From a letter of Conrad of Marburg,Saint Elizabeth’s spiritual directorFrom this time onward Elizabeth’s goodness greatlyincreased. She was a lifelong friend of the poor and gaveherself entirely to relieving the hungry. She ordered that oneof her castles should be converted into a hospital in whichshe gathered many of the weak and feeble. She generouslygave alms to all who were in need, not only in that place butin all the territories of her husband’s empire. She spent allher own revenue from her husband’s four principalities, andfinally she sold her luxurious’ possessions and rich clothes forthe sake of the poor.FROM FATHER MARQUARDFOUR HOLY WOMENThis week, the Church celebrates the memorials of four holywomen: Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini (Nov. 13), SaintGertrude (Nov. 16), Saint Margaret of Scotland (Nov. 16), andSaint Elizabeth of Hungary (Nov. 17). These women provideus with examples of unbounded compassion, profoundprayer, and abiding love of Jesus Christ. The followingwritings, which come from the Liturgy of the Hours, provideus with insight into the lives of two of them. From the homily of Pope Pius XIIat the canonization of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini.Inspired by the grace of God, we join the saints in honoringthe holy virgin Frances Xavier Cabrini. She was a humblewoman who became outstanding not because she wasfamous, or rich or powerful, but because she lived a virtuouslife. From the tender years of her youth, she kept herinnocence as white as a lily and preserved it carefully with thethorns of penitence; as the years progressed, she was movedby a certain instinct and a supernatural zeal to dedicate herwhole life to the service and greater glory of God.Twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, Elizabethwent to visit the sick. She personally cared for those whowere particularly repulsive; to some she gave food, to othersclothing; some she carried on her own shoulders, andperformed many other kindly services. Her husband, ofhappy memory, gladly approved of these charitable works. Finally, when her husband died, she sought the highestperfection; filled with tears, she implored me to let her begfor alms from door to door.On Good Friday of that year, when the altars had beenstripped, she laid her hands on the altar in a chapel in herown town, where she had established the Friars Minor, andbefore witnesses she voluntarily renounced all worldlydisplay and everything that our Savior in the gospel advisesus to abandon. Even then she saw that she could still bedistracted by the cares and worldly glory which hadsurrounded her while her husband was alive. Against my willshe followed me to Marburg. Here in the town she built ahospice where she gathered together the weak and the feeble. There she attended the most wretched and contemptible ather own table. She welcomed delinquent youths into safe homes and taughtthem to live upright and holy lives. She consoled those whowere in prison and recalled to them the hope of eternal life. She encouraged prisoners to reform themselves and to livehonest lives. She comforted the sick and the infirm in the hospitals anddiligently cared for them. She extended a friendly andhelping hand especially to immigrants and offered themnecessary shelter and relief, for having left their homelandbehind, they were wandering about in a foreign land with noplace to turn for help. Because of their condition she saw thatthey were in danger of deserting the practice of Christianvirtues and their Catholic faith.Apart from those active good works, I declare before God thatI have seldom seen a more contemplative woman. When shewas coming from private prayer, some religious men andwomen often saw her face shining marvelously and lightcoming from her eyes like the rays of the sun.Where did she acquire all that strength and the inexhaustibleenergy by which she was able to perform so many good worksand to surmount so many difficulties involving materialthings, travel and men? Undoubtedly she accomplished allthis through the faith which was always so vibrant and alivein her heart; through the divine love which burned withinher; and, finally, through constant prayer by which she wasso closely united with God from whom she humbly asked andobtained whatever her human weakness could not obtain. Before her death I heard her confession. When I asked whatshould be done about her goods and possessions, she repliedthat anything which seemed to be hers belonged to the poor. She asked me to distribute everything except one worn outdress in which she wished to be buried. When all this hadbeen decided, she received the body of our Lord. Afterward, until vespers, she spoke often of the holiest things she hadheard in sermons. Then, she devoutly commended to God allwho were sitting near her, and as if falling into a gentle sleep, she died.In the face of the endless cares and anxieties of life, she neverlet anything turn her aside from striving and aiming to pleaseGod and to work for his glory for which nothing, aided byGod’s grace, seemed too laborious, or difficult, or beyondhuman strength.September 2018COLLECTIONSSept 2018ActualSept 2018BudgetDifferenceFiscal Year toDate ActualFiscal Year toDate BudgetDifferenceEnvelopes 63,050 56,250 6,800 165,901 168,750 (2,849)Plate 2,633 2,666 (33) 6,640 8,000 (1,360)Total 65,684 58,916 6,767 172,541 176,750 (4,209)Sunday giving keeps the lights on, pays for repairs, supports the parish's investment in the school, and funds all ministries andoperations.
