nnectorthodox young adult conference

welcomeWe are so excited to welcome you to the third annualConnect Orthodox Young Adult Conference! As we prepare for a weekend of discussion and devotion, considerthis – throughout the New Testament, Christ uses paradoxes to explainimportant points. “He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for mysake will find it.” “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” “So the last will be first, and the first last.” “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he whohumbles himself will be exalted.” “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect inweakness.”Being faithful Orthodox Christians means living in the tension betweenknowing and not knowing. Our minds want the details of a mystery thatonly our hearts can experience. We are called to live out Christ’s words ina way that calls out to others who are struggling. The Mystery of Faithfulness is an invitation to us all. As we discuss thatmystery this weekend, we pray you keep an open mind and heart, allowingGod to move you to new areas of understanding and appreciation. We are so thankful you’re here.Humbly,The 2019 Connect Committee

breakout speakersDR. PATRICIA BOUTENEFFBreakout Topic: “Happy Paradoxes Within OrthodoxLay Leadership: In the Parish and Beyond”Sometimes it seems that if you want to be a leader—or at leasthave a significant chance of making a difference with the Orthodoxchurch—you have to be ordained. Nothing could be further from thetruth either within your parish, your diocese, or your jurisdiction. In this workshop, we’ll look at what paths a wide variety of peoplehave forged and how you can follow in their footsteps.DR. PETER BOUTENEFFBreakout Topic: “The Lightness andJoy of the Repentant Sinner”This session will explore the paradoxes of the Church’spenitential language. While we might expect it to bringus down and make us miserable, my identity as “asinner” before a loving God can help me become a wholeand integrated person, full of compassion for others.FR. ANDREW DAMICKBreakout Topic: “Faithful Hearts, FrowardTongues: Portraits from the Tolkien Legendarium”In the works of master story-teller J. R. R. Tolkien, apersistent theme of judging not by appearance but by theheart is frequently revisited. Fr. Andrew Stephen Damickexplores some examples from these works and will lead adiscussion in how this dynamic may be attended to in ourpersonal relationships and spiritual lives.

MELISSA ELIZABETH NAASKOBreakout Topic: “Taking Your Spiritual Medicine”It is a rite of adulthood to make sure that you are prepared forthe trials of life. This extends into our spiritual lives as well.It is no longer your parents’, grandparents’ or godparents’responsibility to create a “shoebox” that you keep yourmedicines and tools in. It is yours now. As young adults, youneed to check your spiritual medicine shoeboxes and makesure that they are stocked up before you need them. If youwait until you are already in trouble, it is a lot harder to get thehelp and medicine you need. So what kinds of things do youneed to store in your spiritual medicine shoebox? There is thetime-honored list of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving but I amgoing to add to that list. You also need weekly Liturgy, regularConfession, and regular Fasting. In this talk, we will explorehow these things add to your spiritual health. FR. GREGORY GEORGIOUBreakout Topic: “Fools, folly, andfoolishness: The paradoxical nature ofOrthodox Christian living”St. Paul, a learned and astute Christian, stated, “ Ifanyone among you seems to be wise in this age, lethim become a fool that he may become wise. For thewisdom of this world is foolishness with God” (1 Cor.3:18-19). In this session, we will explore the relationshipsthat we have with Christ, others, and ourselves in orderto distinguish folly from wisdom. Specifically, we willinvestigate how faithfulness to our Orthodox Christianitymay lead us to think and act in a paradoxical mannerfrom the world if we want to experience the peace, joy,and meaning that are possible in this life. Be preparedwith questions because we will be challenged to examineourselves and evaluate whether our thoughts and practicesare truly wisdom or folly.
