90 Years - Strong, Committed andDelicious .By Sally DuncanThe earliest record of theClunes RSL Women’s Auxiliarycan be found in the ClunesGuardian in April 1929. Claimingthis date as the first officiallyrecognized date of existence, ourWomen’s Auxiliary plan tocelebrate 90 years of operation, later this year, following ourexisting commitments to ANZACPhoto suppliedDay and Booktown.90 years of delicious Devonshire teas, catering for golfand bowls days, cakes and slices for street stalls, and helpingwith catering for many, many community and private events. The current Women’s Auxiliary members are typical ofthose who have come before them –following the pledge of“we also serve” they epitomise the generosity and kind spiritof country women across Australia, who for generations havenot only baked famous scones but who have extended thehand of friendship to newcomers. The Auxiliary’s purpose has always been to support theRSL Sub-Branch, the RSL members (usually, but not always, their husbands), and the broader Clunes community.Catering has always been the Auxiliary’s foundationactivity, be it Bowls Day, Golf Day, Book Town or MarketDay (or the many versions of those over the years). Theladies generously donate time, ingredients and love to ensurea plentiful spread is available.Having witnessed their passion and commitment andbeen a recipient for many years of their extended love andfriendship, I can highly recommend joining this group ofMAY 2019ladies who I count as some of my best friends. As thenumber of members diminishes, we find our membershipbolstered by daughters and granddaughters who also wish toserve. Maybe you’d like to join, and help us celebrate thefirst 90 years. My mum joined when she was in her 50’s andserved the RSL for 35 years, working side by side with ladiesin the community who were like minded, caring, and wantingto help others. The Clunes RSL Women’s Auxiliary is aplace where you will find friendship and of course amazingbakers willing to share recipes and teach old and newcooking skills. We’ll keep you informed of the planning for our 90years celebrations !!Clunes Walkability PlanBy Kathie Schnur, Project Office Hepburn Shire CouncilCouncil is developing a Clunes Walkability Plan inpartnership with the Clunes community to identifyopportunities to improve walking, cycling and riding aroundtown over the next 5 to 10 years. Clunes Free Librarythe next step being a structural examination and report toestablish what must be done with the north wing rooms.By Phil TaigThis year the Clunes Free Library will once again open Interested in what is happening at the Clunes Free Library?its doors for Clunes Booktown Festival and will play host to a Come along to the 7pm Thursday 16 May meeting at the Freedazzling list of literati presentations in the renovated Clunes Library, or if you prefer, contact COM Chairman GraemeJohnston on 0427 534 532 or at thedukesbb@bigpond.comFree Library Hall.A Certificate of Excellence!By Paula SitaPhoto suppliedThe full schedule of Booktown presentations includesthe Clunes Free Library as one of the six Clunes venuesoutlined in the printed Booktown Festival Program whichlocal residents are encouraged to peruse before the crush ofthe Booktown weekend. Many of the events are openly free, some free but require a booked ticket, and other, including allat the Free Library, require a pre-paid ticket for entry. It is appropriate that the facial image of the goddess ofWisdom, Minerva, appears on the façade over the FreeLibrary front door, while her Owl appears as a mural in thefront foyer, both of which identify the CFL building as adepository of knowledge and wisdom. The mission of the Clunes Free Library is to return thebuilding to be a place of learning. The Committee ofManagement is halfway to achieving this goal and thosefortunate enough to have a ticket to one of the Booktownpresentations at the Clunes Free Library will be able to viewthe progress to date.Renovation ProgressThe outside of the building is now weatherproof, withrepairs carried out to the roof, new bargeboards and spoutinginstalled, stormwater drains installed and ground levelsgraded to prevent stormwater access under the floor. The Committee of Management had had security screenfitted to cover windows and a security door fitted to cover therear exit door. Motion sensor spotlights have been installed tothe front and rear of the building. On the adjoining reserve, grass has been cut at regularintervals and trees that were dangerously overhangingadjacent properties have been cut down and removed.Following a number of vandal attacks, security camerashave been installed internally and externally which willidentify culprits should there be any further trespassing.Internally, the south wing which includes the frontoffice, main hall and kitchen, have all been painted and thehall was used at last year’s Booktown Festival and will beagain this year, for author presentations. All of these renovations have been made possible byraising funds from a number of sources and by the wonderfulsupport of many Clunes residents who have given generouslyof their time and money. There is still much to be done, withMAY 2019When recently taking a 2hr car drive from Melbourne toMaryborough (north-east of Ballarat), my husband and I weredelighted to travel through some pretty and well-kept littletowns. In particular, we were impressed with a quaint railwaystation at Clunes where we made a short stop. Railwaystations in Melbourne can be cold and uninviting places towait for one’s train to come along but not so at Clunes. It hasa little “gold mine” of hospitality!Upon entering the station building, one is greeted by the“hoot hoot” of an imitation owl placed strategically on anearby table. The large entrance room is lined with bookshelves, filled with all manner of books and magazines. Thereare comfortable chairs and in particular, a huge ‘royal’ chairin the corner, especially for children's’ story telling. Thekindly gentleman in attendance is only too willing to offerguidance if required about train timetables or points ofinterest in the town. The adjacent room contains glasses for water and cupsfor those who wish to partake in a quick cuppa before theirlong journey to either Melbourne or further out into thecountry. The bathroom facilities are spotless. In this day and age where hospitality is hard to find andwe are more likely to be confronted in the big city byunattended railway stations and graffiti, this little gem locatedin a tiny town in mid-Victoria is priceless and should beawarded a Certificate of Excellence. Well done, Clunes!Notes From the PastGuardian & Gazette May 1896“A Lady, in delicate health, wishes to meet a usefulcompanion. She must be domesticated, musical, early riser, amiable,Of good appearance, and have some experience inNursing. Total, abstainer preferred.Comfortable home. No salary.”A few days after the advertiser received a hamper labelled:“This side up. With care. Perishable.” On opening it, shefound a fine tabby cat,With a letter tied to her tail. It ran thus: - “Madam, - Inanswer to your advertisementI am happy to furnish you with a useful Companion, whichyou will find exactlySuited to your requirements. She is domesticated, a goodvocalist, an early riser,Possesses an amiable disposition, and is consideredhandsome; she has had great experience as a nurse, havingbrought up a large family. I need scarcely add that she is atotal abstainer. As salary to her is no object, she Weill serve you faithfully inreturn for a comfortable home.CLUNES COMMUNITY NEWSPAGE 4

Clunes Garden ClubBy Jill TaigWith the promise of a perfect Autumn day a group of 17members set off to visit Mica Grange at Sutton Grange. The property is set on a large acreage, with huge rockyoutcrops, high on the hilltops with views towards Bendigo. We were welcomed by Mary and Bede, who provided adelicious Devonshire tea, served on an expansive deck, where we enjoyed the views and lovely morning sunshine. We were surprised that the garden, particularly the roses, were still blooming profusely, in contrast to our Clunes‘crispy’ offerings. Bede explained they have that one magicalingredient, a natural spring, feeding into a very large dam, which allows constant watering. The property included largeabundant vegetable gardens, and fruit trees, as well as anative garden, and walking paths through the native gardenarea.Mica Grange is also exhibits Art works and gardenstructures, which provide interest. Many of our membersbought decorative garden sculptures and plants after beinginspired by the thriving and artistic displays in the housegarden and surrounds. We then travelled to Barkers Creek, to lunch atSkydancers Nursery. At this time of the year the Butterflyenclosure was less busy, but well tended nursery plants anddisplays offered wide variety. Our last foray was to a new nursery in Castlemaine, TheGreen Folly. Again, inspiring, interesting plants, and staffvery keen to engage and give advice. We all enjoyed theMAY 2019opportunity to soak up the sunshine, explore more planttypes, and share companionship. All in all a great day!” – JillTaigMay sees us at Avalon Nursery, Formosa Nursery Caféand Spot on Pots. COMMUNITY GROUP ROUNDUPTrain your brainVisual-SpatialBy Jordan RozanskiClunes Tutoring GroupSo far this year, the group have been impressed withstudents’ improvement in terms of their literacy andnumeracy skills. The Clunes Tutoring Group are appreciatingthe support of tutors each week during the school terms. OnWednesday afternoons, between 3pm and 5pm, primary andsecondary students can be assisted with academic areas oftheir choice at the Clunes Neighbourhood House, Lunchroomfrom eight dollars per session.“I’ll take him for language classes onWednesdays up at the school. Scary at first, hey Toby?”He nods, uncertain. June draws an arc withher big toe in the red dirt.“Not as scary as nobody speaking language. Not as scary as having no language left tospeak”.Joanna Atherfold Finn, WatermarkClunes Tutoring Group take pride in matching the righttutor with the right child. Gentle coaching supports students’personal and academic growth. The benefits of formalised, supported, study sessions are vast. Not only does this help thebrain to communicate, regular practice develops studentcapacity to focus, be mentally flexible and coordinated.Attention Management is considered at the hour-longsessions. Grant, A, (2019) explains this as: “The idea is thatif the people and projects that matter are prioritised, it won’tmatter how long anything takes. Attention management is theart of focusing on getting things done for the right reasons, inthe right places, and at the right moments”.Another theoretical framework underpinning the ClunesTutoring Group is Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences. HowardGardner says that students learn in ways that are identifiablydistinctive. The broad spectrum of students - and perhaps thesociety as a whole - would be better served if disciplinescould be presented in a number of ways and learning couldbe assessed through a variety of means. The learning stylesare as follows:- think in terms of physical space, as doarchitects and sailors. Very aware of their environments. They like to draw, do jigsaw puzzles, read maps, daydream. They can be taught through drawings, verbal and physicalimagery. Tools include models, graphics, eoconferencing, television, multimedia, texts withpictures/charts/graphs.Bodily-kinesthetic- use the body effectively, like adancer or a surgeon. Keen sense of body awareness. Theylike movement, making things, touching. Theycommunicate well through body language and be taughtthrough physical activity, hands-on learning, acting out, role playing. Tools include equipment and real objects.Musical - show sensitivity to rhythm and sound. Theylove music, but they are also sensitive to sounds in theirenvironments. They may study better with music in thebackground. They can be taught by turning lessons intolyrics, speaking rhythmically, tapping out time. Toolsinclude musical instruments, music, radio, stereo, CDROM, multimedia.Interpersonal - understanding, interacting with others. These students learn through interaction. They have manyfriends, empathy for others, street smarts. They can betaught through group activities, seminars, dialogues. Toolsinclude the telephone, audio conferencing, time andattention from the instructor, video conferencing, writing, computer conferencing, E-mail.Intrapersonal - understanding one's own interests, goals. These learners tend to shy away from others. They'rein tune with their inner feelings; they have wisdom, intuition and motivation, as well as a strong will, confidence and opinions. They can be taught throughindependent study and introspection. Tools include books, creative materials, diaries, privacy and time. They are themost independent of the learners.Linguistic- using words effectively. These learnershave highly developed auditory skills and often think inwords. They like reading, playing word games, making uppoetry or stories. They can be taught by encouraging themto say and see words, read books together. Tools includecomputers, games, multimedia, books, tape recorders, andlecture.Logical -Mathematical- reasoning, calculating.Think conceptually, abstractly and are able to see andexplore patterns and relationships. They like to experiment, solve puzzles, ask cosmic questions. They can be taughtthrough logic games, investigations, mysteries. They needto learn and form concepts before they can deal withdetails.Community Group Roundup continued on page 10Photos suppliedMAY 2019CLUNES COMMUNITY NEWSPAGE 10

Dawson (2005) examined contribution of agricultural exports to growth in developing nations. The first model was based on agricultural production function, including agricultural and non-agricultural exports. The second model included agricultural and non-agricultural where each sector was sub divided into exports and non-export sector.

India’s food and agricultural exports jumped from 16.8 billion in 2009 to 35.06 billion in 2015.
