1. IntroductionThe EU legislation governing the authorisation and supervision of veterinary medicinal products in theEuropean Union (Regulation (EC) 726/2004 of the European Parliament, require the continued safetyof veterinary medicinal products, once in use. This is ensured through the pharmacovigilance systemsof the Member States, which collect and evaluate information useful in the surveillance of veterinarymedicinal products, with particular reference to adverse events in animals and in human beings relatedto the use of veterinary medicinal products. In order to facilitate the exchange of information aboutpharmacovigilance within the European Union (EU), the European Commission has published guidanceon the collection, verification and presentation of adverse reaction reports, including technicalrequirements for electronic exchange of veterinary pharmacovigilance information in Volume 9 of Therules governing medicinal products in the European Union in consultation with the European MedicinesAgency (the Agency). Furthermore, legislation now requires electronic reporting of suspected adversereactions and a data-processing network for the reporting. The data-processing network,EudraVigilance Veterinary, has been set up by the Agency, in collaboration with the Member States andthe European Commission to support the pharmacovigilance activities.Part III of Volume 9 gives general information on EU electronic exchange of pharmacovigilanceinformation. In this part reference is made to the VeDDRA 1 Species List designed to support theclassification, retrieval, presentation and communication of animal species related to the class, theanimal role, the production type and the sex. The CVMP guideline EMEA/CVMP/065/03 ‘data elementsfor the electronic submission of adverse reaction reports related to veterinary medicinal productsauthorised in the European Economic Area (EEA) including message and transmission specifications’provides more specific information on the electronic exchange of veterinary pharmacovigilanceinformation and makes reference to species and breed lists under development. In support of the above-mentioned data-processing network, the initial list mentioned in Volume 9 hasnow been revised to maintain the lists required by guideline EMEA/CVMP/065/03 for electronicreporting for structured identification of animals involved in adverse events and is set out below. Thelist is not intended to be a complete list of all existing species and breeds. It is instead a compilation ofall animal species and breeds considered relevant by the Member States on the basis of theirexperience with veterinary pharmacovigilance reports. The list will continue to be updated on a yearlybasis, in which written requests received by the Agency (veddra@ema.europa.eu) will be considered. The CVMP Pharmacovigilance Working Party update the list for adoption by CVMP each year. With the exception of “Canine/dog” where the original breed names are included, the internationalbreed names are listed (in the majority of cases these are the names of the breeds in the Englishlanguage), as indicated in the respective references for the breeds (see below). For “Canine/dog”,generally breeds recognised by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) are listed, using theoriginal breed name recognised by this organisation. For information purposes only a column has beenadded that provides the respective recognised English names for the dog breeds, to facilitateidentification of the breeds. This column is not required for implementation in a computer system.Where no breed or lowest level classification was specified, NA (not applicable) or NOS (not otherwisespecified), as appropriate, is included at the lowest level classification. The list is presented inalphabetical and not in taxonomical order. Latin names are not indicated with the exception of molluscsand fish where it was deemed helpful.1 Veterinary Dictionary for Drug Regulatory ActivitiesList of species and breeds for electronic reporting of suspected adverse reactions inveterinary pharmacovigilanceEMA/CVMP/553/03 – Rev.6Page 2/37

When used for electronic transmission of reports on adverse events to veterinary medicines, this list ofspecies and breeds will be transformed into a database. Species and breed names should then betransmitted in the form of numerical codes, which will be integral part of the database. This willfacilitate use of different language.2.
