This Handbook is a guide throughthe policies and procedures that underpin your postgraduate studiesand contains information about all the different types of support thatare available to you. We hope it will be helpful and welcome ideas andfeedback on what you would like included in it in the future. We haveaimed to provide general information that is relevant across theCanterbury, Brussels, Medway and Paris campuses; your own Schoolwill also provide additional information that is relevant to yourparticular postgraduate programme.Studying for a postgraduate degree will improve your detailedknowledge of your academic subject and it may also providepreparation for a professional career. Our Global Skills AwardProgramme offers you a unique and additional skills trainingopportunity which is designed to enhance global awareness andimprove your employability in a competitive job market while youstudy for your postgraduate qualification (please see section 24.1for further details).Kent provides a range of other activities to enhance yourpostgraduate development including an invitation to apply for thePostgraduate Experience Awards, participation in the PostgraduateResearch Festival and contribution to the production of theGradPost. You should also embrace the opportunities offered toyou by the dynamic intellectual life of the University. Every schoolholds research seminars each week and these are open to allacross the University, regardless of their discipline. There are alsomany ‘Open Lectures’ at Faculty and University level which featureleading academics and public figures. 4www.kent.ac.uk/graduateschoolSECTION 2: POSTGRADUATESTUDY AT KENT9 Kent Graduate School9.1 OverviewThe mission of the Kent Graduate School is to leadand champion the strategic development ofprovision for graduate education and research at theUniversity of Kent. The Graduate School is located ina central location on the Canterbury campus, withoffices for its staff members. It has a common roomdedicated for postgraduate use (Cornwallis SouthEast, floor 1, room 6) which is open until 6.00pm onweekdays.The Graduate School works in partnership withacademic schools, faculties, central servicedepartments and Kent Union to enhance the qualityof the postgraduate student experience across allcampuses and create a vibrant postgraduatecommunity at Kent. We aim to ensure that theacademic and social interests of postgraduatestudents, both taught and research, areappropriately provided for within the University bydeveloping: Dedicated postgraduate es.html A supportive environment for the intellectualinterests of our postgraduates Student-led initiatives such as social events,conferences and workshops The Global Skills Award Programme and otherpostgraduate training opportunities A strong framework of specialist support for ourpostgraduates across the University Internationally distinctive, exciting and innovativeprogrammes of study that combine academicexcellence with an exceptional student experienceand appropriate learning resources Further funding and study opportunities throughcultivation of external links with ResearchCouncils, graduate schools and otherorganisations both nationally and internationallyProfessor Diane Houston (Dean of the GraduateSchool) works closely with Dermot O’Brien, Master ofWoolf College (Postgraduate College) and thePresident of the Kent Graduate Student Associationto ensure a cohesive approach to the provision ofsupport and activities for postgraduates at Kent.9.2 Championing your interestsProfessor Diane Houston chairs a board that isresponsible for all aspects of postgraduateeducation at Kent. It includes student members asrepresentatives of the postgraduate community. TheGraduate School works to ensure that student viewson all aspects of the study experience are listened toand acted upon within the institution. Please keepan eye on the Graduate School events calendar forfurther information l9.4 The GradPostThere is a quarterly postgraduate newsletter (TheGradPost) which is supported by the GraduateSchool. Postgraduate students can join TheGradPost editorial team and/or contribute articles forpublication in the newsletter. Further informationabout The GradPost is available lPlease email gradpost@kent.ac.uk if you would liketo become involved with the newsletter.9.5 Postgraduate Experience AwardsPostgraduate students have the opportunity to bid forfunding up to 1,500 to coordinate their own eventsand projects aimed at enhancing the postgraduateexperience at Kent. Proposals for funding arerequired to have an interdisciplinary and/or externalfocus. Projects funded previously have included across-disciplinary Latin American Society andResearch Network, an interdisciplinary conferenceon Social Movement, and a short story readinggroup. Postgraduate students will be notified whenthe awards are open for applications during thecourse of the academic year.9.6 Postgraduate Research FestivalThis annual event is open to all postgraduatestudents, taught and research. The festival, whichnormally takes place in June, provides our studentswith the opportunity to present their work to a wideraudience, network with their peers from across theUniversity and attend academic talks. Postgraduates’work is showcased in poster format and theGraduate School offers sessions on producing aneffective research poster. Details of these sessionscan be found in the online booking system(bloom.kent.ac.uk). www.kent.ac.uk/graduateschool9.7 Global Skills Award ProgrammeThe Global Skills Award Programme is designed tobroaden your understanding of global issues andcurrent affairs as well as to develop personal skillswhich will enhance your employability. The six-monthprogramme runs from October to April. All studentsregistered for a taught Master’s Degree are eligible toapply for a place, which is free of charge and opento students based at Canterbury, Medway, Brusselsand Paris. Please see section 24.1 for furtherinformation. They will be ableto help with administrative matters regarding yourregistration and should be your first point of contactshould you have any queries or problems relating toyour studies.9.8 Other skills training10.2 Post12.2 Programme convenorPostgraduate students who are not taking part in theGlobal Skills Award Programme are still encouragedto attend a range of other skills workshops availableto them free of charge through the Graduate School.Topics include negotiation, leadership, team workingand presentation skills, all of which will aid you inyour future studies or job search. In order to bookonto these workshops, you will need to register withthe Graduate School’s online booking system whichcan be accessed at: https://bloom.kent.ac.uk orcontact Carla Doolan Postgraduate DevelopmentCoordinator (maternity cover) at skills@kent.ac.uk.You must ensure that the University has your currentlocal address and your home address. Heor she is also the person you consult about anyqueries or problems relating to your work or generalcircumstances.10 Communication within theUniversityThe General Regulations set out the University’spolicies on a variety of issues including StudentDiscipline and the Use of Information Technologyand they also include the Student Charter.10.1 EmailThe main means of communication within theUniversity is email so it is vital that you ensure thatyou set up your email account as soon as possibleand check your emails on a regular basis. You will beallocated an email account as part of the enrolmentprocess.11 Student responsibilities concerningUniversity regulationsPlease make yourself familiar with the UniversityRegulations for Students which can be viewed atwww.kent.ac.uk/regulations/index.htmlThe Academic Regulations relate to your academicstudies and the academic disciplinary procedures.If you need to develop further skills for yourprogramme, the convenor/director can give youadvice and arrange for extra tuition if necessary.Convenors are also able to request that you attendadditional classes, lectures and tutorials if these arethought necessary for your academic progress.In general it is your responsibility to tell theProgramme Convenor if you have any administrativeor academic related problems. The Convenor isrequired by the Faculty to give prompt attention andreplies to your requests, to comment on your writtenwork within a reasonable time, and to put you intouch with other people working in your area if that ishelpful.Each School will have staff who can help to supportyou and offer guidance with any issues that ariseduring your studies. The best person to talk to abouta particular issue will depend on the nature of theissue and the structure of your School but help canbe sought from some or all of the following:Academic Adviser, Student Representative, StudentSupport Adviser, Module Convenors, Director ofGraduate Studies or other members of academicand support staff.13 Credit FrameworkThe University’s Credit Framework for TaughtProgrammes provides information on Examinations,Marking, and Credit Requirements for Awards.
