At the end of theSpanish Civil War three women, Jimena Menéndez Pidal, ÁngelesGasset and Carmen García del Diestro, former teachers of the InstitutoEscuela who had inherited the pedagogic system advocated by theInstitución Libre de Enseñanza and the Instituto Escuela itself, decidedto found their own school. The institution took the name of ColegioEstudio and opened during the early years of Franco's dictatorship, inJanuary 1940, in a small house on Calle Oquendo. The educationalsystem it pursued was directly opposed to the regime’s system,therefore obliging the staff to overcome numerous obstacles in theirmission to provide an education based on respect for the child and allhuman beings.
