San Antonio’s Edit PointStudio. Kelly Donnellymixed it at Studio Plush inAustin. In typical Spacek fashion, the blues ace couldn’theap enough praise onthe tech people.“It’s always such a coolexperience working withDonnie,” Spacek said. “Hemakes us feel so at home, and he brings out the bestplaying from everyone. And Kelly is one of thebest anywhere in regardto guitar tone. He finds thesweet spot in every instrument for that final mix.”Goodbye LeroyGrieving family andfriends all over SouthTexas said a sad farewelllast month to LeroyRichter, founder of thepopular Antler Restaurantin Spring Branch.Leroy RichterHeart failure took Leroyat age 71, and that wastoo damn soon for thoseof us who have trouble understanding such losses.Leroy’s son and partnerin the booming countryfood restaurant, LeeRichter, will keep theeatery humming as always, but Leroy’s deathleaves a void that willnever be filled.Action Magazine hasbeen the only publicationdistributed in the AntlerRestaurant for years, withover 300 copies going outof the rack every month.“That’s how we havewanted it,” Leroy said. “Wehave always gotten a kickout of the publication.”Leroy was a hunter, afisherman, a storyteller, and one of the really goodguys who walk the face ofthis earth.R.I.P. We all love Kate, andour dream is to restoreSpecht’s to the greatrestaurant and saloon itwas in the 1980s when Ifirst fell in love with theplace.”The on-premises management team Gruendlerrefers to as “we” includeschildhood friends ScottHowen and Bruce Bucklin, both veterans of therestaurant and saloon industry. For the past 15 years,Howen has been bartending and managing restaurants in Denver, Colorado, while Bucklin, who lives inBlanco County, has beenwith the Bulverde Starbucks for the past 10years. Bucklin’s San Antonio restaurant and saloonexperience is extensive, including a bartending jobat the Old San FranciscoSteak House.Gruendler also notesthat his companion MariaDavis is in charge of accounting, financing work, and other dollars andcents chores too numerous to list.“We couldn’t pull thisoff without Maria,” Gruendler said. “Her importance is huge.”Thurman Love operated Specht’s as a straightbarbecue place for almosttwo years before bailingout when he was unableto gain financing to buythe place. The property is in needof work before a projectedopening in mid-March,and Gruendler said hehas ordered all newkitchen equipment as astart.“We will replace thekitchen, and then addressother needs, includingrestroom facilities,” Gruendler said. “I intend tokeep the menu much likeKate had it. Maria and Iwon’t be on the premises, but Scott Howen andBruce Bucklin will be offering the same good country fare Kate had--friedcatfish, chicken friedsteaks, great burgers, andbeer and wine. And ScottHowen will be adding aline of draft craft beers thatwill be something new.”Howen will live with hisdog Miles Davis in thesmall house adjacent tothe restaurant and saloon,a onetime post office andtelephone relay stationwhich still contains old1930s circa mail boxesand phone equipment.Gruendler also plans toresume live music atSpecht’s, although hesays other needs must bemet before his crew startsactually contacting themusicians.“And I also have longrange plans for the old cotton gin on the property,”Gruendler said. “The cotton gin will be part ofphase two.”Gruendler has high expectations for a flood ofearly business, result of aFacebook announcementwhich he says garneredan avalanche of encouraging comments.“I first thought we mighthave a soft opening,” Gruendler said. “Just open thedoors and slowly startdoing business. Hellercontinued from page 7with Ozzie Osbourne,Black Oak Arkansas, andothers.Amy Heller’s official bioreads:Often described as energetic and passionatesince an early age, Amyhas been vocalizing herlove of music to the world. From the stage of MickeyGilley’s in Pasadena, atage 16, Amy started hermusical career and soonwas venturing into jazz, then navigating on intoblues, pop music, andR&B.
