“Go forth and makedisciples of all nations ”-Matthew 28:19St. Paul, one of the Church’s greatest disciples, followed thiscommandment and brought the Church to many lands andpeople by blending his knowledge of various cultures andlanguages. He has shaped much of our faith, and continuesthrough his writings to challenge us to encounter our own culture bravely, with Christ as our guide. The mission of the Koch Foundation is to provide assistanceto all Disciples of Christ, those who are and those who are yetto be.p2

Mission StatementCarl Koch’s belief that he was “just a steward of the financesgiven by God to use on His behalf” inspired the commitmenthe and his wife, Paula, made to founding the Koch Foundationin 1979. The Foundation’s goals are to strengthen and to propagate the Roman Catholic faith by providing grant support fora wide variety of evangelization efforts. In considering applications, major emphasis is placed on sound but financially-needyevangelical programs. The Koch Foundation is internationalin scope with no geographical preference.p3

“For so the Lord commanded us,I have set thee for a light to the Gentiles,to be a means of salvation to thevery ends of the earth.”-Acts XIII, 46-47Message From the Executive DirectorThese are the words of St. Paul as he set out from Antioch, the city where followers of Christ were first calledChristians, to begin spreading the message of the LivingGod to all peoples. Travel was dangerous in his day, andhis evangelization efforts were often met with animosity, but he never relented. St. Paul traversed the widthand breadth of the known world, using his knowledge ofthe area’s cultures and languages to bring the story andteachings of Jesus Christ to many, making them Disciples of Christ. He is ranked among the Church’s greatest missionaries for his work; and through his writings,he continues to influence Christian thought.with a strong faith in God and His Church, and a desireto help the abandoned and forgotten, to strengthen existing Catholic communities and to create new ones.p4Discalced Carmelite Nuns in the PhilippinesThese missionaries have gifted us with their stories ofchallenges surmounted where the Church is still young, and of beliefs renewed and spirituality rejuvenatedwhere Catholicism’s deep roots were being threatened.Always expressed in these accounts is a joy that canonly come from selflessly following in the footstepsof St. Paul, and it is this joy that the Koch Foundation hopes to spread. Working together, as the earlyChristians of Antioch did, we can bring the messageIn this year declared the “Year of St. Paul” by His Ho- of Christ to all and become “a light of the Nations.”liness, Pope Benedict XVI, the Koch Foundation re- (Is.49:6; Acts 13:47)news its dedication to the Pauline mission of worldwideevangelization. Through our support of those men andwomen who, forsaking the riches of this world for theTreasure of Heaven, have overcome resentment, hostility and other hardships to make Disciples of Christ ofthose who have yet to know Him. Like St. Paul beforethem, these missionaries understood that the path theyhad chosen was fraught with peril, yet they persisted.Learning from his example, they have studied the different cultures and histories of the people to whomthey minister. They have combined this knowledge

Direct Evangelization“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there aredifferent forms of service but the same Lord there are different workingsbut the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” (1 Corinthians12:4-7)St. Paul’s conversion prepared him for his challenging role as one of theChurch’s greatest missionaries. Many did not believe his change of heartor his words of praise to God. However, he continued to preach, even inthe face of persecution.Following the tradition of St. Paul, the Koch Foundation funds DirectEvangelization programs and religious activities that directly support, strengthen and spread the Catholic faith.Salvatorian Sister in the CongoVianney Pastoral Center in Sivagangai, IndiaDiscalced Carmelite Nuns in Sri Lankap5

Preparation of EvangelistsSt. Paul tells us that when we let the Word of God in, all whom we encounter will sense a change. When we evangelize others we help them to understand the Gospel. “In the Year of St. Paul” we are presented with manyopportunities to spread our Catholic faith. St. Paul calls on us to becomeuntiring evangelizers and, in turn, we ask that through his intersession wemight become apostles of the faith in our world. The Koch Foundation funds the Preparation of Evangelists formation programs and religious activities that prepare individuals and groups to proclaim the “Good News” of salvation through the Catholic faith.Ordination of young men into the priesthood in Central AmericaHandmaids of the Holy Child Jesus in NigeriaFuture evangelistsp11St. John’s School Sekondi, Ghana

Catholic Schools“See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called thechildren of God. Yet so we are.” (1 John 3:1)For Catholic children, a Catholic education provides a sturdy foundationof faith and reinforces the love we have been given by God and His Precious Son, who so loved the world that He died for our sins. Catholicschools historically provide education to all children, regardless of classor creed, and are, therefore, fertile grounds for primary evangelization. These schools also serve as a means of educating non-Catholics aboutour faith in the spirit of interfaith dialogue, something that is increasinglyimportant in our world. The Koch Foundation continues to support Catholic education for all, bothat home and abroad, so as to insure that future generations will benefitSalvatorian Sisters teaching schoolfrom the strong values and sense of responsibility that instill.in the PhilippinesCarmelite Nun teaching school in the CongoStudent in Paraguayp17

Mass Media“For our Gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in theHoly Spirit and [with] much conviction.” (1Thessalonians:5)Advances in modern technology have made it easier to share the Word of God, allowing the missionaries of this age to reach out to new communities, instantly andin their own languages. Here, again, it is the model of St. Paul, using the meansavailable to traverse distances and differences in language and culture, that drivesevangelization in the 21st Century. But each one must becareful how he builds upon it, for no one can lay a foundation other thanthe one that is there, namely Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:10-11)Though God is not found in roofs or walls but in the hearts and souls ofbelievers, it is still important for a community to have a place to gather forworship and catechesis. With Jesus Christ as the foundation, these communities are creating symbols of faith that will last through the generations and stand as testament to the strength of the Catholic Church.By assisting in the construction and/or renovation of parish churches andcathedrals, convents, monasteries, schools, and religious formation centers worldwide we, too, are building upon the foundation He has laid. The Koch Foundation provides support for Capital Expenditures whichincludes the construction or repair of church buildings, convents, monasteries, and religious formation centers worldwide.Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculatein the Democratic Republic of the Congobuilding a churchMissionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate inthe Democratic Republic of the Congobuilding a churchConstruction of a church in A Luoi Parish, Vietnamp22
