4 / POSTGRADUATE STUDENT HANDBOOKBACKGROUNDThe Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS) was establishedon 1 April 1995 as a centre for research in Social Sciences at UniversitiKebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). On 15 August 2013, the Institute was mergedwith the Institute of Occidental Studies (IKON) and the Institute of West AsianStudies (IKRAB). Following the restructuring, the IKMAS now focuses onMalaysian and International Studies.VISION, MISSION AND EDUCATIONAL GOALSVISIONTo be a research centre of excellence on regional and transregional studiesleading to an understanding of historical and contemporary transformations,bearing in mind the interests of the Malaysian society.MISSIONTo engage in collaborative research, education and service that seek to establishIKMAS as a nationally and globally recognised institute for inter-disciplinaryresearch.EDUCATIONAL GOALS To conduct basic, applied and strategic research including policy inputthat is beneficial to society; To promote collaborative research and dialogue at the national andglobal level; To contribute to the discourse on globalisation, occidentalism and socialtransformation from the perspectives of developing nations; To build human capital and nurture independent scholarship throughpostgraduate studies.

The focus is to equip the students with anoverall understanding of social science research principles in their effort toprepare a sound research proposal.
