I believe that it is every teacher’s ultimate desire to instilla love of learning in his/her students. One way that studentsbecome life-long learners is to become life-long readers! Therefore, in essence, learning to read may be the mostimportant thing for a child to learn.Phonological awareness is the ability to recognize thatwords are made up of a variety of sound units. As a child developsphonological awareness she not only comes to understand thatwords are made up of small sound units called phonemes, but thatthese phonemes can be segmented into larger sound parts knownas syllables. Phonological awareness is the basis for phonicswhich is the understanding that sounds and letters in print areconnected, and that when put together that is the act of reading. This assessment can be used to assess early readers’ abilityto hear individual sounds (phonemes) in words as well as to assesswhether an emergent reader can manipulate sounds withinwords. I administer this assessment at three differentcheckpoints in the year as a way to gauge whether my studentswere “getting it” or not. It gives me an idea of where my students’weaknesses lie, and helps me plan for effective instruction.Things to consider:1. It is very important to make sure that you are in arelatively quiet area (funny, I know ) so that your studentcan hear you well, and you can hear her.2. I use a different color for each administration so that I caneasily track growth.3. There are exactly 100 items on this assessment for easyscoring as far as a % goes.4. I typically put a check mark next to the items that arecorrect and leave incorrect answers blank. If I notice apattern in the incorrect answers I will often jot notes tomyself to aide in planning instruction.5. When I re-administer the test the next time I simply startwith the ones that were leftblankpreviously.Createdby Georgia’sThird grade Pirate Cove

A phonological awareness screener is an informal assessment that enables a teacher to identify missing phonological awareness skills that may impair a student’s ability to master phonemic awareness, a critical skill for reading and

and concepts associated with this aspect of research-based effective reading instruction. Examples of phonological awareness activities will be provided, as well as opportunities to evaluate how phonological awareness is addressed in published reading programs. Teachers can modify examples of activities provided in this session to meet the needs of

phonological awareness skill in some situations but not in others. By watching students over time in a variety of activities, the teacher can develop a more accurate view of what students know and what they need to learn. The assessment of phonological awareness needs to focus on
