Humanism andIndividualism Unlike in the Feudal Era when religion was mostimportant during the renaissance, education andphilosophy were very important. Humanism- Tries to balance religion with the powerof the human mind. The study of history, literature,public speaking and art that led to a new way ofthinking in Europe in the late 1300s. Individualism- Is the belief that each person isimportant and has worth/potential.

Where Did The ArtistsLive? Most Renaissance artistslived in the city of Florence,Italy. Many families in port citiesgrew wealthy from trading. The city of Florence wasruled by the Medici family. Medici family grew very richfrom trading and later,banking. They appreciatedart, so they paid artists towork to beautify Florence.

Medici A good artist could receivemoney from families like theMedici to create art. This iscalled a commission. The Medici were called patrons.A patron is a person who givesmoney to an artist. Because ofthe Medici family, artists had incentive (reason) tomove to Florence and create art. As a result, Florencebecame the most important city of the Renaissance.
