AMMUNITIONWARNING: NEVER USE AMMUNITION NOT SPECIFICALLY DESIGNATED FOR USE IN YOUR FIREARM.FAILURE TO USE THE CORRECT TYPE OR CALIBEROF AMMUNITION MAY CAUSE THE FIREARM TO JAM, FAIL TOFIRE OR EVEN GENERATE EXCESSIVE PRESSURE WHICHCAN DAMAGE OR EVEN RUPTURE YOUR FIREARM, CAUSINGPERSONAL INJURY, DEATH OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.Locate the cartridge designationmarked on the firearm. Thisinformation indicates the correctammunition that must be usedin this firearm (Figure 1).You are responsible for selecting ammunition that meetsindustry standards and isappropriate in type and caliberfor this firearm.CARTRIDGE DESIGNATIONON BARRELFIGURE 1Never use a cartridge not specifically designated for use in yourfirearm. The wrong type of ammunition may exceed the capabilityof your firearm and may damage or even rupture your firearm.Never mix ammunition. In some cases, a round of ammunition not specified on yourfirearm may fit into the chamber. Firing ammunition not specifiedon your firearm may cause it to rupture and cause serious injuryor death to you or others.Always inspect your ammunition before using it. Never use dirty, corroded or damaged ammunition which can lead to a burst cartridge which may cause damage to the firearm and personal injuryor death.Use only commercially manufactured ammunition with internalballistic pressures which are in strict accordance with the specifications of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’Institute (SAAMI). If you are uncertain, contact your ammunitionsupplier for verification.9

AMMUNITION CONT’DWARNING: NEVER USE NON-STANDARD, RELOADEDOR “HANDLOADED” AMMUNITION WHICH HAS NOTBEEN SUBJECTED TO INTERNAL BALLISTIC PRESSURE TESTING. RELOADED OR HANDLOADED AMMUNITION,MAY HAVE MANY MANUFACTURING AND QUALITY VARIABLES (SUCH AS THE TYPE AND AMOUNT OF GUN POWDER).ANY AMMUNITION THAT IS IMPROPERLY MANUFACTURED,EVEN IN THE SLIGHTEST DEGREE, MAY FAIL TO FIRE OR MAYGENERATE EXCESSIVE INTERNAL PRESSURES WHICH CANDAMAGE OR EVEN RUPTURE THE FIREARM, CAUSING PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH TO THE SHOOTER OR THOSE INTHE IMMEDIATE VICINITY.A firearm and ammunition are a system and must work together. There are different types of ammunition for different types offirearms. Your firearm has been designed for ammunition of aspecific type and a specific gauge or caliber. It is important toselect the proper ammunition for your firearm.Different combinations of bullet velocity, bullet weight and firearmweight can have major impact on felt recoil; high felt recoil canbe uncomfortable to some shooters. For example: Firearm Weight: lower firearm weight increases felt recoil. Bullet Weight: higher bullet weight increases felt recoil. Bullet Velocity: higher bullet velocity increases felt recoil. To acclimate yourself to higher levels of felt recoil, consider the following: Use a firm two-hand hold on the grip when firing. Always start your shooting experience with the lowest bulletvelocity and lowest bullet weight available for your firearm. Ask your firearm dealer to suggest the lowest power, lowest velocity, lightest bullet weight for your firearm.WARNING: NEVER USE AMMUNITION OF THEINCORRECT GAUGE OR CALIBER. USING AMMUNITION OF THE INCORRECT GAUGE OR CALIBER MAYCAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR FIREARM AND POSSIBLE SERIOUS INJURY TO YOU AND TO OTHERS.10

AMMUNITION CONT’DWARNING: NEVER USE CARTRIDGES OTHER THANTHOSE DESIGNATED BY THE MARKING ON THEFIREARM. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN DANGEROUSLY HIGH PRESSURES THAT MAY DAMAGE THE FIREARMAND POSSIBLY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY TO YOURSELFAND OTHERS.WARNING: DEATH, SERIOUS INJURY AND DAMAGECAN RESULT FROM THE USE OF INCORRECTAMMUNITION OR BORE OBSTRUCTIONS. NEVERUSE RELOADS OF ANY KIND.“Plus-P” ( P) ammunition generates pressures in excess of thepressures associated with standard ammunition. Such pressuresmay affect the wear characteristics or exceed the margin of safety. Use of “Plus-P” ammunition may result in the need for morefrequent service.“Plus-P-Plus” ( P ) ammunition must not be used in Smith &Wesson firearms. This marking on the ammunition designates thatit exceeds established industry standards, but the designationdoes not represent defined pressure limits and therefore suchammunition may vary significantly as to the pressures generatedand could be DANGEROUS.Some brands of ammunition may cause difficulty in extractingspent cartridge cases from the chamber. If this situation occurs, thoroughly clean the chamber with solvent. If this condition persists, we recommend changing to another brand of ammunition.11
