The preamble– “All men are created equal”– has been considered one ofthe best-known sentences inthe English language, and is anenduring statement on humanrights, containing “the most potent and consequential wordsin American history.” AbrahamLincoln based his entire philosophy on it, and it has becomethe passage representing amoral standard for generationsthe world over.According to Wikipedia, Jefferson coordinated the acquisition of the vast Louisiana Territory from France in 1803, and in1804, sent explorers Lewis andClark out on their first expedi-By Michael ArmijoPhoto Courtesy: Wikipediation to the new west. Jefferson was said to be completely distraught and mourned hergreatly. There isevidence that after Jefferson’swife passed away – perhapsfor companionship - he had along-term relationship with Sally Hemings, one of his slaves, and was said to have fatheredher children.Jefferson took the oath ofPresidential office on Mar. 4,1801, and served two terms; heis considered one of the greatest presidents of our time.On July 3, 1826, extremelyill from toxemia and pneumonia, Jefferson called his familyand friends to his bedside andsaid, “I have done for my country, and for all mankind, all thatI could do, and I now resign mysoul, without fear, to my God,- my daughter to my country.”He was 83.After falling asleep, he wokelater that night and asked hisdoctor, “Is it the fourth yet?”Jefferson held out until 12:50p.m. on the Fourth of July – the50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. After sometime had passed, therealities began to set in.Some of my family membersare praying and pushing for amiracle. I am trying to be realistic. But deep inside, I, too,am hoping for that one littlechance for things to go back tothe way they used to be a fewmonths ago. Back when mymom would sit up, look me inthe eye, and say, “Mijo, bringme some sushi; they don’thave any here.”But, after sitting there listening to the rambling, pointing, incoherent sentences, and theunrealistic requests, I soon realized that normalcy is a placemy mom may never visit again. It’s fearful to see someonewho raised you, cared for you,and loved you for so manyyears lose those abilities. It’sfearful to come to the realization that life will definitelychange, forever. When a few of my friendspassed, they died suddenlyand unexpectedly. I’ve alwayswished I could have had moretime with them at the end.But after watching my mom,I think it was a blessing thatthey went so quickly. With mymom, I am forced to witnessthe slow deterioration of akind, compassionate, and giving individual. When my niece came to visit, my mom kept reaching outand placing something into herhand, over and over again. When my sister asked whatshe had been given, my niecereplied, “Nothing.” My mom isso giving, that she continuesthe process even when shehas nothing left to give.So now, as I sit here with aheavy heart once again, I amleft to wonder what will happennext. This time, I refuse to letthe unpredictability of life anddeath control me. I refuse togive up, because I am blessed(and cursed) to feel love andcompassion at such a heightened stage.I can proclaim that my giftsare my weaknesses, or I canclaim my weaknesses as giftsand do my best to remember the bright and shiny moments. I will remember all thegreat gifts I’ve received fromsuch a loving individual. AndI will try my damnedest tosmile through the tears andthe heartache, and I will forgive - because when someoneleaves this world, they leaveall that heartache and pain behind. And so will I.

Nguyen claimedthat he had paid an unidentifiedsuspect in Vietnam to handlethe group’s logistics (lodging, transportation, meals) oncethey arrived in the country. COLUMNISTSApril 2015Armijo NewsEyewitness NewsBy Pastor Mark HopperSome friends of mine recently returned from a trip to Israel. They were ona tour that included manyof the placesmentionedin the Bible. They saw theJordan River where Jesus wasbaptized; the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus’ disciples fished;and the Mediterranean Sea,where the Apostle Paul sailedto Rome. They also saw cities and towns like Bethlehem, where Jesus was born; Nazareth, where Jesus grew up; andJerusalem, where Jesus wascrucified. Although archeologists may not be able to identifysome of the specific sites mentioned in the Bible, they canconfirm that many of the citiesand places mentioned in the Bible still exist today. My friends shared that one oftheir favorite places to visit wasthe garden tomb where Jesusmay have been buried after hiscrucifixion by the Roman au-thorities. This beautiful gardenis located just outside the wallsof the old city of Jerusalem.Historians and archeologistscannot say this is definitely thelocation where Jesus was buried, but it certainly could be.The garden and the tomb arelocated close together. Thereis a hill that looks like the onedescribed in the Bible. It couldbe the location referred to in thevarious Bible accounts. Many people don’t understand why the burial place ofJesus is so important. Thereare cemeteries in countriesall over the world where lovedones and friends are buried. Why is the place where Jesuswas buried any different? The Bible says that Jesusrose from the dead three daysafter he was executed on theCross. This makes his deathdifferent from any other in history. The Bible says that manypeople saw him alive. Eyewitnesses claimed that they sawhim, talked with him, and actually touched him.The Bible makes it very clearthat Jesus’ death on the Cross784 Nogales St.Walnut, CAand his physical resurrection are the foundations of theChristian faith. If Jesus did notrise from the dead, our faith isworthless and we are misleading others. If Jesus did risefrom the dead, then our faith istrue and we have hope for thefuture and purpose in this life, (ICorinthians 15:1-20).Let me encourage you toread it for yourself. Dust offyour Bible and read one of theaccounts of Jesus’ death andresurrection in Matthew, Chapters 27-28; Mark 15-16; Luke23-24; and John 19-20. Eachof them provides the names ofindividuals who claim to haveseen Jesus alive after his deathon the Cross. Each of thesepassages provides specificeyewitness details about Jesusdeath, burial and resurrection.Hope you and your familyhad a blessed Easter Sunday!Pastor Mark Hopper is fromthe Evangelical Free Church ofDiamond Bar, 3255 South Diamond Bar Ave. Sunday servicesare 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Formore information, call (909) 5947604 or visit www.efreedb.org.Anxiety And Our YouthBy Nancy StoopsI have been a psychotherapistfor 15 years, and have workedwith people of all ages with various issues.I’m constantly amazed when Ihave a child or teen brought tome for anxiety issues. We seemto have created a generationthat feels veryinadequateand struggleswith growingup and beingsuccessful.Theissuesthis generation worries about arethings my generation didn’t haveto deal with. Our colleges are impactedand hard to get into. Now kindergarteners have homework andare expected to read and knowmany more things. Video gamesand television are replacing playing outdoors in the fresh air andgetting much needed exercise. This outdoor playing is such agreat way to reduce or eliminatestress. Social Media, unfortunately, has made this generationvery lazy, and childhood obesityand diabetes are on the rise.As parents and communityleaders, we have a social responsibility to help this generation find a healthy balance intheir lives in every area. Weneed to support and encourageour youth. We need to providethe necessary tools to help themstrive to become their best. Weneed to have faith in our youth,as so many of them are diamonds in the rough. We need togive them the guidance and toolsto help them shine and reachtheir full potential. We need to teach teens thatproblems can be worked through, and that drinking and drugs arenot a solution. We need to teachthem how to meditate - not medicate - to quiet their busy minds. We need to teach them how torelax by finding balance, gettingorganized, prioritizing and effec-tively managing their time - andcommunicate what’s workingand what’s not working in theirlives. Please don’t assume theyare all pot-smoking, video gameplaying, lazy, worthless humanbeings. They are just scared, and need some help finding theirway! This article was written by Nancy Stoops M.A., M.F.T. Nancy isa licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
