SpaceClaim 2012 Release NotesSpaceClaim 2012 Enhancements OverviewThis release introduces significant new capabilities for manufacturing, simulation, concept development, and mesh remodeling. These enhancements will help all engineers work more effectively in 3D, withoutthe high cost and complexity of traditional CAD.New capabilities in SpaceClaim 2012 include: Numerous enhancements for manufacturing workflows, including connections to Mastercamand Esprit, new annotation types like weld symbols, machinist-friendly measuring andpositioning, broken and broken out section views, and advanced sheet metal capabilities such asformed bends. New tools to work with mesh and STL data, such as the ability to compare a mesh to a solid, improved section curve fitting, plane and cylinder fitting, mesh splitting, and improved selectionand coloring. Major improvements to core modeling, including significant performance improvements, radialmove, curve filling, structure search, section properties, and XYZ-based move. SpaceClaim 2012 is certified for Windows 8. New language support for Polish, Czech, and Portuguese, bringing the total number of languagessupported by SpaceClaim to 12, including English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese,Korean, as well as Traditional and Simplified Chinese. The production release of version 10 of the SpaceClaim API, including mesh support, animationhandlers, custom window support, the ability to replace panels, asynchronous threading toupdate custom objects in the background, and the ability to add custom items to the structuretree. As previously announced, built-in, free PDM using Microsoft SharePoint

SpaceClaim 2012 SP2 Release NotesSP2 ItemsSupport has been added for MS Surface Pro tablet PC’s by adding system awareness of the pixel density(DPI).Mini-toolbars have been added for sheet metal thickness edges and side faces.Thickness edge mini-toolbar:Side face mini-toolbar:When measuring Draft in the Measure tab, you can now set the Draft Direction using the World Origin. For selected component patterns, there is now an Unpattern command in the RMB menu. The Use matching SpaceClaim documents for faster export option is now disregarded formanufacturing integrations. It is located in the General page of SpaceClaim Options under Importoptions. This option, is intended to speed the import of very large assemblies by saving the part files ondisk as they are read. In the manufacturing use case, you want to prevent SpaceClaim from importingthe old version of a file that has been overwritten with the same name but different (manufacturing)geometry. You can now access and download models from the Cadenas website using a new button in the Insertgroup File menu (not to be confused with the former Application menu which is now labeled as File).Unlike TraceParts, you cannot insert Cadenas models directly into SpaceClaim. The File menu allows youto access their website, where you can select and download files onto your computer. You candownload models in any of their supported formats. The button links al/spaceclaim

SpaceClaim 2012 SP1 Release NotesSP1 ItemsYou can now create a Full Round (if possible) when modifying an existing roundby pulling in the opposite direction. Previously, this only worked during the initialcreation of the round. You can now modify a toroidal round attached to a sphere using the Pull tool. Anexample of this case is shown in the image to the right. The Pull tool now succeeds in cases where changing a round radius will consumeinterior faces. An example is shown below.Corner transitions in Fillets can now be changed to othertypes with Select and Pull mini-toolbars. The other types are: Sweep Around Corner Sweep on Miter CornerChamfers can now be pulled up to Mesh vertices in the same way that rounds can.

SpaceClaim 2012 SP1 Release NotesYou can now add a Pull and Draft angle to a group and apply it tofuture Pulls.Move performance has been significantly improved. In general, cases where neighboring faces for the Move operation havemany internal loops (depressions, protrusions) will see performance improvement.Radial Move now allows Ctrl drag copy.Copied faces (using Ctrl drag) now retain their attributes, like color and thickness. You can now pattern Custom Objects and Notes.Dimension-driven editing has been improved. Previously, some modifications would not work becausethe system was attempting to reach zero error (within modeling accuracy). Now, if the result is within arelatively small tolerance (0.1 degrees for angular values and 0.1mm for linear) a message will be shownwith the actual result reached, to 8 decimal places. The Measure tool button and the ‘E’ shortcut now invoke the Measure tool the same way in allcontexts. They also do not allow setting up driving measurements. Only the Measure button in theoption panels for the Pull and Move tools allows for setting up driving measurements. There is now a Copy button in the Measure tool text box. Hovering over a measurement value shows acopy button to copy the value. The earlier behavior of copying the entire measurement popup text tothe clipboard, is retained (unless overridden, as stated, with the button).

SpaceClaim 2012 SP1 Release NotesDeviation tool enhancements: Added checkbox in the Options panel to turn off Target body display. The Ctrl key is no longer required for the two selections, making it consistent with the “alwaystwo” selection tools like Midsurface and “always many” selections like Volume Extract. If Ctrl ispressed, it is ignored. Added body deviation analysis sampling GUI. Added a Swap Source/Target button. Added sample point display type.Added progress bar and interrupt capability for the Mesh Deviation tool.Double-clicking on a non-planar, non-filleted face now selects ALL tangent faces. Previously, it selectedfaces out to some arbitrary limit. You can now search the Structure Tree withCtrl F. The following options are available: Look in Match case Match whole word Search up Zoom to fit Wildcard and Expression search methods Switches to search the Whole Documentor the Active ComponentNotes are now shown in the Structure Tree. Likecurves, notes can live in datum planes or drawingsheets. Unlike curves, they do not live directly in apart. So, in a part, you will not see a Notes folder. The note contents have nothing to do with thename of the note in the structure tree, despiteappearing so in the image. The “More notes” node expands in place to showunnamed notes.

SpaceClaim 2012 SP1 Release NotesIn a drawing sheet, just like curves, there is a Notesfolder. When splitting a Mesh, there is a new option that lets you cap the split mesh with a planar mesh piece.Mesh options in the Split Body tool are disabled if the design does not contain any mesh objects.Vertex quick drag of whole bodies now only works when the vertex being dragged was pre-selectedprior to the drag operation. Previously, you could accidentally and unknowingly drag when boxselecting. The Mesh paint selection radius setting has been moved to the Options Selection panel. Previously, itwas in the lower status bar’s Selection popup dialog.Specular Highlight has been added to Object Export bydefault. This allows exporting from SpaceClaim toSketchFab, which expects certain values in the materialfile (.mtl).

SpaceClaim 2012 SP1 Release NotesBend –Up behavior now allows selection ofRadii from a set of table-driven values. Thetable is an extension of the current BendTable format (.csv file) and is applied to thepart like a normal Bend Table. The data typefor the new table is “DataType Radius”.Normal Bend table data is “DataTypeCompensation”. The .csv file can containRadius data, Compensation data, or both. Anexample of Radius data is shown to the right. For each combination of thickness and veedie width, there is a table within the file thatprovides the actual radius based on toolradius and angle. In the example, the yellowcells are the tool radius, blue cells are theangle, and the green cells are the actualradius applied to the geometry. The radius table only effects creation of thebend. Once it is created, the actual (tablelookup) radius is stored on the bend. Thereare no restrictions to prevent the user fromchanging the radius after creation. This alsomeans that disconnecting the table will have no effect on existing bends. To accommodate this change, there have been some changes to Sheet Metal Options. A Die width dropdown list hasbeen added to the options panel. The Bend radius text box is dynamically changed to a dropdown list and labeled “Tool radius” ifthe following conditions are met:o One or more edges of a sheetmetal part are selectedo The selected edge is in a partwhich references a bend tablefileo The bend table file contains atable that matches the part’sthickness and selected vee diewidth

SpaceClaim 2012 SP1 Release NotesThere are also changes to the Sheet metal Bend tool. The Bend radius text box is changed to a dropdown list list and labeled “Tool radius” when thefollowing conditions are met.o The tool is in Bend creation modeo A bend preview is placed on aface by clicking on an edgeo The selected face is in a partwhich references a bend table fileo The bend table file contains atable that matches the part’sthickness and selected vee diewidthThere is now a Snap to grid checkbox in the options panels of the Form tools.Bends with complex end conditions can now be created. An example is shown below. You can now Move and Pull walls with multiple split Hems. An example is shown below.

SpaceClaim 2012 SP1 Release NotesA warning message is now issued for Bend Up requests that cause walls to clash. In the example below, the result produces a non-manifold edge. In the Status Log, you will see the message: “Body may be selfintersecting or non-manifold.”Faceted bend areas are nowidentified and fixedautomatically in the Converttool. You can now Reverse a patterned singleTab.You can now Pull an edge consisting of only a single arc into a Flange form that can be Flattened.

SpaceClaim 2012 SP1 Release NotesWe added the ability to Identify Corner Reliefs with a newtool guide in the Identify tool.Conical bends with multiple bend steps now unfoldcorrectly.Performance of Conversion to Sheet metal has been enhanced dramatically for parts with many offsetfaces (internal regions) that are not thickness faces.Pulling a full edge and a partial edge together has been disallowed.Converting sheet metal parts with many holes in the faces is now 80X – 100X faster.Thru, blind, non-countersunk, and non-counterbore holes can now be placed on arbitrary planes with apreview projected onto the nearest solid face. This is useful for placing Standard Holes on non-planarfaces. However, only the geometry is created. No hole object is created and it cannot be modified as aStandard Hole.Weld Symbols can now be placed on vertices. When the boundary of a Broken-out Section view is selected, we now show a depth dimension. Visible immediately after the view is created Labeled DepthDriving dimensions are now editable in the drawing sheet via the Spark icons.

SpaceClaim 2012 SP1 Release NotesMoving many lines at once in a Drawing, or as LayoutCurves, has been optimized, and is many times faster. When under 1000 Curves are box-selected, aghost image of the old location is shown. When Layout Curves are single-selected orgreater than 1000 curves are box-selected,the curves are just moved without a ghostimage to save resources. Curves that are inordinately segmented nowmade mathematically more efficient whenfirst created in SpaceClaim.Sketch curves on drawing sheets can now be patterned using the Move tool.Secondary selections are now ignored if they produce curves that leave the drawing sheet or notes thatleave the annotation plane. An example is shown to the right. You can now enter Latin-based characters that require the ALTGr modifier key in dimensions and notes.AltGr is alternate graphic layout with the right Alt key to enter extra characters for languages likeGerman, French, Polish, Czech, etc.Notes on drawing sheets can now be patterned with the Linear Pattern and Circular Pattern tools. When creating Mating conditions, the object-action and action-object workflows now behave the sameway. Animation is shown in both cases and does not produce “jumping”. Animation for both can be turned off with the Animate Full Pull option. Objects inside and outside components may be aligned in both cases.Performance of the Make Independent function has been improved.A progress bar has been added to the Externalize and Make Independent functionality.Tangency indicators have been added to the Fit Curves tool. The Stitch, Gaps, and Missing Faces tools now have a popupprogress bar.Mid-planes can now be made between non-parallel solid faces.Points lying on faces now transfer to ANSYS as embedded vertices.

SpaceClaim 2012 SP1 Release NotesIn the SpaceClaim Options, the General page of File Options now has a switch to import Structure Onlyfor JT files. The switch is located under Use lightweight assemblies for imported documents. We now allow import of PCX bitmap image files.OBJ import has been added.Multi-threaded import for JT is now supported. The Assembly Structure Only option now works for JT filesIn SpaceClaim options, there is a new Export Version optionfor Rhino.Support has been added for INTCURVE, STRAIGHT, COEDGEtypes in SAT file import. The SpaceClaim Standalone Viewer now takes advantage of DirectX V11, if it is present in your graphicsboard. You can now drag and drop OBJ files to open them in the Viewer.

SpaceClaim 2012 Release NotesChanges to default settings and behaviorsSelection has been updated as follows: Ctrl Drag area select (box, lasso, polygon) has been modified to remove objects only if apreviously-selected object is in the area. If not, objects within the area are added to theselection. For Drag selection (box, lasso, polygon), Ctrl Shift Drag is now equivalent to Ctrl Drag. So,Ctrl Shift Drag will no longer toggle all objects. For click-selection in the Find and Fix tools, Ctrl will toggle selection and Shift will add toselection. Ctrl Drag selection of meshes has been made consistent with other objects. Any previouslyselected facets in the area are removed and un-selected facets are added to the selection. Ctrl click on a selected mesh facet will now toggle selection of the area. Previously, the Ctrl wasignored and the selection was replaced. In the Selection section of SpaceClaim options, Show previous selections is now Off by default. We hadinitially thought this would have helped you make repeated changes to previously-selected model facesand edges. Expert SpaceClaim users may have gotten used to this and keep it on, though we have foundthat new users can be confused by this behavior. In the Selection section of Advanced SpaceClaim Options,Select edge loops using mouse scroll wheel is nowenabled by default.

SpaceClaim 2012 Release NotesGraphics/UIThe default Windows UI style has changed to Office 10, Scenic

SpaceClaim 2012 SP1 Release Notes In a drawing sheet, just like curves, there is a Notes folder. When splitting a Mesh, there is a new option that lets you cap the split mesh with a planar mesh piece. Mesh options in the Split Body tool are disabled if the design does not contain any mesh objects. Vertex quick drag of whole bodies now only works when the vertex being dragged was pre-selected
