ALR HA - Air cooled water chillersThe newly redesigned McQuay ALR HA (high ambient temperature) air cooled water chillers offer you unsurpassedefficiency, flexibility, reliability, and serviceability in a totalpackage concept. Improved to include the latest heattransfer surface design and the most advanced and efficientreciprocating compressors in the industry, the redesignedALR HA chillers exceed efficiency requirements. TheMcQuay air cooled water chillers are completely factoryassembled, piped, wired and shipped in one piece, readyfor installation. Each unit consists of compressors, insulatedevaporator, condenser coils with independent subcoolercircuits, multiple propeller type direct drive condenser fanswith independent fan motors, heavy-gauge weatherproofcasing and weatherproof electrical control centre containingall necessary and operating controls and motor startingequipment.Highly flexible designThe ALR HA units is available in 26 sizes covering a rangefrom 404 to 1410 kW nominal cooling capacity with coolanttemperature between 10 C and -8 C. Many optional features can be added to fit all installation requirements.Low installation costsThe complete assembly of the units and function testing atthe factory reduces the cost of installation on site. A rigidsteel base distributes the weight of the unit to the supportpoints and allows simple installation by an easy access tothe lifting points. The units are designed with a single pointthree-phase mains connection. All units are suppliedcomplete with refrigerants HCFC 22, HFC 407C or HFC134a.of the base and this facilitates the arrangement of the unit’sbases and the support structures. The electrical and controlequipment is located inside cubicles which can be accessedby key locked doors complete with door interlocking on thepower cabinet.Semi-hermetic compressorsCompressors are reciprocating type 4, 6 or 8 cylinders withsuction and discharge valves of the disc type. The forced lubrication is obtained through a reversible gear type pump. The oil heater is automatically switched on when the compressor stops to prevent oil dilution from liquid refrigerantand in order to keep the right fluidity. The electrical motorsare protected against thermal over load through thermistorsembedded in each of the three phases of the statoricwindings. The ALR HA units, are equipped with McQuay800 and 900 S compressors.EvaporatorThe evaporator is a direct expansion shell-and-tube typewith water flowing in the baffled shell side and refrigerantflowing through the tubes. The ALR HA evaporator are designed in more separate refrigerant circuits, one for eachcompressor. The evaporator is manufactured with a carbonsteel shell and seamless high efficiency copper tubes. Rollexpansion anchors the refrigerant tubes in the heavy carbon steel tube sheet. Water baffles are polypropylene to resist corrosion. Refrigerant head is in carbon steel and is removable to permit access to the tubes. The evaporator iswrapped with closed-cell heat insulation.Condenser coilsThe microprocessor safety and control system allows thetrouble shootingof any type of functional anomaly, enabling simpler, safer and timely intervention by the unitmaintenance personnel. The oil heater in the sump on eachcompressor and a complete set of controls and safetydevices protect the unit from abnormal operating conditions. The new ALR HA units are constructed with internally enhanced seamless copper tubes arranged in a staggered rowpattern and mechanically expanded into McQuay lancedand rippled aluminium condenser fins with full fin collars. An integral subcooling circuit provided sufficient sub coolingto effectively eliminate liquid flashing and increases in cooling capacity up to 8% without increasing in absorbedpower.Code requirementsCondenser coil fansAll units are designed and manufactured in accordance withapplicable selections of the following which are equivalentto American Air-conditioning industry applicable codes:Rating of chillers: UNI 9018Construction of pressure vessel: TÜV Standards (optional)Electrical codes: IEC 204-1 CEI 44-5 Elect. & Safety CodesSafety Codes: CEI-EN 60204-1 CodesManufacturing Quality Stds: ISO 9001The condenser fans are of the helical type with wing-profileblades to achieve a better performance. The direct couplingwith the electrical motor eliminates any problems as regardsthe application of transmission devices and reduces the vibrations caused by the functioning. The motors are suppliedas standard totally enclosed (Insulation class F) and are ofthe three-phase type; they are protected againstoverloading and short circuits by circuit breakers located inside the electrical control panel. The fans operate informed bell shaped orifices.Low maintenance costsFactory testingEach unit is pressure tested, evacuated and charged withthe refrigerant requested. It is then tested at the factory’stest bench under the design conditions specified by thecustomer. Upon request, a second series of tests can becarried out witnessed by the customer (see option 92).Before shipment, each unit is re-checked for pressure andrefrigerant charge control.General characteristicsCabinet and structureThe cabinet is made of galvanized steel sheet and paintedto provide a high resistance to corrosion. The unit baseframe has holes to lift the unit with ropes for an easy installation. The weight is uniformly distributed along the profiles302 B - 98/04 A - page 2/28Electrical control panelThe components of both the power and the control are splitinto two sections of one main panel, accessed by individualkey locked doors to prevent unauthorised entry. The panelis manufactured to insure protection in all weather conditions and the doors are fitted with door-stays to prevent accidental closure. The tables “Standard ALR HA unit performance” allow todetermine the cooling capacity, power absorbed by thecompressor motors with cooled water temperatures between 4 C and 9 C, ambient air temperatures between 25 C and 52 C.2. Although the data can be interpolated, extrapolation is notpermitted. For conditions other than those shown in thetables, contact McQuay Product Group.3. The performance of the ALR HA units refers to 5 C of tof chilled water. The increase or reduction of the flow rate ofchilled water produces a reduction and an increase in thecooling performance which is negligible. To ensure thecorrect functioning of the exchanger, it is advisable tomaintain the water’s t within 3 C 6 C.4. The performance figures are based on Fouling factor of0.044 m2 C/kW. In the event of different values, thecorrection coefficients indicated in Table 2 should be used.5. The performance is influenced by air density. Table 3gives the correction factors for the various altitudes abovesea level.6. The power absorbed values given in the standardperformance tables refer to the compressors only. The302 B - 98/04 A - page 3/28

current absorbed by the fans is given in the electricalcharacteristics table.8. To obtain the flow resistance through the evaporator, usethe diagrams on page 9.the temperature of the compressor motor’s stator due to theinrush current during the start-up. To prevent damage to thecompressors, McQuay has envisaged the application of adevice to limit frequent stops and restarts.During the span of one hour there will be no more than 6starts of the compressor. The plant side should thereforeensure that the overall water content allows a more constantfunctioning of the unit and consequently greaterenvironmental comfort. The minimum installation water content envisaged should be calculated with a certainapproximation using this formula:Example of selection of an ALR HA unitData:Cooling capacity required: 650 kWAmbient air temperature: 46 CTemperature of cooled water: from 12 to 7 CRefrigerant: HCFC22(1) Q P x p25Fouling factor: 0.132 m2 C/kWAltitude above sea level: 900 mwhere:Glycol content: noneQ minimum content of the plant expressed in litres.1. The corrected cooling capacity is650 kW/0.975/0.979 681 kW.4. The cooling unit to satisfy this capacity is ALR HA 230.2ST 022. This unit will have the following operating data:Cooling capacity:684 kW x 0.975 x 0.979 652,9 kWPower absorbed by compressors:243,1 kW x 0.986 x 1.015 243,3 kW.Chilled water flow rate: 652,9 kW/4.186/(12-7) 31,2 l/s.Pressure drop indicated by the diagram on page 9 with acooled water flow of 31,2 l/s on the straight linecorresponding to the unit ALR HA 230.2 we find a pressuredrop of 32 kPa.Q 445000 x 0.25 4450 l25For a more accurate determination of the quantity of water,it is advisable to contact the designer of the plant. When thesum of the water content of the evaporator, the pipes of thehydraulic circuit and the terminals (coils, exchangers, etc.) islower than the value obtained, it would be better to opt for aALR McQuay cooling unit equipped with inertial tank(optional).Table 2 - Fouling factorWater content in cooling circuitsThe cooled water distribution circuits should have aminimum water content to avoid excessive intermittentoperation of the compressors. Installation notesHandlingAll moving and handling may damage the unit if someconditions are not scrupulously observed. The units shouldbe lifted with a crane using long ropes anchored to theholes on the frame of the unit’s base and by using the upperspacer bars (see accessory 80) to prevent the ropes fromdamaging the condenser coils.LocationThe ALR units are produced for outside installation onroofs, floors or below ground level on condition that the areais free from obstacles for the passage of the condensationair. The unit should be positioned on solid foundations andperfectly level; in the case of installation on roofs or floors, itmay be advisable to arrange the use of suitable weightdistribution beams. When the units are installed on theground, a concrete base at least 250 mm wider and longerthan the unit’s footprint should be laid. Furthermore, thisbase should be sufficiently robust to withstand the unitweight mentioned in the technical data table. When theunits are positioned in areas which are easily accessible bypersons or animals, it is advisable to fit guards to protectthe condenser coil guards (see accessory 32) and, whennecessary, also guards to protect the compressor (seeaccessory 33).Space requirementsThe ALR HA units are air-cooled, hence it is important toobserve the minimum distances which guarantee the bestventilation of the condenser coils. Limitations of space re-ducing the air flow could cause significant reductions incooling capacity, an increase in electricity consumption and,in some cases, the unit may stop functioning as a result ofthe high condensation pressure. The fans do not allow theuse of ducts which have high flow resistance, hence isshould be ensured that the output air cannot recycle itselfinside the condenser coils. The units should be positionedsuch that there is sufficient distance between the coils andany obstacles to improve ventilation and also to facilitate inspection. When two or more units are positioned side byside it is recommended that the condenser coils are at least3000 mm distance from one another. Smaller distancescould cause the recirculation of hot air. If the units arepositioned in places surrounded by walls or obstacles of thesame height as the units, the units should be at least 3000mm from said obstacles. For other installation solutions, consult McQuay technicians.Acoustic protectionThe low noise levels of the ALR units means that they meetmost of the most restrictive regulations, thanks to theavailability of two versions with different sound levels: thestandard version (ST), the version with sound proofing cabinet on compressors (CN). When the noise level must meetspecial requirements it will be necessary to pay themaximum attention to ensure the perfect insulation of theunit from the support base by applying appropriate vibrationdampening devices (see accessories 84 and 85), applyingvibration-dampening mounts on the water pipes and on theelectrical connections.NomenclatureALR HA 200.2 ST 022Air cooled water chillerHigh ambient temperatureSize:200TonNo. of compressor 234Version:STCNStandard versionSound proofing cabinets on compressorsRefrigerant:022407134HCFC 22HFC 407CHFC 134a302 B - 98/04 A - page 5/28

cause water-cooled chillers can take advantage of lower condensing temperatures than air-cooled chillers. Air-cooled chillers have a full load kW/ton of approxi-mately 1.25 while water-cooled chillers have a full load kW/ton of between 0.55 and 0.8 kW/ton. The kW draw of the cooling tower fans and con-denser water pump should be

Air Cooled Chiller Air Air 2 Air Air 6 AIR COOLED CHILLERS Air-cooled chillers are refrigeration machines that remove heat from cooling loads using chilled water and reject this heat into the atmosphere using refrigerant. THEY ALL HAVE fans, condenser coils, and compressors. Air-cooled chillers are used to provide cooling for human comfort and electronic equipment as well as industrial process .

Air-cooled chillers are used to produce chilled water to air-side systems such as primary air fan coil systems, constant air volume systems and variable air volume systems in different zones of the building. An air-cooled screw chiller generally comprises a shell and tube evaporator, an air-cooled condenser with

the transactions are difficult to discern. This makes it difficult to determine the overall size of activity and to know what the fair price is for a particular technology. And, of course, in highly inefficient markets a good deal of potentially valuable trade in innovation does not occur. The costs are so high and the potential value so difficult to perceive that innovation often sits “on .
