Special Programs Global STEM Challenges Program– more information on the following slides. Edison Writing Center Student tutors have been trained to offer one-on-one tutorial sessions on writingassignments for any academic class at Edison, outside writing requirements for the IBdiploma, resumes, college application essays, and any other writing project a studentasks for help with. The Writing Center is open during lunches, and after school on late bus days. Students sign up in advance for tutor appointments. Eagle Flight School After-school Peer and Staff mentoring program for targeted students. Supports increasing critical thinking and organizational skills. Focus on Math, Science, and STEM-related career exploration. Edison Math Center Provides peer tutors for assistance in math classes. The Math Center is located in the Cafeteria and is open during all lunches. Students can drop-in or can make appointments in advance.

Each 9th grader has theoption of English 9 orEnglish 9 Honors. The two courses readsome of the sameworks, but theeducational approach isdifferent.

English 9: 20-30 min. pernight of note review,guided reading, vocabpractice, short writingassignments, oroccasional projects. English 9 HN: 30-45 min.per night of independentreading, longer processwriting, and projectsEnglish 9 is more guided, while English 9 Honors requiresmore independence & autonomy.

Social Studies-th9Grade Options Option 1- World I. Studies Pre-Historythrough 1500, the Renaissance. The end ofthis course has a World I SOL. Option 2- Honors World. Studies 1500through modern day. The end of thiscourse has a World II SOL.

Social Studies- Differencesbetween honors and regular Regular World I studies different years thanHonors World. More project based, morefocus on SOL preparation. Honors World has more Document BasedQuestions, essay writing, preparing for theIB track. Generally speaking morehomework than regular World. Moreindependent reading.

Biology All students sign up for Standard Biology During the first quarter students see bothstandard and honors assessments At the end of the first quarter students maychoose to pursue the honors biology credit All biology courses will be a mix of standardand honors students Honors entails more depth, not more workand there is a science project requirement

Double block meets every day for students who need aslower paced course. STEM Math Component – by the end of the three years,students have covered Geometry, Algebra 2, and PreCalculus.

Mathematics 9th graders entering Algebra 1 will be enrolled in:– Double Block Algebra 1– Algebra 1 Double block Algebra 1 meets everyday andprovides students with a solid foundation forfuture math courses Algebra 1 meets every other day. Course Selection Process Twain students will receive a copy of the Course Offerings Guide February27th; Holmes students will receive theirs January 27th. It is also available onEdison’s website: http://www.fcps.edu/EdisonHS under the Student ServicesTab. Edison counselors will be at Twain March 6 to assist their students in selectingtheir courses. Holmes students will meet with their counselors on February9th to complete their course selections. Parents will receive a copy of the registration form. Parents will receive a list of the courses that their student is registered for inmid-March. There will be an opportunity to make any necessary corrections at this time.

Course Selection Process –Private Schools/Transfer students Edison will begin registering students new toFCPS/Edison beginning in March. Please call Krystal Brooks, Registrar 703-924-8022 tomake a registration appointment. Transfer students – please wait until you receiveconfirmation that the transfer has been approved prior tomaking appointment. Students and Parents will meet with the counselor toselect courses for next year.

EHS schedule Students take 7 classes on a rotating schedule.
