We Care Because We PrayApril 03, 20162nd Week of Easterwww.ssaparish.comTheForbes Park, MakatiSacred Heart of Jesusand Divine Mercyby Jayme BlancoThe Sacred Heart of Jesus can be traced back in the12th century but it was only through Saint Margaret MaryAlacoque in 1673 that Jesus appeared and told her “thatthe love of His Heart must spread and manifest itself tomen.” With the help of her confessor Saint Claude LaColombiere, the devotion to the Sacred Heart spread inFrance and eventually throughout the world. The saiddevotion was officially recognized and approved byPope Clement XIII in 1765.On the other hand, the devotion to the Divine Mercy waspromulgated by Saint Faustina Kowalska in the 1930’sin Poland with which we are more familiar with the daily3 o’clock prayer habit. Our Lord appeared to SaintFaustina to give her the message of mercy that “Godloves us — all of us — no matter how great our sins.He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater thanour sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receiveHis mercy, and let it flow through us to others” (EWTN).Pope John Paul II had actively promoted the message ofSaint Faustina and when he canonized her in the Jubileeyear 2000, he likewise proclaimed that Divine Mercy willbe celebrated every second Sunday of Easter. In contrast, both the messages of the Sacred Heart ofJesus and Divine Mercy share one common theme God’s call to us for repentance. As we celebrate todayDivine Mercy Sunday, we recall that our Holy FatherPope Francis has declared 2016 a special JubileeYear of Mercy and Compassion in which everyone isencouraged to do both corporal and spiritual works ofmercy. The parish is inviting all men to join the Men of the SacredHeart. Parish BulletinApril 03, 2016Gratitudefor MercyOnDivineMercyby Javier Gomezby Javier GomezIs there still mercy in Easter? We think of Easter as a time ofrejoicing. We cast away the sullen looks and turn now to thejoy of the resurrection. Jesus rose from the dead, and theworld now rejoices. Mercy often gets left behind in Lent. Withthe cross comes mercy, and once Jesus rises from the dead, sometimes we stop thinking about mercy and move on.But Easter is the embodiment of mercy. One of the first thingsJesus does when he appears to his disciples is he givesthem the Holy Spirit and then says to them “If you forgive thesins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins ofany, they are retained.” (John 20:23).The forgiveness of sins - the distribution of God’s mercycan only happen after the resurrection. Certainly on thecross, Jesus displayed God’s mercy for all, but without theresurrection, it remains on display - forever enclosed butnever released.Easter allows God’s mercy to break forth. Just as Jesusbroke forth from the tomb, so the mercy of God breaksforth into the world and each of our lives. It is the gift of theresurrection.2Easter is not an afterthought to the passion but thecompletion of it. If Jesus did not rise, then nothing has beenaccomplished. St. Paul says “if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain, and your faith hasbeen in vain” (1 Cor 15:14).Thus, Lent leads to Easter, and mercy leads to grace.Indeed, God has shown his great mercy through the death ofhis son Jesus, but it is through the resurrection that creationis restored and that mercy becomes a factor in our lives. Andso the resurrection leads us to gratitude. The gratitude thatwe have received so much mercy from God in our lives, inso many different ways.If we focus on just the passion, we are at risk of wallowingin guilt. For we have done many terrible things. But theresurrection shifts from guilt to gratitude - from self-loathingto thanksgiving. We are always thankful that God shows us his great mercy yesterday, today and always.Sister Faustina invites all to approachthe throne of mercy. It is like a greatfountain that continuously overflowsand is available to all, but few dare toapproach because they are afraid orfeel undeserving. The Divine Mercy ofGod desires that everyone to partakeThe message is simple. It is that God of its abundance.loves us so much and that no sin isgreater than His love. This love is the Therefore, Sister Faustina exhorts toDivine Mercy of God. This love is what trust in Jesus. At the start of the YearSister Faustina wanted to make known of Mercy, Pope Francis reminds thatJesus is the ‘face of mercy.’ Everythingto the world.Jesus did was to reveal the mercy ofOften, we tend to fear God as a judge the father. The common phrase thatwho will condemn us for the wrong things the Divine Mercy devotion repeats arewe do. Or we have a deep sense of “Jesus, I trust in you.” It is Jesus whounworthiness when approaching God. manifests God’s mercy in the world. The Divine Mercy focuses on God, who isalways ready to forgive every sinner. No As we celebrate divine mercy Sunday, sin is greater than the love of God.may we recognise that God’s loveis always greater than our sins. AndBut it is important to ask for this may this lead us to approach himmercy. God cannot let his mercy flow always especially in the sacrament ofout if we do not ask for it. And so confession. In the 1930s, there was a young Polishnun named Sister Faustina Kowalska. She kept a diary where she wrote abouther experiences of God and her thoughtson those experiences. In her entries, shefocused a lot on the mercy of God.Santuario de San Antonio Pastoral TeamFr. Baltazar A. Obico, OFM, Guardian, Parochial VicarFr. Reu Jose C.
