2 The Spirit of ProvidenceAmission of compassion . . .a vision of excellence . . .for life! By now, you’ve seen and heard the television & radiomessages . . .you’ve read the newspaper, the billboards, and the city magazines . . . and, the communicationefforts we’re making in Central Texas are effective, warm, and packed with the images of people who, throughthe years, have made Providence their provider of choice in healthcare!Over 120 associates, volunteers, Foundation members, family members & supporters participated in the casting of the television & photographypieces of our “For Life!” campaign—this was a gift of time and talent given freely back to this ministry . . .and we are eternally grateful. In addition,twenty-three Waco physicians participated . . .and this support from the medical community is but another testimony of the commitmentProvidence has made over the past 106 years to excellence in healthcare. Our campaign message is certainly true . . .Providence IS a mission of compassion. Since our very first patient in December of 1904, we havebeen giving care in the context of the infused virtues: faith, hope, and charity. In faith, we acknowledge our calling . . .in hope, we believe in thefuture . . .and, in charity, we fulfill our mission. It’s also clear that our vision is one of excellence. As I ponder the ways we give care in our Providence continuum, I think of the cardinal virtues:prudence, temperance, courage and justice. In prudence, we discipline ourselves through the practice of reason; in temperance, we moderate ouractions & thoughts within the context of healing ministry; in courage, we boldly face the challenges of a changing industry & marketplace; and, injustice, we behave responsibly and morally through our actions and our deeds. So, it is with these thoughts that we move into the Advent season, celebrating the time of year when God chose to visit humankind in the formof a Man. It is in THIS Man, Jesus, that our healing ministry is rooted. And, while His life on earth was but temporary and brief . . .His influenceis eternal. As your President and CEO, I want to express my personal gratitude to Christ . . .and, to those who serve Him through the ministry of ProvidenceHealthcare Network. We are a strong network of physicians, associates, volunteers, donors, and supporters . . .all living life to the fullest as a testimonyto the One who has called us to this ministry together. Thanks for the role you fulfill in making Providence a true testimony of compassion and excellence.Beverley joins me in wishing you and your loved ones the happiest of holiday seasons. It is our wish that you will sense a real measure of“peace on earth . . .and goodwill toward everyone,”Kent A. The Spirit of Providence 3Providence Foundation Awards Grants for New Technologyby Dave Guyer, CFRE, Vice President, Development; Executive Director, Providence FoundationThe Providence Foundation was established 18 years ago, with the intention of continuously providing needed philanthropic support to the ProvidenceHealthcare Network. Since 1993, the Providence Foundation has provided Providence with millions of dollars in capital and program funding.About 6 million has been funded to Providence through the Foundation’s fall and spring grant funding cycles. This funding represents 239 grantsincluding the 6 fall grants, totaling 110,354.06.“The success the Foundation has enjoyed over the years not only stems from dynamic leadership but also from the Foundation’s wonderful donors. It’s because of them that we are here to present some pretty big, ‘big checks’ to some of our fortunate Providence departments,” Providence FoundationBoard Chairman Scott Felton said.Providence Foundation Board Chairman Scott Felton and Board Member Penny Aynesworthpresent Annette Ayers, CNO and Senior Vice President of Nursing Services and Eileen Bohannon,Director of the Emergency Department, a check for 11,122.20 for the purchase of two patientcare stretchers. These new stretchers will have a 700 pound weight capacity, are designed togently support patients who are prone to pressure ulcers and are easy for our staff to drivewhen transporting patients—an important safety consideration.Providence Foundation Board Chairman Scott Felton and Board Member Johnny Mankin presentAnnette Ayers, CNO, Senior Vice President of Nursing Services and Debbie Kucera, Directorof Cardiology, a check for 11,000 for the purchase of the NuStep T5XR Recumbent CrossTrainer & SciFit REX Obri-Linear Total Body Trainer. Many cardio-pulmonary patients cannotuse conventional exercise equipment such as a tread mill or an upright exercise bike because ofphysical limitations. A NuStep T5XR Recumbent Cross Trainer and a SciFit REX Orbi-Linear TotalBody Trainer will benefit our patients by giving them an upper body workout, strengthening theirchest and arm muscles, their back muscles, improving their cardiovascular conditioning and theirlung function while lower body workouts would strengthen their leg muscles through a wide rangeof motion.Providence Foundation Board Chairman Scott Felton and Board Member Bill Schroederpresent Amy Kershner, 3rd Floor Director and Annette Ayers, CNO and Senior Vice Presidentof Nursing Services a check for 17,500 for the purchase of a Site Rite Ultrasound Unit. Mostof the Health Center’s patients on our 3 North floor are renal patients. These special patientsusually require dialysis three times a week in order to sustain life. In order to do dialysis, catheters must be inserted. The Site Rite Ultrasound device is used to find large veins in thechest for catheter insertion, making the procedure safe for the patient and easier for our nursesand physicians. This new model will enhance patient care.Providence Foundation Fall Grants continued page 7Providence Foundation Forum Annual Fall Meetingby Heather Beck, Providence Foundation Development OfficerThe Providence Foundation Forum gathered on what felt like the first night of Fall for their annual Fall meeting at 135 Prime on Thursday, October27th. 4 The Spirit of ProvidenceReturning the GazeDon’t you love those little reflections that Chaplain Servicessend out each day? It’s a wonderful way, along with the prayeroverhead and the daily prayer at safety huddle, to start our daywith remembering why we are here.Dear Kent and the Providence Family,Thank you for your generous donation to“Seton Cares” to assist with the ongoingBastrop Wildfire Relief efforts. Morethan twenty-eight associates lost theirhomes in the fires and the rebuildingefforts will be tremendous. Throughthe kindness of friends like you, ourcommunity and family will be able toagain enjoy the simple joy of returninghome and spending quality time withtheir families. We appreciate yourthoughtfulness.Speaking of prayer, one of the reflections Deacon Greg sent out talked about God’s continuousloving gaze on each of us, His children. Just that thought alone is enough to give thanks. A lovinggaze—quite different from the “old time” thoughts that God was watching just to catch us andcondemn us. Hopefully those days are gone forever.God’s gaze, the loving gaze of a father. I was blessed with a great father—loving, funny, alwaysenjoying “all the kids.” If one was “acting up” he’d say “Don’t worry, when he’s 30, he won’t do itanymore.” And sure enough, he’d be right. So you can see why my idea of God the Father, is what it is!But the best part of the reflection was this: Prayer then, is returning the gaze. I just love that and itstruck me to the core. Simply recognize God’s presence, that He is gazing lovingly at us and then lookback at Him in our hearts. That’s prayer! Try it—I promise you will be comforted.Charles Barnett and Seton HospitalAnd it so fits in with our mission—to serve God by serving the sick. So, as we look at our patients, families and each other, with the recognition that God is there gazing at us, all we have to do is lookback with love! So how easy is that!?Dear Providence Healthcare Network:That means serving all who come to us and each other with this thought in mind is prayer. What agift we have each day!The Gatesville Primary School would like tothank you for your support during our RedRibbon week. We appreciate the wristbandsyour hospital generously donates to our schoolevery year. Thank you so much for making adifference in the lives of our children andour community.Respectfully,Carrie BrizendineGatesville Primary School CounselorTo Providence Hospital:In early November, Richard, a chargenurse at Kindred ICU in Arlingtoncalled on behalf of one of his patients to“thank everyone for saving my kidneyand not letting me die.” After expressing thepatient’s gratitude, Richard gave a briefupdate on her status: “she is off the ventilator, walking around and her kidney function isnormal. She is being transferred to thestepdown unit today.” He finished the call byexpressing his own gratitude for compassionateand excellent care our ICU team providesto patients: “Kindred has received multiplepatients from Providence and it is obviousyou take great care of them. Kindred receivespatients from all over: Oklahoma, Texas andArkansas and Providence is in the top 10!”See you around and here’s looking at ya!Sister CEine Tolle Zeit hatte von Allen! Underneaththe tent were tables decorated with authenticBob & Diane McEachern and Beverley & Kent Keahey enjoy theGerman “biersteins” and beautiful fall mums.“wunderbar” German food at the 2011 Oktoberfest.Oktoberfest posters and signs, along with blueand white table cloths, streamers and balloons added to the festive décor (blue and white are the “official”Oktoberfest colors). Thanks to Glazer’s Distribution, guests were treated to genuine Oktoberfest “biers” along with severalGerman wines including German Riesling. The food was “wunderbar!” with three kinds of German sausage, grilled chicken, homemade German potato salad, hand twisted bread pretzels, black bread, potato bread, premium sauerkrault and delectable “apfel” strudel. There was also “to die for” German chocolate cakedonated by “meisterbaker” Esther Allen. Tom Pardaen and E.W. Burdette volunteered once again as our“grillmeisters.” Authentic German polka “muzik” filled the war autumn air thanks to Bruce Carbonara.Dave Guyer, Executive Director of the Providence Foundation stated, “We always like to have fun however, the main reason that we present Oktoberfest is to express our deepest appreciation to our generous FoundersSociety donors. We can never thank our donors enough for what they do in helping Providence to advanceits mission of “serving the sick-poor!” If you are not already a Founders Society member, it’s easy to join!Simply contact Dave or Heather Beck, the Foundation’s development officer.
