;About the Certification & ExaminationCertificationCongratulations on your commitment to certification inTrauma Registry. The American Trauma Society’s TraumaRegistry and Data Council (TRDC) endorses the concept ofvoluntary certification by examination for all trauma registryprofessionals. The Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries(CSTR) represents a trauma registry and data expert who hasdemonstrated current competence in a specialized area ofpractice and been credentialed through the American TraumaSociety. Certification in trauma registry is highly valued andprovides national and formal recognition of advanced traumaregistry knowledge.The Certification program was designed to promote thedelivery of safe and effective care and the highest quality ofdata analysis. It establishes and measures a requisite ofknowledge required for expertise in building, managing andenhancing trauma registry practice. The Certificationencourages continued personal and professional growth inthe practice of trauma registry.The certification is awarded to candidates who pass the exam.Recertification is required every 4 years by continuingeducation or re-examination to give evidence of continuingcompetency and knowledge. The CSTR must have currentstatus in order to use the credential.These fees include a non-refundable administrative fee of 50.00. ATS membership must be current to be eligible for thereduced fee.Application ProcedurePlease read through this handbook to understand all therequirements for initial and recertification of the CSTR. ;Examination AdministrationThe CSTR examination is administered by TesTrac. TesTraccollaborates with PSI Exams Online to offer computer-basedtesting centers located throughout the United States.Scheduling Your ExaminationAppointmentUpon approval by the ATS and receipt of initial email from theATS, PSI Exams Online (TesTrac) will send an email to the CSTRExam Candidate within 5 additional business days withscheduling instructions. All exams must be scheduled throughPSI Exams Online (TesTrac). All emails will be sent to the emailaddress provided on the application.Special NeedsThe purpose of accommodations is to provide candidates withfull access to the CSTR exam. However, accommodations arenot a guarantee of improved performance or test completion.ATS and TesTrac provide reasonable and appropriateaccommodations to individuals with documented disabilitieswho demonstrate a need for accommodations. Testaccommodations may include things such as: (1) a separatetesting room, (2) extra testing time, or (3) extra breaks.Test accommodations are individualized and considered on acase-by-case basis. Consequently, no single type ofaccommodation (e.g. extra time) would necessarily beappropriate for all individuals with disabilities. Simplydemonstrating that an individual meets diagnostic criteria fora particular disorder does not mean that the person isautomatically entitled to accommodations.Disabled persons and/or who require special provisions onexam day must submit a Request for Special Accommodationsform (available at www.amtrauma.org) with the application,candidate fee, and written documentation of the following:1.2.3.4.5.A formal diagnosis by a skilled evaluator (e.g., apsychologist)The credentials and documentation of the expertise ofthe evaluator providing documentation referencedimmediately aboveSpecific findings in support of the diagnosisCurrent functional limitationsExplanation of the specific requests for specialaccommodationspostpone requests which are not submitted as specified aboveor which, in the judgment of the ATS, would jeopardize thesecurity of the exam material or the integrity of scores derivedfrom the exam.Written notification will be provided to the candidate by emaildetailing the accommodations and any procedures that mustbe followed to ensure the test center can accommodate thestated needs on the test date.Rules for the Examination1.2.3.4.No electronic devices (including cellular phones, pagers,Bluetooth devices, smart watches, cameras, voicerecording devices, MP3 players, laptop computers, andtablets) may be brought into the testing area or usedduring the examination.No books, papers or reference materials may be takeninto the examination room or removed from theexamination room.No questions concerning content of the examination maybe asked during the examination session. The candidateshould read the directions that are provided on screen atthe beginning of the examination session carefully.Candidates are prohibited from leaving the testing roomwhile their examination is in session, with the soleexception of going to the restroom.Report of ResultsCandidates will be notified immediately of the score of theexam. Successful candidates will receive certificationcredentials from the American Trauma Society by mail within4 weeks of the testing date.Re-ExaminationThe Certification Examination may be taken up to 3 times peryear. A new application and fee must be completed for eachattempt. It is recommended that candidates wait at least 1month between testing attempts, to allow for studying,application process and test scheduling.While the ATS will make every effort to fulfill specialaccommodation requests, it reserves the right to deny or4

;Preparing for the ExaminationResponsive PracticeQuestionsATS Trauma Registry Course(Live or Online)The American Trauma Society offers prospective CSTRcandidates the option of taking the Responsive PracticeQuestions (RPQs) prior to taking the certification exam.The TRC provides a more standardized understanding ofthe specialty and approach to the task of maintaining atrauma registry for trauma registry professionals. Lecturesare designed to build upon experience, program maturity,and institutional needs. In this manner the TRC is designedand appropriate for trauma registry and data professionalsof all levels of experience. The TRC provides the studentwith national standard definitions and methodologiesessential to a comprehensive trauma registry. The TRC hasbeen recognized by the American College of Surgeons inthe Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient since1999 as an avenue for comprehensive trauma registrytraining.The RPQs provide an experience to review examples of thetypes of questions and content areas included in the CSTRExamination. The RPQs provide an opportunity to learnmore about the question format, style, and level ofdifficulty.The RPQs consists of over 140questionswhichinclude but are not limited to multiple choice, fill in theblank, true or false, and matching. The RPQs have a 30 daystart to completion timeframe. Content includes questionswithin the following areas:1.2.3.4.Data ManagementConditions of injuryCoding and Scoring ConceptsRegistry IssuesAfter completing the RPQs, you will receive an instant scorereport showing performance in each of the content areas.In addition, if any question is answered incorrectly, anautomatic response will be provided which will include thecorrect answer and an explanation for the answer.NOTE: Performance on the CSTR RPQs may differ fromactual performance on the Certification Examination. Thus,there is no guarantee that taking RPQs will help you passthe Certification Examination. ;Maintaining Your CertificationAttainment of CertificationEligible candidates who pass the Certification Examinationfor Trauma Registrars are eligible to use the registereddesignation CSTR after their names and will receivecertificates from the ATS. A registry of Certified Specialistsin Trauma Registry will be maintained by the ATS and maybe reported in its publications.application evaluation within four weeks of applicationsubmission. If criteria are deemed fulfilled, a new four-yearcertificate effective the renewal date will be issued to theCSTR.Certification is recognized for a period of four years atwhich time the candidate must meet continuing educationrequirements (see below) or retake and pass the currentCertification Examination for Trauma Registrars.Recertification Process/PoliciesRecertificationTo apply for recertification through continuing education,32 contact hours of continuing education (CE) related toTrauma Registry practice must be submitted forconsideration. A minimum of 32 contact hours must be inthe areas of (I) Data Management, (II) Conditions ofInjuries, (III) Coding and Scoring Concepts, and (IV) RegistryIssues. All CEs must have been completed during the fouryears prior to the candidate’s certification renewal datewith a minimum of eight CEs completed during the 12months prior to recertification. These CEs may beaccumulated in any combination of the following:1.2.Continuing Education Programs: These may includeworkshops, seminars, professional developmentofferings, home-study courses, and state or nationalconferences. The CE provider/sponsor must beidentified sufficiently to allow a reviewer to recognizethe organization. Use state abbreviations, names oforganization, names of hospital or college, etc. Theapplicant may be requested to show proof of numberof hours for each CE completed.Academic Courses: Each individual academic creditwill be considered as ten CE hours. Courses may beundergraduate or graduate level and a transcript ofsuccessful completion may be requested.All program information must be listed on the Applicationof Recertification of Certified Specialist in TraumaRegistries (CSTR) through Continuing Education and mustinclude date, program title, provider or sponsor, andnumber of CEs awarded. Candidates must includedocumentation of all CEs awarded (These include, coursecertificates of completion, course syllabus, transcript orother certifying document). ;Renewal NoticesATS sends CSTR renewal reminders by email. It is importantto keep your current contact information in your ATSprofile at all times. Because delivery of renewal noticescan't be guaranteed, it is the candidate’s responsibility toapply for renewal of certification before the applicationdeadline date. If you have unsubscribed from bulk emailsor use a workplace email address you may not receiveemail messages as intended. Please use a personal emailaddress, or request your employer not block ATS emails.Also, be sure to check your spam or junk mail foldersregularly for communications from ATS.Revocation .Cheating on the certification examination.Misrepresentation of certification status.Failure to meet certification or recertification criteria.Failure to supply requested material by deadline.Failure to pay any appropriate and required fees.No fees will be refunded if recertification is denied. If CSTRrecertification is denied, depending on reason for denial,an applicant may appeal the decision. The ATS TraumaRegistry and Data Council provides the appeal mechanismfor challenging revocation of board certification. It is theresponsibility of the individual to initiate this process.An appeal must be submitted in writing to the ATS TRDCwithin 30 days of recertification denial notification. Theappeal shall state specific reasons why the candidate isentitled to recertification. The ATS will review the appealand issue a decision within 30 days of submission.The occurrence of any of the following actions will result inthe denial, suspension or revocation of the Certification bythe ATS:1.
