INTRODUCTIONThis brief but comprehensive book is presented toyou to outline the rituals of Umrah. It is only through theInfinite Mercy of Allah ta‘aalaa that I have been able tocontribute this humble work for the cause of Islaam. It was in 1987, when I was recovering from mychronic illness, that my brother, (Maulana) Haafiz Ismail, directed my attention towards the need for a short andcomprehensive book on Umrah in English. He repeatedlyreminded me of his desire and insisted that I proceedwith it. Inspite of my weakness, both spiritual andphysical, I also had the great desire to do so, thus I firmlyresolved and commenced the work in the name of Allahta‘aalaa. This book contains all the necessary informationregarding the method, rites and formalities of Umrah, with diagrams and sketches where appropriate.Inshaa’allah, you will find in it answers to many of yourquestions.May Allah ta‘aalaa through His Mercy and Kindnesspardon me for any errors herein, and abundantly rewardall for their effort in making this publication possible.I earnestly request the readers to remember me, myteachers, family and friends and all those who havecontributed in the publication of this book in their du‘aa.Muhammad Saleem DhoratLeicester, EnglandiiRajab 1407/March 1987

How to Perform Umrah1.2.3.IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONSIt must be stressed at the very outset that thereshould be a sincere intention to perform Umrah, for all actions are judged by intentions. The holyProphet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said:“The reward of deeds depends on the intentions”.BukhaariThe intention must be to please Allah ta‘aalaaexclusively, hopeful of earning rewards only fromAllah ta‘aalaa, the Creator, believing in what hasbeen promised by Allah ta‘aalaa through ourbeloved Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam andperforming the act according to the way shownby him. Hence, this must always be borne in ourminds.Do not let the thought enter your mind that youare going on a trip or a holiday. No! You are goingto fulfil one of the greatest Sunnah of the holyProphet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. You are goingto Makkah where our beloved Prophet sallallahualayhi wasallam was born and to Madeenah wherehe is resting. You are going to visit the house ofAllah ta‘aalaa – Ka‘bah, which is surrounded byangels on all sides, and upon which continuouslydescend the Mercy and Blessings of Allah ta‘aalaa. As regards to your visit to the holy places, it mustbe borne in mind that Allah ta‘aalaa does not grant1Important Instructions

How to Perform UmrahIN MAKKAH MUKARRAMAHAfter putting on ihraam, you should engage yourselfin the remembrance of Allah ta‘aalaa, istighfaar and recitethe talbiyah as much as possible until you reach Makkah.1.Enter the sacred city of Makkah with utmost respectand humility reciting talbiyah.2.Make your arrangements and immediately go tothe sacred Masjid which is known as Al MasjidulHaraam. You must enter the Masjid with utmosthumility and a sense of the Greatness of Allahta‘aalaa and sacredness of the place.3.When entering the Masjid, put your right foot inthe Masjid and say:bismillaahi wassalaatu wassalaamu alaarasoolillaah. Allaahummaftah lee abwaabarahmatik“In the name of Allah. May the Peace andSalutations (of Allah) be upon the Messengerof Allah. O Allah, open for me the doors of YourMercies”.9In Makkah Mukarramah

How to Perform Umrah4.When you see Ka‘bah, say three times:allaahu akbar. Laa ilaaha illallaah“Allah is the greatest. There is no deity exceptAllah”.Thereafter, read durood shareef and make du‘aawhile standing, facing Ka‘bah.NOTE: This moment is very precious, for whateverdu‘aa is made is most certainly accepted by Allah. Makedu‘aa as much as you can. One must not forget to makethis du‘aa:“O Allah, when you take me away from this world, take me in the state of Imaan. O Allah, enter me intoJannah without any account. O Allah, accept all my du‘aaand keep me steadfast on Deen”.Do remember this humble writer in your du‘aa also.Mas’alah: A woman in the state of haydh (menstruation)or nifaas (period after childbirth) must not enter theMasjid.10In Makkah Mukarramah

How to Perform UmrahTAWAAFNow you must perform tawaaf which is fardh inUmrah. During tawaaf, engage yourself in du‘aa andremembrance of Allah ta‘aalaa. The recital of the holyQur’aan is also permissible. Be mindful that you do notraise your voice as this will cause disturbance to othersperforming tawaaf.1.Proceed towards the corner of the Ka‘bah in whichlies Al Hajarul Aswad.2.Looking from the Ka‘bah around the arched wallsof Al Masjidul Haraam, you will see a green lightdirectly opposite one of the four corners of Ka‘bah. In this corner (of Ka‘bah) lies Al Hajarul Aswad.Another clue for locating Al Hajarul Aswad is thatat present it is located in the corner of Ka‘bah facingthe corner with only one minaret; (the rest of thethree corners have two minarets each).3.On (or prior to) reaching this corner, make idhtibaaand stand facing the Ka‘bah, such that the wholeof Al Hajarul Aswad lies to the right of your rightshoulder. (The floor is marked with a black/brownline which stretches from Al Hajarul Aswad).4.Stop reciting talbiyah and make niyyah (which isfardh) to perform tawaaf.5.Move slightly to your right, keeping the face andchest towards Ka‘bah, and stand on the black linewhich indicates that you are directly in line withAl Hajarul Aswad.11Tawaaf

If kissing is not possible, then merely touch it with one hand or both handsor raise your hands (palms facing Al HajarulAswad) saying:bismillaahi allaahu akbar“In the Name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest”.and kiss them. This is known as istilaam. It shouldbe performed at the end of every round standingon the black/brown line facing Al Hajarul Aswad. Now move towards the right, keeping the Ka‘bahon your left and walk around Ka‘bah (anticlockwise) until you return to Al Hajarul Aswad. Here, perform istilaam. You have now completedone round. You must complete seven rounds inthis manner to complete the tawaaf. On completing the seventh round, perform istilaamand go to Maqaami Ibraaheem and offer two raka‘atwaajib. It is Sunnah to recite ‘Qul yaa ayyuhalkaafiroon’ in the first raka‘at and ‘Qul huwallaahuTawaaf

How to Perform Umrahahad’ in the second raka‘at. Thereafter engageyourself in du‘aa.NOTE:If you cannot find a place at MaqaamiIbraaheem, it is sufficient to perform the two raka‘atanywhere within the sacred Masjid.10. You should now proceed to the well of Zamzamand facing the direction of Ka‘bah, drink its wateras much as you are able to. Also pour it over thebody.11. Returning from Zamzam, go to Multazam and clingto the wall of Ka‘bah, with arms stretched abovethe head placing on it your right cheek and at timesthe left and engage in du‘aa, for whatever you askis certainly granted by Allah ta‘aalaa.NOTE:If you wish, you can go to Multazam priorto going to the well of Zamzam.12. Return to Al Hajarul Aswad once again andperform istilaam. This istilaam before sa‘ee ismustahab.Mas’alah: The kissing of Al Hajarul Aswad is a Sunnah, while safeguarding the dignity of Muslims is fardh. Afardh cannot be sacrificed for a Sunnah, because Allahta‘aalaa does not accept a Sunnah which violates a fardh. Some pilgrims ignore this fact when they harm othersin their zeal to kiss Al Hajarul Aswad, which is merelya Sunnah. To harm any believer in performing thisSunnah is haraam (prohibited). How is it possible to carryout a Sunnah observance while performing a haraamTawaaf15

How to Perform Umrahdeed? Therefore, when the area is crowded it is sufficientto raise the hands saying ‘Bismillaahi allaahu akbar’and to continue to move into the flow of the people.Inshaa’allah, Allah will grant you His Mercy and willincrease your reward.Mas’alah: There are no prescribed du‘aa for tawaaf. Discontinue the idhtibaa after completingthe seven rounds of tawaaf.Mas’alah:During tawaaf when you come to Al RuknulYamaani, merely touch it with both hands or the righthand. It is not Sunnah to kiss or raise hands at this corner.Mas’alah: Between Al Ruknul Yamaani and Al HajarulAswad it is Sunnah to recite:16Rabbanaa aatinaa fid dunyaa hasanatawwafil aakhirati hasanataw waqinaa ‘azaabannaar“O Allah, grant us goodness in this world, andgoodness in the hereafter, and save us from thepunishment of the fire”.Tawwaf

How to Perform UmrahMas’alah: The Ka‘bah should at all times be on one’sleft side during the tawaaf. Do not keep your back, chestor right arm towards the Ka‘bah.Ibne ‘Umar radhiyallahu anhu relates that heheard Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallamsay, “The touching (of Al Hajarul Aswad)removes sins and whoever performs the tawaafproperly (according to rule) the reward (is like)that of the freeing of a slave and one does notplace one’s foot on the ground nor raises it (intawaaf) except that Allah removes a sin (fromhis deeds) and orders for him one good deed.”TirmiziJaabir radhiyallahu anhu relates fromRasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam that,“The water of Zamzam is for that (intention) forwhich it is drunk (i.e., whatever intention onemakes while drinking the water, one will achievethat intention, e.g. for thirst, food, medicine, etc.)”Ibne Maajah17Tawaaf

How to Perform Umrah1.2.3.4.5.6.18Sa‘eeSA‘EEAfter the istilaam proceed to Safaa - again in thedirection of the green light on the wall.Climb Safaa until you reach the place from whereKa‘bah is visible between the pillars of Al MasjidulHaraam and make niyyah for sa‘ee.Facing Ka‘bah, raise both hands up to the shouldersin the way in which hands are raised while makingdu‘aa. Then say three times:allaahu akbar laa ilaaha illallaah“Allah is the Greatest, there is no deity exceptAllah”.Read durood shareef and make du‘aa for thefulfilment of your good wishes and others’ also.Remain engaged in du‘aa for quite a long time, forthis is a place where du‘aa is accepted. You must now walk (at normal pace) towardsMarwah (the other side). While walking betweenSafaa and Marwah you should engage yourself inremembrance of Allah ta‘aalaa and making du‘aa.When you reach the green lights, you must quickenyour pace and run slowly until you reach the otherset of green lights. Thereafter, you should resumethe normal speed of walking till you reach Marwah.Women, however, must walk at their normal pacebetween the green lights too.

How to Perform Umrah7.On Marwah too, you should go upto such a placefrom where the Ka‘bah is visible. The same actionsmust be performed as on Safaa. This is one round.NOTE:Ka‘bah is not visible from Marwah, therefore climb Marwah and estimate the direction ofKa‘bah.8.From Marwah proceed towards Safaa in the samemanner as described above. On reaching Safaa youhave completed the second round.9.Complete seven rounds in this manner. The finalround will end at Marwah.10. At this stage it is mustahab to perform two raka‘at inAl Masjidul Haraam.Mas’alah: During sa‘ee you are not restricted to anyspecific du‘aa. You may make any du‘aa you wish. However, it is Sunnah to recite:rabbighfir warham antal a‘azzul akram.“O my Lord, forgive and have mercy. How to Perform UmrahHALAQAfter completing the sa‘ee, you must shave your heador trim the hair of the entire head in such a manner thatyou trim at least one inch of each hair. Shaving the headis more virtuous. The women should trim slightly more than one inchfrom the end of their plait. After shaving or trimming the hair, the rituals ofUmrah have ended and all restrictions imposed due tothe ihraam will be lifted.May Allah ta‘aalaa accept your Umrah and bestowyou with its blessings.Yahyaa Ibne Husayn reported on the authorityof his grandfather that Rasoolullah sallallahualayhi wasallam on the occasion of the FarewellHajj made du‘aa thrice for those who shave theirheads and once only for those who trim their hair.Muslim20Halaq

How to Perform UmrahWHILE IN MAKKAH MUKARRAMAH1.You should remain busy in Salaat, du‘aa andrecitation of the holy Qur’aan. You should completethe recitation of the holy Qur’aan at least once.2.Perform each and every fardh Salaat withcongregation in Al Masjidul Haraam. One suchSalaat is equal to two million and five hundredthousand Salaat performed elsewhere.3.Perform virtuous deeds as much as you can becauseevery virtuous act in Makkah is equivalent to onehundred thousand virtuous acts. The holy Prophetsallallahu alayhi wasallam said,“Besides Makkah there is no city on the surface ofthe earth where Allah multiplies one virtue by ahundred thousand times”.4.You should avoid all prohibited and execrable actsand things. Hadhrat ‘Umar and Hadhrat IbneAbbaas radhiyallahu anhum said,“I would much rather prefer to commit seventysins at Rukyah than to commit one sin in Makkah”.NOTE: Rukyah is a place outside Makkah.5.Perform as many tawaaf as possible because a nafltawaaf is superior to a nafl Salaat.NOTE: The offering of two raka‘at at MaqaamiIbraaheem is essential even after nafl tawaaf.6.Perform Salaat in the Hateem whenever you havethe chance. While in Makkah Mukarramah21

The observances of hajj are based on the Holy Qur’an (2:196-203,
